I don't like "Titanic" because I found the characters to be so cliche-ridden, unrealistic, and pretentious that it nearly threw me into a coma. I fell asleep in "Transformers" even though I wasn't tired. In the theater! I think it happened because it was so bad, so insipid to me, that my brain literally made me fall asleep so I didn't have to endure the experience. This happened to me twice during TITANIC as well, and my buddy nudged me awake after a minute or two lol

It's fine that others found a connection to Jack, Rose, the hilariously "evil" one-dimensional Billy Zane, and so on... but I almost walked out of the theater I was so annoyed with these people, and how Cameron was writing a story of the lowest common denominator. The simplest form of character conflict, love triangles, false wistfulness of "poor is freedom, and rich is prison" themes that have no sense of organic truthfulness. It all felt so forced and cheesy.

There was none of the cohesion and unity that came from interaction with Colonial Marines in ALIENS, and how well Ripley deals with these personalities,etc... I never felt the passionate paranoia of parenting and the impending doom of humankind that permeated through Sarah Connor in T2. I loved Sarah's innocent naivete in TERMINATOR, and the slow-burn realization that Hicks (sorry, I mean Reese) isn't crazy, learning to slowly accept him and find strength through him to become a survivor by the end.
And in THE ABYSS, I am blown away by how deep (like an abyss) and powerful the bond that Bud had with Lindsey. Yeah, she ticks him off and pushes all his emotional buttons in ways that only a truly familiar partner (or family member) can do, but... damn if I didn't feel that love and hope for the best when push came to shove.
Hell, even TRUE LIES won me over with Jamie Lee Curtis' fantastic portrayal of a slightly clumsy but lovely spouse, and Hudson's performance and, well... it's just a damned fine action adventure that hits the right emotional beats and knows how to get me to fall for these people, especially during the "interrogation" scene.
I won't even begin to discuss my thesis on PIRANHA II, and how Cameron created one of the most in-depth underwater fish dramas, with myriad personalities between each piranha as they defended their home turf.

In TITANIC, I hated Jack and Rose, and couldn't wait to see them die, but was constantly upset that Rose obviously lived because she was an annoying old lady telling this dumb story in flashback.
When the ship started sinking, I was glad I stayed because at least I could watch some excellent ship sinking action. Also, the set design and costumes for that movie are so damned good, it deserved the Oscars and high praise.

So when people say "Oh they don't like it because it's a James Cameron doing a drama, with less spectacle until the end," or they say "This person doesn't like it because it's 'hip' to dislike it now," well.. maybe, just maybe it is incorrect to assume someone's feelings and reasoning for something, especially if it is based on a simple one-sentence comment about disliking that movie, with no explanation.
I think it's unfair to negate that person's opinion of something simply because you disagree with it. *shrug*

Piranha II was so heartfelt and deeply touching. So few quasi-horror/sci fi/monster fish-dramas out there that really let you know how the critters are feeling inside, and the social and emotional challenges they face. I cried tears of joy and sweet sorrow the whole way through, especially when they finally overcame their personal challenges and arrived triumphantly on land. That said, 4k me, please!!!!! Piranha II ftw.

So we don't have anything to worry about for The Abyss? Already there are people speculating that Cameron will do the same thing to it. Be a shame if we waited a couple of decades just to get a DNR fest.

That is a fair assessment of the film. I was surprised that it did so well. I consider the abyss a much better film. The scene alone with Bud and Lindsey was better then all of titanic.

I didn’t say we don’t have anything to worry about, I was offering a suggestion for why he went the DNR route. The 3D transfer was stellar.

How will you guys react if this release has at least as much DNR as Terminator 2, and if James Cameron has also used motion interpolation to get some scenes to be 60FPS?

Don't worry guys, I don’t think that will happen. It will be a good UHD

He approved it much like how he approved the last two Terminator movies, I feel he had very little involvement with how T2 and Avatar UHD were handled outside of a quick viewing.

Plus it was Studio Canal who screwed up putting the 3D version onto a 2D disc.

Titanic is better movie if you just skip to the last hour. It is amazing how the film is so simple minded and pretentious at the same time. It's not a terrible movie, but I just have to fight through the first half.

I have been a Jim Cameron superfan for most of my life. I think the guy is a legit, true, non-metaphorical genius. I was 100% ride or die up until Avatar, which I just hated...so...much. And I can only imagine that the violence of my reaction was largely due to the size of my disappointment; I loved all of his other movies, From Terminator to Titanic, so very much, that I wanted to love Avatar. And I didn't. I really, really didnt.

But that's neither here nor there. I am all about the Abyss, and if this thing ever actually gets released (I'm firmly in the "I'll believe it when the disc is spinning in my player" crowd) I will be there day one.

Although, if I'm totally, 100% honest, my favorite of the Summer '89 Water Monster flicks is still Deep Star Six. I realize this is indefensible, and yet, here we are. Maybe if The Abyss had Miguel Ferrer, I'd feel differently...though it DOES have Chris Elliott, which is now, as I type this, swaying me back in the Abyss direction...
