wow.. just wow.
So, someone doesn't like film grain. Not everyone does, including filmmakers.

are we really discussing the value of removing film grain in 4k releases in this forum?
Perhaps I am misunderstanding your comment.

If filmmakers want to make new films without grain, the more power to them.
But if the films were released with grain, and then people want it removed, then I must respectfully disagree.

You can disagree and that's fine, but remember that Lucas was trying to get Kodak to make film with less grain back in the early '70s. Grain isn't everyone's friend.

Film grain is a by product of the analog nature of the medium to capture imagery and is a characteristic that most artists have striven to minimize whenever possible.

It is only recently, relatively speaking, in which filmmakers have had the luxury to intentionally incorporate film grain into the final product as an aesthetic choice.

There were times when film was the only option in which some higher profile filmmakers and DPs made efforts to actually choose grainier stock as an artistic choice rather than a concession due to budgetary reasons.

Yet, to this day for the most part aggressive degraining in general just results in compromised picture fidelity and I find it far more preferable to apply a gentle lowpass filter and leave the rest to just be. Otherwise further tinkering is simply going to cause more problems than benefits.

iTunes has the streaming digital version on sale for $9.99 (as well as True Lies). I have just the SD version from a Vudu d2d several years ago. So, may end up getting it to see how it looks in HD/4K. It’s been years since I saw the HD copy that Prime used to have available off and on for years till it was removed.

For accusations of "toxicity" directed at critique of these remasters I'd like to remind everyone the "let people enjoy things" crowd has so far told another user to "suck a you-know-what," tossed accusations of psychopathy and other such mental illnesses and disabilities (OCD comes up a lot, y'all have no idea what that is), and more. The insults are very interesting coming from, well, people who gas up positivity. Talk of toxicity is whispered in the wings and there it is, but why it counts only selectively or must be memory-holed is anyone's guess!

That said, I'm passing on this one. Everyone must know.

Regular criticism is fine but the folks who make it their holy crusade bore me. So now I can visit all the Cameron movie threads and enjoy discussion about the good and the bad and breeze thru the threads in half the time.
I simply have no time for people who can't discuss anything without tossing around petty name calling and insults (always themed around weird sexual comments and mental illness, oddly!) and then play the game like it's the other side with the problem. (I've seen both of them do this, but one of them has been naughtier than the other but we aren't supposed to talk about that) Which brings me to the other point, watering all this down to "sides" and "cliques." It's so old! People never left high school!

If y'all want to keep at it then be my guest. I will grab my popcorn and...watch something else.

iTunes having the 4K streaming version for $10 right now makes me go ahead and jump on it. I'll probably end up getting the disc but having this now works for this price.

Also 9.99 on Vudu

I'll wait for the UHDs for True Lies and Aliens, but I had to bite for The Abyss on Apple TV. And I'll pick up the disc if I can get a good deal on DMC.

I got the $5 Coca-Cola Amazon credit yesterday, and used it for the $9.99 sale on the UHD Theatrical Edition. I understand the 4K SE version on Amazon won't port to MA, and iTunes is my main platform.

I've only watched about 45 minutes, but it's tolerable. I was a vocal opponent of what happened to the Aliens 4K stream, way too much DNR.

The Abyss has a lot of good, but some scenes that look a bit overdone. Like they just needed to back off the DNR by one step, and it would have been great. The colors seem a bit on the teal side, but if you haven't seen another version, it should be fine.

I did a A/B with the HD recording I took from DirecTV/STARZ. Yeah, there's way too much compression on that on to really enjoy on a big screen.

In summary, the 4K is probably going to be fine for 99% of viewers, and I'm pretty picky. For $20 I would have been a little disappointed, but at $10 (or especially $5), it's enjoyable.

I too could not resist getting the streamable version for $10. Will probably double dip later and only get discs for Aliens and True Lies.

I had only seen it on a low quality tv (and in standard definition) back in the day, so I'm just kind of astonished at how beautiful this movie is; though, I wish the image wasn't as tampered with. But I am having a good experience.

How dare you pass up on a James Cameron movie, everyone knows he's 100% correct on everything and his ideas are amazing

I can’t understand why none of the digital 4K releases haven’t landed in the U.K yet on iTunes or Amazon. Don’t the studios like the £! I just want to see the Abyss and True Lies. Stills are fine but I’d like to see them in motion. I’ve pre-ordered True Lies on disc along with Aliens as that hasn’t upgraded to 4k yet over here. As soon as The Abyss goes live for pre-order on 4K disc I’ll pre-order.

We might not get The Abyss, it depends on how Disney want to deal with the BBFC and/or submitting a uncut version (or wanting to release a cut one). I think there's a French release.

Hopefully we will get it, it might just be a late pre-order.

The UK had issues with ratings. He's not talking about the USA domestic release.
