I thought I wouldn't detect a difference playing these side-by-side, but the Vinegar Syndrome release noticeably retains the dye clouds, while they are completely absent on the L'atelier d'images.
Completely absent? There's still plenty of the yellow/blue mottling of the dye clouds on the L'Atelier, but there's what looks like quite untidy chroma containment on the VS which is polluting the colour and making it look noisier.

Oh, that could be possible. I just couldn't really see the dye clouds on the L'atelier or maybe I was seeing the noise in the VS and thinking it was dye clouds. I'll correct the post, thank you.

Untidy chroma containment with the FiM encode? Didn't take a look. Not even at my disc actually (which tells you quite a bit about my current state of movie watching). But I do wonder if Geoff didn't realize.

Why? Would I have changed my opinion on what was said otherwise?

Did you know?

EDIT: To answer your question: Don't know. Just think you would have phrased it differently had you known.

Default Blazing Saddles (1974)

Please note, the compilation below includes both HDR and SDR images, so recommended to have HDR mode ON and view the HDR PQ images (#1-2) on an HDR display, and SDR mode for the SDR images (#3-4) for best accuracy.

Thanks as always for these! It looks to be a nice upgrade: better skintones and more visible grain, more along the lines of what one would expect for VistaVision. Overall, I am quite happy with what I'm seeing.

Default Seven Samurai (1954) - Toho vs. Criterion

I am pleasantly surprised by how much clean-up work Criterion did with Toho's master, not to mention the excellent grain retention and difference in contrast. I did notice a frame with a strange anomaly in Criterion's encode, but it seems to be an outlier. Although I do have a feeling the very top encode will be BFI's DV/HDR presentation, that remains to be seen.

What???!! Criterion of all labels brought back detail and grain from that Toho master? Incredible. So it’s their encode to blame at least partially. I’m really really surprised by this just as much and the BFI can’t come soon enough now. Hopefully they’ll have High and Low already in the works and ready to go soon if that’s what we can look forward to.
