Isn't that the whole point though? They are people who share the same belief systems and moral compasses as the majority of potential audience members who rely on a ratings system to help guide the viewing choices for themselves and their families.

Does it bother me that films end up being cut because of the recommendations they make? Hell, yeah, it does. But it's the studios and production companies who are at fault IMO because instead of saying "Okay, we'll release this film as an R-rating and take our chances" they acquiesce and agree to those cuts because PG-13 = $$$.

I know the discussion has diverged somewhat but the MPAA’s rating system and rules tends to have a knock on effect for the rest of the world. Years ago film studios would just get whatever film they were releasing in a state fit to pass for an R or PG-13 rating then that same cut would then be offered up to the rest of the world. Rarely would a distributer go to the trouble of actually editing up a new version bespoke to whatever guidelines that country might have.

These aren't outdated laws, their just laws that aren't always applied equally or what some consider rationally. There are just too many, "What about X? that wasn't cut..."

In the Theatrical Cut there is a panning camera shot of Lindsey walking from frame right to left that is longer in the Special Edition.

With the Special Edition the full pan is present and there is a dropped frame mid pan.
This was visible in the recent theatrical screening.

1:06:12 Theatrical Cut

1:24:26 Special Edition

***
1:24:30 The dropped frame occurs here.

The frame after the dropped frame is the same frame that starts the pan in the TC.

The extended cut of The Abyss was recently shown on Finnish television. It had the rat scene, but I noticed it was edited shorter and closeup of the rat gasping for air and breathing liquid was removed. I presumed it was a British copy.

In recent years US studios have looked to the BBFC for guidance because there is some back and forth. So they'll edit PG-13 pictures for a 12A rating.

Now it seems hey want to maximize the potential audience, PG-13 being the sweet-spot, Rated R, less so, and NC-17 a disaster. I'm sure they'd love the BBFC to introduce some kind of 15A rating allowing children over 12 to be allowed in accompanied by an adult.

Isn't that what they still do for the most part?

I mean, apart from the UK excising specific animal and child content in order to comply with legislation, which has always been a thing seeing as the animal cruelty law has been in place since 1937.

You guys act like ratings can't be appealed. Which they have been successfully, multiple times.

I'm not saying the system can't be improved, but FFS you can't throw out the baby with the bathwater.

You disagree with Twister's PG-13?

Opening scene alone would scare the shit out of little kids.

I was 8 when I saw it in theaters. Nothing wrong with having a healthy fear of tornadoes.

The BBFC are weird. I agree that their hands are bound in some instances and that they have to abide by the law, but the fact that you can't buy a UK copy of I Spit on Your Grave without extensive cuts is insane. It's not real.

So are you saying you agree with children being forced into psychological trauma from watching a tornado movie?
