Hang on and I'll post an audio clip.

EDIT: Here is the music error (listen to the very end of the music, the note changes right at the end - this error was introduced via the branching DVD - it was a fade from the SE music used for this sequence back into the TC music, which was different - this mistake has now been fixed and the note does not suddenly change at the end anymore): https://voca.ro/1mCZ8KaBhY7Z

Listen to that. That's the error, followed immediately by the new fix. This is how it originally sounded on LD and this is the first time it's been right since!

Someone said in the Aliens thread that the SE has been tealed more than the theatrical. Has the SE of Abyss been tealed even more than the already blanketed theatrical?

I think part of the problem is that people view UHD as the ultimate archive format for historical preservation purposes. It CAN be that, but it's not really the point of the format. We're already dealing with some revisionism in these movies inherently-- nobody watched 4K resolution scans of film negatives when these films were released. And certainly not with HDR grading, and on ultra-sharp OLED displays, etc.

Having said that, sometimes directors involved with their own work on new formats can be a double-edged sword. Sometimes it would be better to have maybe the cinematographer along as the voice of reason (see "The French Connection") but that doesn't always work out 100% either. I just don't think filmmakers look at their work the same way fans or "preservationists" do, and you can either go with it or scream at the clouds when they revise their work. To be honest, usually film revisionism doesn't bother me that much, but that's maybe because almost all of it pales in comparison to what happened to Star Wars over the years.

Cameron has completely ruined these movies. If he just did to them like the T1 and Aliens BDs then that would be annoying but what he has done here is an abomination and no amount of fan preservation can remove all the AI mess from these movies this is nothing short of pure vandalism.

I disagree, but your opinion has certainly been stated clearly and repeatedly.

I am actually OK with boutique labels doing everything disc wise going forward. They are more likely to do a better job at audio and video restorations/quality than the actual studios. Sure there a few that end up needing replacement programs but in the end I would take having to do wait for a corrected disc than take the shit like James Cameron is giving us.

There is absolutely no reason for Goulies II, Citizen Toxie and The Prophecy 3 being better on disc than Aliens, The Abyss, True Lies and Titanic.

Looks like we're going to need an entire case of Chill Pills before this thread is locked.

Probably because deep down we all know it'll be the last physical format.

Going forward it'll be entirely streamed digital, and I'm sure in 10-20 years they'll take another stab at it with the latest AI tools and tech. Some of us may not be here for that though.

I've just thought that surely some sort of manipulation is maybe gonna come into play as time goes on, or adding some kind of noveltys to the way films are mastered or shown, because what's left to do. What's technology gonna be doing going forward. Surely it can't just be a case of in 30 years time that it will just simply be 'Ultra Magnificent 20K'. Just kinda makes me think what's the point. It would of become boring and pointless or sounding abit redundant to need to have films in 20K. So surely they've gotta do something different to change things up.

Not to mention, the teal in this new version is actually taken down a few notches from that HDTV broadcast. Some scenes are indeed teal (and SHOULD be teal), but other scenes and environments are not. It’s in no way a blanket job.

Also going back to True Lies, I noticed some very blue screenshots (not teal!) and look damn near identical to the 35mm scan I saw

Sorry but I find your comment misleading. MOST of the movie is teal in this 4k master it is not just some scenes. There has been a blanket teal tint added and only a small number of scenes dont have teal just like the 4k trailer shows. There should be NO teal in a movie from 1989 and teal is only something Cameron started using since his revisionist Aliens BD. It should be blue not teal same with T2 and all the rest.

The shot of the helicopter in front of the wave looks so awful. The people in it aren't even masked properly, they look like cutouts.
