In theory if I buy it on iTunes I can at the very least watch the extended cut in 4K via MA?
No, extended cut is only in HD in the extras on MA.

The algorithm can't decide if it wants to go ultra smooth or ultra sharp.

I saw an opthamologist today and she said I had an eye infection and gave me some steroid drops. She said that within a few days my eyes would be back to normal and I would be able to see better than James Cameron again.

Watched the Special Edition and Aliens to see if I will buy them when they are released on UHD in March. Aliens was cancelled immediately. Unwatchable mess. The Abyss I can live with. It's not perfect, but not a complete disaster either. Tinkerbell Cameron has used the same AI fooltools just not as much. What irritates me is that it looks like a 3D presentation in 2D. 2.5D almost. Edges around characters and props have been heavily sharpened and sometimes it looks like they're objects that were on a green screen set. Almost like a cartoon come to life. The tools sharpened the background actors or props as well so you get that 3D-ish effect. Really weird to look at. Luckily much of this movie takes place in darkly lit surroundings or graded with cyan or teal colors. It helps, but that stuff in daylight or when there's heavy light from lamps around... Djees! Tinkerbell Cameron should've given these to boutique labels and just taken the cheque.

I just watched it on my old region 1 DVD and saw the theatrical version. It's still a one of a kind movie that you almost feel you participate in and years ago it was my favorite Laserdisc Special Edition that Cameron had done.

Today, I feel almost a strange disconnect from it. What's the point of it all? It's full of crises and set-pieces, but is it really just about an estranged couple that find each other again, under water, with the help of some aliens? Aliens that have no bearing on the story otherwise - they are just there. The SE is almost half an hour longer, and I clearly remember liking that version more, back in the day, but I also clearly remember growing tired of it, when I watched it years later, on that same DVD I just saw tonight.

That old DVD is perfectly watchable, by the way, but I'll probably still get the UHD and watch it again next year, and hopefully enjoy the film more.

The aliens are a very MacGuffin-y MacGuffin, as are the Cold War conflict events on the surface .

The story would have been better served had we been privy to an escalating fight above the water to parallel the one below.

For me it's all about the characters. I could sit and watch the conflict/interactions without anything else going on around them. The surroundings only enhanced the feelings I had along the way.

It is watchable, but it's a non anamorphic presentation like a bunch of early DVD releases were. It would probably look better on a 27" Sony Trinitron using an S-Video connection.

Still haven’t seen the new digital 4k release of Abyss as it’s not available over here in the U.K. Can’t find it anywhere.

So March will not come soon enough to own the disc. I’ve got the 2 disc dvd but I haven’t watched it for ages, so the 4K will be a real treat whatever.

This is obviously pure speculation on my part, but I think it possibly has something to do with the film's censorship issues over here. Disney might still be preparing a BBFC approved version of the 4K master.

I watched this today. On the whole, I found it to be a bit too smooth for my tastes, but it is watchable. I'd say this film presentation is just a hair above what I would consider to be "too processed" for my personal tastes. I'd buy the disc if I were a bigger fan of the film.

Abyss fans you dodge a bullet here albeit barely.

No he’s busy defending everything Cameron does and explaining how impossibly difficult of a monumentally Olympian task it is to open a link.

There’s literally no defending this lmao. Bill hunt: “looks fine B-”

Not watched in years so looking forward to whatever comes our way. It will definitely be a massive improvement over that dvd set. Just had a rummage through my old DVDs and found it.
My God it's terrible.
