Time Bandits

Criterion UHD BL+FEL vs Arrow UHD HDR10

203 nits

https://slow.pics/c/YLn7AItB

Did a side-by-side and the Criterion base layer has a lot of noticeable chroma artifacts and blotchy grain. It is noticeable in motion against the Arrow. The caps show that the FEL layer does not resolve the filtered grain and chroma artifacts.

Arrow betta.

The goof in the Arrow Gilliam asked to be removed in the Criterion is far more noticeable than any grain differences in motion:
https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=1&x...&l=0&i=18&go=1

Criterion is definitely the overall victor here. Arrow maybe a better encode, but a worse master. Reminds me of Fear and Loathing where Arrow had nice encoding, but master had wrong color timing. Criterion seems to do a better job on the Gilliam releases, they must have a better relationship with him.

How long does that last? Was it in the original theatrical release? Genuine questions, not being combative.

its like one shot, but just like any movie with a glitch that is one shot, i'd take a slightly worse encode than a goof or a glitch. immersion breaker far worse than barely perceptible quality loss

re: theatrical release, dont know - but resolution of 4K UHD + HDR contrast on a modern TV exposes things that were not visibly apparent theatrically in the 80s

Yeah, it’s not “slightly” worse. The grain looks mushy, and the poor chroma compression is distracting, to say the least.

I’ll take 2 hours of a spotless encode with one “goof” over an encode with distractingly “immersion-breaking” chroma artifacts throughout its runtime.

Did the same with Grease. Went back to the warpaint edition after the 'fixed' version introduced random brightness shifts for no apparent reason.

Whoever’s doing Lionsgate’s A24 BDs has messed up settings. The same issue affected Past Lives as well and they compressed that film under 25GB despite using a BD-50. Initially I thought the raised blacks were intentional as the film was graded like that but when comparing against the 4K stream, the BD is clearly raised even further. I then got the UK BD from SC and it’s all set properly on that one.
