They look very close to black but not black.
It is a jpg from imgur but I set it against a complete black background. ![]() |

Blu-ray Samurai

What do you think of the Nova in motion compared to the Criterion? I think the CC isn’t a demo disc but feels accurate to the unglamorous source and I was never bothered by the artifacts while watching. Your caps also evoke that the Nova filtered the digital noise but it could also be improved compression. |

The Witch Lionsgate BL/BL+FEL
![]() ![]() 100 nits I placed the BLs at the bookends so you can compare them against each other, as well as each BL against its corresponding BL+FEL. https://slow.pics/c/zhypitaK |

Withnail & I Arrow BD (2014)
![]() ![]() These are the same releases as in the previous comparisons, but now at 150 nits to showcase the different color timing. Both approved by the original DP. https://slow.pics/c/dilwsL6j This one is interesting, maybe just a difference between scanning at 2K vs 4K? https://slow.pics/c/8oqYYcIu |

I can't do a comparison just like Kobe and neither have the German SC version but I have the French one and it's very slightly better than the Criterion but really not by much. The German one is probably encoded by the one authoring house they always use for the European stuff - the one that uses the same menu layout across different titles and formats. If they did it, it's okay in DV FEL otherwise it'll be full of chroma noise.
