I sort of feel the same re: the other two films. I hate that all of these releases, as long as we've been waiting for them, aren't absolute home runs. But as someone else said earlier, if I had to pick one of them to be the best of the bunch, it's The Abyss...and that's (thank goodness) what we got.

There was a shot or two of Lindsey at the end that in my showing seemed as though much of the color in her face had been graded to look like she was still recovering from drowning. Extremely pale and white with a hint blue lips.

Maybe it was just how my eyes were seeing those shots in context of the overall grade in the theater.

This is likely the shot I am thinking of and it just read cooler to me for whatever reason at that point.

"extraordinary clarity and detail, so much so that it’s actually a little jarring. The film looks almost modern now as opposed to vintage late 80s, which is obviously Cameron’s intent."

"it occasionally looks a little bit processed... however, the more I look at this image, the more I appreciate it, and I suspect that most fans will feel the same."

"the clarity increase is so dramatic that it does take a little bit of getting used to."
Or ironically maybe it's not him that's reinterpreting his own words to cover up meaning something different.

It's actually just you reinterpreting his words to match your own opinion.

Watched this for the 1st time ever last night and 2 things:

1. The filmed looked beautiful for todays digital standards but it doesnt look like film. Since I never saw it before i got used to it and just enjoyed how good it looked and how good the movie was.

2. Holy sh*t that cpr scene was one of the most intense scenes and a Tour de force acting bit by Ed Harris. It doesnt get talked about enough.

Nowadays people talk about Cameron's technical innovations and his seemingly superhuman ability to make 2 billion dollars with every movie he directs, but IMO his greatest skill is his ability to build and maintain tension. The CPR scene is classic Cameron, masterfully keeping you on the edge of your seat for the fate of a fictional character.

I cant imagine how audiences reacted in theaters during this scene. I also think Camerons strength as a writer is he gets you to care for the characters and everytime you watch his films its like youre hanging out with old friends. Ppl now nitpick his writing ability but I always disagree

I think that both Aliens and The Abyss are his best written screenplays.

while I do like avatar.. nothing has come close to the cpr scene from the abyss.

titanic lack that kind of scene. The love story in terminator was a better one.

I also love that little bit of finality implied by the slight bit of score about halfway through that sequence. It really sells you on her being gone.

It's a disgrace that Ed Harris wasn't nominated for Best Actor for his performance.

Say what you will about the rest of the movie, but Ed's performance was absolutely phenomenal, and is one of the main reasons why this film is still so beloved.

I haven't seen the film in over 20 years and I can play this scene in my head like I saw it yesterday.

Agreed. Whilst he’d never had won (the winner that year was a home run), he clearly deserved a nomination. Obviously acting in a sci-fi movie doesn’t hold a candle to other genres.

Then he doesn't.
So we all think "S**t, so the director is bold, he doesn't save her. He can't anyway, she drowned. We remember Kyle Reese died. Bold move, Jim. Good. Consistency".
Then the actors around Ed go "it's over man!" and we all sink it in agreement. She's dead. She won't be back. He did a Kyle Reese on us.
Then Harris goes "Noooo!!!" and keep going and everyone in the audience is like "Come on man, it's over!". But he won't stop. Why is the scene keep going? He keeps at it and at her, zapping her, scream at her and she's still dead. We all think OK, nice acting, poor guy lost his lover. So Jim makes us feel his loss. But she won't be back. Right?
Then he keeps going, curse at her, slaps her, and she comes back.
And we were all like WTF?
That bloody JC, the same one who now kills his films with DNR and AI enhancement, took us on an emotional rollercoaster.
The whole audience erupted in applause.
This is something no Marvel or DC crap will ever reach.
This is headmaster filmmaking.
James Cameron's best directed scene doesn't have any visual effects.

I have to agree. Ed Harris has always been an actor that classy's up a film no matter how big or small the role. Take his role in A History of Violence, neither big nor flashy but boy was he memorable. His CPR performance blew me away.

So whats the verdict on the new 4K remasterings so far?

Titanic, Aliens, Abyss, True Lies.

True Lies I see is a smeary mess. Seems from what I have seen here is that this one is not so bad. Not ideal but not gross. Oddly I havent even looked at the Aliens thread to see anything really.

Titanic is DNR'd and definitely could be better but I can live with it. Looks like Aliens is in the same boat (no pun intended)...then there's The Abysmal

I thought The Abyss was the better one?

Are all four AI “enhanced”? Hopefully get some comparisons up for Titanic to check for visual oddities ?
