I got the Kino solely because I’m a huge Friedkin fan and for the new master. While the grade on its own is good, I wish they’d have tuned the colors more closely to how Friedkin wanted his film to look. Definitely not as creamy and degrained but "black and white in color", which the solid Paramount BD definitely evokes better than the colorful KL. Kino cashed in quickly after Friedkin’s passing and essentially ignored the film’s intended look even though clear evidence is present.

Also, perplexingly, the entire reel from which this screenshot (https://slow.pics/c/MJfW6INy?image-fit=contain) was taken is from a much worse source than the OCN and even compared with the Paramount. Paired with KL’s encoding and we’ve got a special dish of pixel mush here.

I imagine this is the second 17 MB/s DV FEL Sony disc after Little Women 94. I’ve pre-ordered both of these a while ago and already regret it. It also looks like the encoder generously filtered the underlying master.

I mainly do the comparisons for myself and posting them is secondary. I’ll only do movies in which I'm interested. Maybe someone else who has the disc can do them.

The BD has more of a "teal" grade while I confirmed in HDR that the UHD does not. I can smell the socks coming.

Quick question: I’ve seen you’ve changed your capturing settings from spline to hable to preserve highlight detail. Is the latter one more appropriate in getting back midrange detail compared to spline?

In my scripts spline is easier to automate but clips slightly at the top end, resulting in a prettier picture.

Hable, on the other hand, preserves highlights a bit better, imo, but is more prone to miscalculating peak brightness, sometimes setting it too low and clipping the highlights. It can also raise shadows up, so darker scenes will look brighter but luminance shouldn't be judged anyway. This is why I've been taking fewer screenshots lately, as I have to check each one and redo some.
