Kino use Handbrake to do their encodes, single pass, turbo mode.

It looks exactly like that. Pretty much my settings for ungraded rough cuts I upload to YouTube for client review.

I only looked at the first one but the compression of the HDR10 on SC looked better than the Kino WITH DV, and even more so than the Kino BL. Is this what to expect overall?

Looks like I’ll keep the SC UHD and pick up the Kino for the region A BD.

Oh how I wish Kino discs looked as good as they did with Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. It was a wash with a FIM encode.

They look like that even though they’re using a professional software, ATEME Titan. This software probably has similar templates or a slider to adjust the GB size of the final encode, which makes it even easier. What we do know thanks to Kobe is that they’re using color profiles for B&W titles so it’s probably one generic HDR template across all titles.

Does the Second Sight actually look like that? The compression is a bit iffy. Any chance the labels were accidentally swapped (i.e. the SS ones are actually the Plaion ones and vice-versa)?

The sky in this one in particular doesn’t look great:

Great work btw. Liking all these comparisons.

The source labels are correct. The SS looks great in motion.

Happy with my Plaion disc, then... Although it looks a tad too bright!

Keep up the good work, Kobe! Truly appreciate your efforts!

With the SS being director approved, the Plaion looks a bit overbaked tbh. They're usually very reliable but this has the aesthetic of a Turbine "we thought it was too dull and made it pop more".

The Plaion release looks grainier to me than the Second Sight disc, and it's colour timing also seems comparable to the US DVD (which I owned prior to the 4K disc), with the exception of the pre-sunset scenes in the movie, where the DVD features warmer colour temperature.

I don't know which 4K is truer to source, but I'm also inclined not to put too much stock in "director approved" labels...

i certainly wouldn't take an old DVD as a reference for the grading btw. that said, Plaion looks like better encoded even if i think they pushed a tad too far the HDR knob with the results of appearing a bit "too much". well before the SS release i thought Plaion was a bit "sharpened" (while i did like it very much):

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...6&postcount=38

SS appears to be a little less "pop" in a good way but the encoding it's not the best ever seen. in fact, as per the booklet in the LE, this is NOT a Fidelity joint.

i''m keeping both releases.

Yeah, I don't "seriously" take DVDs as reference for colour timing and I'm not bothered much by (subtle) changes thereof. As I posted earlier, to me the Plaion disc felt slightly too bright. But what I really can't stand is lack of grain retention (in this case apparently due to Second Sight's encode, which is something of a novelty, since their releases usually feature spot-on encodes!), so I'll gladly go with Plaion.

This is a really good encode by Criterion. Except for highlights and some chroma noise, they’ve become solid. Of course, FiM remains the gold standard but they can’t encode everything and Criterion won’t change. Thankfully, their authoring house got ahold of the justified criticism and improved to a degree that they’re now among the better boutiques that do standard high-bitrate encoding. Shout also got the drill and that’s more important than ever with their crazy lineups.
