I know that DNR is usually considered to be basically a mortal sin around here, but on GitS it doesn't look that bad. There's still detail and some light grain in the picture. It looks really pleasing and pretty sharp. It's definitely the best it's ever looked, even outdoing the theatrical screening I saw in 2017. Hope you'll post Innocence shots soon!

The image is definitely contrastier and many murkier shots have more definition and fine detail.

Diving shot - Motoko recovers her hair. Cop with a signal stick - UHD looks objectively worse. Shot with the blonde under rain - UHD buries BD.

Anyway, yeah, this bunch of comparisons convinced me to buy the new release.

It's not the tool itself I have a problem with, it's whether it's applied with taste and sensitivity. Those shots still have a genuine semblance of fine texture to them, even more so than the BD in several instances (which appears to have had its own round of noise reduction or black clipping in some of the darker spots, shadow detail is routinely erased on the BD). Still gotta see how it looks in motion for a definite yay or nay from me, but I'm very much looking forward to it.

What's also interesting, some shots have only part of the image DNR'ed, similarly to Blade Runner UHD.

Not a fan, especially not considering the price. Looks weird when some parts have grain and others look like digital animation. Compression doesn't look particularly good either.

I suppose it might be OK if there's just less grain and not constantly trailing/smearing. Is the Blu-ray included in the separate release the old one or from the new master? If it's the old one that might be an option for me, at least I'll have both.

Both discs (to my surprise) worked yesterday already, but like I said in the other thread, I don't have any Innocence BD to compare the UHD to, so you'll have to wait for someone else to do it.

Since caps have already been posted in the other thread, there's also no need for just UHD caps.

Not rude at all.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Interesting the recent Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales shots.

I actually just rewatched it this past weekend on the Q9FN and I gotta say while I was watching it I couldn't help but consistently think about how fantastic the HDR was in it.

It's definitely in the upper echelon of UHD Blus IMO solely because of the incredible use of WCG and HDR. Like most Disney titles though, the 4K detail upgrade doesn't seem to be there though.

In case you missed these:

1: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=830
2: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=887

The first one was still rather "half-assed" though ("view image" is your friend with both, didn't upscale the BD yet with part 1 and the first frame still doesn't match).

I can do the others as well, if you're interested, won't do all at once though.

Dead Men does have some nice 2K DI detail increase in many of the caps imho.

Seemed so minimal I was chalking it up to enhanced contrast from the HDR grade.

Oh yes, now I remember your screenshots, too bad you resized back at 1080p back at the time.

Transformers 3 is welcome, when you have the time.

It's big enough to result in a noticably sharper image even when downscaled to 1080p.

Not really. I just didn't upscale the 1080p BD caps to 2160p back then - UHD has always been 2160 (also with Transformers).

OK. Will do. The last one of the series I actually really enjoyed and even more so than #2.

Oh yes, I got the UHD working in full size now.

Yes, I liked #3 as well, plus it was shot on film.

From the other topic. I thought I'd put Ghost In the Shell 2: Innocence screenshots in this topic as well.

BD left, UHD-BD right (obviously )

So the "compression" sucks here with both indeed.

The UHD looked rather smeared here to me without having any reference and it is indeed. But I also wanted to see the dynamic range of the BD as I thought this scene looked very nice on the UHD (and also does so in comparison imo). (Based on this BD, I think I'd still prefer the smeared BD here btw. - the aliasing isn't nice.)

The eye shot looked very nice to me on the UHD (the colors) which is why I wanted to see a BD cap. (and it really does look very nice to me in comparison - that is, again, at least when compared to this BD)

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

I also captured a good amount of actual Transformers and did't want to discard any of the caps. With Michael Bay there also happen to be way more "scenes" to choose from - it's not because I love that movie so much (still like part 3 though).

BD (upscaled) left, UHD-BD (madVR/SDR/200 nits) right

Disclaimer as to why the UHD-BD images may appear to be too dim:
[Show spoiler]Please note that the UHD-BD shots have been converted from HDR to SDR using special techniques, which drastically compresses the dynamic range of the original image (the color bit depth has been compressed as well). The UHD-BD shots are therefore not an accurate representation of the original HDR image - dynamic range, colors (tone and intensity) and contrast should be taken with a big pinch of salt and the main focus should be on comparing details. Typically, the image will appear too dark (which is by design when the caps are done at 200 nits), may lack a certain "pop" and may at times also appear "boosted" when compared to the BD shots. The SDR conversion should still give you a good idea of the actual image of the UHD-BD though and one should also be able to at least catch a glimpse of the increased dynamic range. The BD shots have been upscaled for comparison purposes, but other than that should be accurate. They did an amazing job on them. I saw signs of chroma noise back when I first watched them (which would later loom so large on SPR's UHD) but that's a very minor quibble and rewatching them in DV should clean that up nicely. Incidentally, the caps for the MI movies look much the same in terms of the chroma noise in the HDR10 layer, it's there if you look for it but in DV I'm sure they'll be fine.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

If one (for obvious reasons) doesn't want to go through all of them resp. just wants to see some detail increase, one might want to compare #1, #18, #26 (may be the most prominent one) or #21 for example. There are others as well, but the BD does hold up pretty well detail-wise quite often (but still looks more "flat" then of course).
