The issues are quite visible on my monitor and that's just viewing the captures below 1080p (if I open them in a new window the page displays them pillar-boxed).

To be fair, if I cue up that exact same frame of Snoke from the UHD on my TV then those rampant lego blocks around the guards' legs are almost invisible, but the 'fizziness' around their outlines is still very much there. So, seeing as the artefacts in the other timestamp I referenced above are clearly visible to me then I wonder just how much worse the screencap will make them look!

That's always one of the things that worries me when new formats are introduced - that studios half-arse the previous formats. We really should see the best each format as to offer when providing content, whether it's DVD, BD or UHD BD.

We're still getting some stellar DVD releases, but we often get some lazy ones as well (Fox have managed to stop caring with some titles).

Indeed, there's always the 'see it in-motion' caveat when looking at comparisons.

Most studios stopped caring about creating a quality DVD a looong time back and some have been sleepwalking throughout the Blu-ray era as well. But when a new format comes along it's always a tricky time for enthusiasts like us because we're having to contend with the studios devoting less time and money to competently master the 'lesser' version(s) AND the stumbling baby steps of the new format that usually result in several clunkers as well.

I thought maybe you're using Edge.

Try one of the frames from 1h37m24s into Last Jedi, when Snoke is sitting on his throne. Thanks.

Yes, I can see it here as well, especially when going forward frame by frame. Tried to pick a frame where I thought it looked worst.

I can see frames much worse than that when stepping through it on my TV (not that I can't blatantly see it in motion, 'cause I can), though that'll be a hard sell to anyone looking at that cap as they'll say "is that what Geoffy was wibbling on about? Can hardly see any blocking" but I can only reiterate that that red background is alive with some pretty hefty (for 4K) blocking on my TV.

Maybe your setup really happens to somehow boost it (?).

I took two, so here's the other one, but I don't think it's worse than the first one (which actually happens to be the second one):

Like I said, I can see sth going on there, but I don't think I'd consider it a major problem.

EDIT: Maybe the SDR also happens to hide it better (?).
EDIT#2: I looked at it again in motion and I really can't see anything that I'd call blocking there.

There's an impressive increase in detail in those TLJ shots! The BD is no slouch but the UHD is blummin' lovely.

I didn't see any ugliness in the reds during the throne room when I watched the other night. I'll have a peek tonight though.

Mary And The Witch's Flower

UHD-BD (madVR/SDR/200 nits) left, BD (upscaled) right

Disclaimer as to why the UHD-BD images may appear to be too dim:
[Show spoiler]Please note that the UHD-BD shots have been converted from HDR to SDR using special techniques, which drastically compresses the dynamic range of the original image (the color bit depth has been compressed as well). The UHD-BD shots are therefore not an accurate representation of the original HDR image - dynamic range, colors (tone and intensity) and contrast should be taken with a big pinch of salt and the main focus should be on comparing details. Typically, the image will appear too dark, may lack a certain "pop" and may at times also appear "boosted" when compared to the BD shots. The SDR conversion should still give you a good idea of the actual image of the UHD-BD though and one should also be able to at least catch a glimpse of the increased dynamic range. The BD shots have been upscaled for comparison purposes, but other than that should be accurate. You might also want to check out this post of mine (incl. the further link there) where I tried to show/explain this:

Wow, does that UHD look spectacular!

I wish I could justify ~$100 for a blind-buy movie.

Didn't see anime in 4K before, but it looks significantly crisper. Hopefully the same will be with Ghost in the Shell movies.

I think Mary And The Witch's Flower was digitally animated in 2K. The native 4K restored cel-drawn anime got UHD releases were Tomorrow's Joe 2: The Movie, Space Adventure Cobra, Mobile Suit Gundam F91 and Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack.

Pardon my noob question here, but why is this not possible? Aren't the bit depth and colors of the master likely to be superior to what can be displayed through rec709?

Yes. There's no reason why anything should automatically be excluded from benefiting from a HDR transfer. Unless we know for a fact that it was only produced in rec709.

Well, that would technically be WCG, not HDR.

Yeah, people seem to confuse color space and dynamic range.
