Bleh, stick with the Scream Factory blu-ray. 4K is so inconsistent

Typical Pixelogic low-pass filter on the Lionsgate and more or less chroma noise on the other two. I haven’t gone throo all caps but think the German is the best one overall.

Lionsgate have put out some excellent blus in terms of the overall package but dat Pixelogic compression will always leave me wondering if anything was left on the table.

Exactly this and if they’re bad… whew. I got their BD of The Iron Claw after the horrendous Leonine 4K mediabook and Pixelogic did just as bad a job with all the grain turning into pixel mush blankets every couple of frames, which bothered me even more than the KL-type 4K encode. Finally I found a good one in the French Métropolitain BD which I anticipated to be as bad as ze German one but apart from localized titles a very good encode. Luckily, NexSpec / Pixelogic fiddled with their settings for the better as of late and we’ve been treated with some really good encodes. Something like The Last Picture Show (Criterion) would’ve been outright unthinkable not long ago.

Anthropophagus has been similarly "managed" (on some shots, not on the whole movie), especially comparing their very same old release in bd (which i've kept) where grain is perfect throughout. cannibal holocaust is also managed.
I only received Project A today and it’s definitely not grain-managed. I haven’t seen both in their entirety in such a short time but it’d surprise me if something egregious pops up. This is a truly beautiful release and can’t say anything bad about 88.

I might be wrong but isn’t FiM picky about which discs they author? If it is the case, I don’t think they’d take up a master that was botched.

Might be a case-by-case decision for them. I got the new Carlotta set of four Stanley Kwan films last week and they were all DNR’d (one heavily) and David encoded them all as well as he could. The heavily DNR’d one also has strong banding in darker shots which must be inherited in the master. Second Sight gave the encode to the party that did the remaster of Picnic at Hanging Rock as it wouldn’t have made much difference had they hired him.

99% time, when these boutiques make an in-house job the end risult is nice/great; no doubt that other times they must handle what they've been given to. heard about some grain management/frozen grain on the upcoming Trick 'r treat by arrow; pretty sure that's baked into the master, just as their bad Witness UHD (provided by paramount). had some doubts on 88 especially after having watched their Anthro 4k. their old bd release (the remastered one) was way more natural grain-wise. of course, detail, color, blacks are all in favour of UHD disc but the point stands. but with them it's not the first time i spotted some management. Fist of Legend is quite blatant. happy for Project A anyway.

Trick or Treat is 100% an upscale from the 2K master and the booklet info an error, otherwise we would’ve gotten some sense of new detail in comparison even if the director wanted to use DNR. Someone called me crazy for suggesting this but I stand by what I saw after Kobe‘s caps and FWIW don’t mind in the slightest that this is the case as the improvements in color and encoding are significant enough to make this valuable.
