The Abyss, as well as True Lies, had a previous HD remaster done by Lowry, which was really good.

It was never released on disc, but was used on streaming platforms as well as cable broadcasts.

It's just a bummer that we never got the Special Edition remastered by Lowry.

Yeah. Those specific restorations never made it to disc which is a shame. I’d probably take those restorations on standard blu-ray over these new 4K modernizations/revisionisms (i am now hesitant to call them restorations).

A majority of 4k streaming is 15 Mbps, but it has nothing to do with disc encoding. Compression for streaming is handled differently, there's never a 1:1 correlation.

They're remasters anyway, not restorations.

It has on Amazon and is a bonus feature in HDX on the Vudu copy of Abyss.

The spanish bootleg BD used the D-VHS master released exactly 20 years ago

Right, I just mean in general. The Amazon one is currently SDR I believe, and the Vudu isn’t 4K, so I’m just hoping there’s a reason for the odd rollout. I was assured that the QC team would be investigating, so I’m hopeful that they’ll actually make good on that and fix the audio issues. Probably won’t happen, but you never know.

It sounds like the left speaker in your movie theater was off or low. All of these sounds are present on the HD/SE 5.1 mix and all are on the left.

On Vudu, 4K only for the Theatrical Release, standard HD for the Special Edition?

Boooooooo....

Well, if it's the same for the disc in March, to quote Prince Humperdink, I shall be quite put out.

From everything I've read and heard, both cuts will be 4K on disc and branched.

Not mention, I can't believe they'd throw the SE on the disc in 1080p only after it just got a theatrical screening. What I saw on the 6th was certainly not only 1080p.

This will be my first time ever watching The Abyss. Never caught it on TV or vhs and was waiting for a blu-ray version. Promised myself I wouldnt watch it on DVD and would wait. Maybe Im lucky that I dont know how it "should" look. And hopefully it lives up to the hype.

It's pretty excellent. I would watch the SE first because the last 10 minutes of the TC makes the movie fall flat.

I'm waiting for it to be avaiable on itunes. The SE edition. Dont mind a longer runtime if its an engaging film. I personally prefer Aliens TC though as It feels better paced for an action film. But this not being an action film I shouldnt

Yeah i know. Its and old High-def master (1080p?) but so far it looks better than the 4K streaming caps, imo anyway. Similar to the T2 master on the older blu ray vs the 4K disc. I believe that master is from around 2006 (and reused for the 2015 blu ray with better compression).

It would be cool to see the SE version first.
The TC is also good, but I agree that the last ten minutes feels kinda rushed and disjointed, especially after seeing the SE. Even before the SE came out, I felt the conclusion was kinda deus ex machina-ish, but it managed to pull itself together just enough to not upset my love of the movie.

Of all of James Cameron's films, The Abyss SE is the only extended version I prefer over the original theatrical cut.
