Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse SDR vs HDR comparison

HDR screenshots, in order to view them correctly on Windows, you must use a Chromium browser with Windows HDR enabled, and the brightness slider set to the value of 31.

Where the hell does that Kailedoscope screencaps come from? Considering the DRM is heavy on that sh*t.

That's incredibly odd, the K-scape encode kinda fluctuates in quality between different caps. Sometimes it shows much more grain than the BD, other times a bit less, sometimes the grain is more or less pronounced than the WEB-DLs.

I just got my Kaleidescape Strato E, so I'm focusing on movies I like for now (yeah, I like stupid movies), but once I'm done, I'll have a look.

I'd love to see Independence Day and Star Trek 2009 comparisons, since those ones are rather infamous for their poor encodes on UHD due to being VERY early discs. And with you having a Strato E I'm guessing it means you're just doing direct captures from your Strato for this?

Figured, since there's no Dolby Vision and the initial ones were all SDR, and I KNOW for a fact it's not that hard to bypass HDCP 2.3 and capture HDR10 lossless. It's the best we'll have until 10 years from now when K-scape goes under and people finally crack their DRM.

I don't think they use stronger or different DRM than any typical streaming website or device.

The real issue is that the store is accessible only through very expensive players, and no one wants to risk those devices getting blacklisted.

Thanks for sharing. What is your impression on Kal. implementation of Dolby Vision? They encode using a different profile than 4k blu-ray disc.

So far, some of the HDR10/DV titles (Mad Max, The Accountant, The Last of Us) I tested were pretty bad and disappointing: washed-out colors, raised blacks, incorrect brightness, and worse compression than the Blu-ray Disc. You can read about my first experience with it here.

Then I tested Poor Things (a mixed bag) and Without Remorse (pretty good).
So maybe I just got unlucky with my first three titles, but I definitely expected more for the price tag. Even until recently, they had many DV releases with incorrect colors, so they don’t seem very good and clearly lack quality control, but at least they listen to us and are open to fixing the problems we find.

As for the DV implementation, they use Profile 5, which offers the same quality as Profile 7 because DVP5 uses a more efficient color space that equals about 11.5-bit YCbCr, while P7 FEL is 12-bit YCbCr, but in the end, it doesn’t matter, and there won’t be any visible difference on our 10-bit TVs.

Their SDR is solid and accurate across all the titles I’ve checked... Just did Bad Teacher, and it’s a great upgrade.

P.S. I won’t be posting everything I check here, but you can follow my screenshot comparison Excel sheet here.

sorry for my English...

Oh wow, have they really finally fixed the hideous pink tint that has plagued this title forever on home video?

Edit: nope, guess not, the first couple caps look greener but that's it

That"s pretty disappointing, I was hoping the more smushy grain on some K-Scape encode caps you posted was just from re-encoding or something but it's unfortunate that it's just a problem with them. They handle all the encodes themselces so I suppose it's not durprising they'd tinker with them.
