Star Trek (2009)

UHD-BD (madVR/SDR/200 nits) left, BD (upscaled) right:

Disclaimer:
[Show spoiler]Please note that the UHD-BD shots have been converted from HDR to SDR using special techniques, which drastically compresses the dynamic range of the original image (the color bit depth has been compressed as well). The UHD-BD shots are therefore not an accurate representation of the original HDR image - dynamic range, colors and contrast should be taken with a big pinch of salt and the main focus should be on comparing details. Typically the image will appear too dark and may lack a certain "pop" when compared to the BD shots. The SDR conversion should still give you a good idea of the actual image of the UHD-BD though and one should be able to at least catch a glimpse of the increased dynamic range. The BD shots have been upscaled for comparison purposes, but other than that should be accurate.

...really? The added detail in the UHD is easy to spot.

Kingsman

Zero complaints here.

Excellent stuff. I've been saying from the moment I laid eyes on it for myself that Kingsman really did have more detail than the BD.

You can really see the blanket color temperature on the BD’s I sound like a broken record but what I love most about this format is it’s more neutral and balanced palette.

To be fair the UHD does look a bit pinky in comparison, but that could just be down to the SDR conversion and what it's doing to the gamut. In any case, it loses that yellowy tint of the BD and that makes Geoffy happy.

Yes, I noticed the pink touch in comparison as well, the most pronounced one being the last one imo, but I also assumed that this is just a result of the SDR conversion, especially since there appears to be HDR going on. I also have it on my to-do list to check back what the Panasonic does with that scene.

Considering this was shot in 8K what a waste of source resolution.

That extra 1.6k was resolved really well for both Kingsman.

I find that stuff shot anamorphic in general tends to upscale extremely well, I mean we don't know what filtering has been done to the equivalent Blu of course but there's something about using that full height of the frame/sensor that often bakes in a superior image.

Relevant subjects? The bouquet of flowers is literally front and center in that shot.

Here's another one for you, front and center:

If you really think there's no difference between the two, then I don't know what to tell you.

There's more resolution or there isn't. In this case, there is.

To be fair, the actual detail increase with "Justice League" is a very minor one imo and you really have to look for it. There wouldn't be a discussion otherwise. Also mind you, that I tend to take caps where I expect some detail increase to begin with (the flowers being such an example), but you still have to look for it in those here.

"Kingsman" on the other hand is much better in that regard and the detail increase is really easy to spot there. With "Justice League" the better compression outweighs the actual detail increase by far though imho.
