Just a couple of Pixar caps...

I won't be doing more with "Dinosaur" and "Cars", but I might with both "Inside Out" and "Nemo" (I'll post some more of the the latter at any rate, but I had that one, so I included it). At least a couple of the others wil follow some time later as well.

Be careful with/ignore the colours of Dinosaur. It's a very bright one (and doesn't work well with madVR). Cars is the exact opposit btw. (which is why the colours look much better on the UHD with that one).

I know it's not much (# of caps I mean), but it's better than nothing.

BD (upscaled) | UHD-BD (madVR/SDR/200 nits)

Disclaimer as to why the UHD-BD images may appear to be too dim and please ignore any off-looking colours:
[Show spoiler]Please note that the UHD-BD shots have been converted from HDR to SDR using special techniques, which drastically compresses the dynamic range of the original image (the colour bit depth has been compressed as well). The UHD-BD shots are therefore not an accurate representation of the original HDR image - dynamic range, colours (tone and intensity) and contrast should be taken with a big pinch of salt and the main focus should be on comparing details. Typically, the image will appear too dark (which is by design when the caps are done at 200 nits; on its own they should be viewed with monitor brightness set to 200 nits), may lack a certain "pop" and may at times also appear "boosted" when compared to the BD shots. The SDR conversion should still give you a good idea of the actual image of the UHD-BD though and one should also be able to at least catch a glimpse of the increased dynamic range. The BD shots have been upscaled for comparison purposes, but other than that should be accurate. You might also want to check out this post of mine (incl. the further link there) where I tried to show/explain this:

Ratatouille

Ratatouille is an Alita kind of upgrade.

Finding Nemo

So much for adding "a couple of" Nemo caps.

In general: Much better colours (often actually toned down - prime example being the orange of Nemo and Co.), lots of removed clipping and more detail. The BD also really doesn't like Dory.

You'll find that the additional caps (while sometimes rather bright) don't show that much more detail. The major improvements are there at lower nits already (and the BD is just not very good in that regard IMHO). Point being: The additional caps aren't really needed.

I did add some comments this time because of the many caps and so you won't miss certain caps I'd like you to see. I might have forgotten some comments and other caps have nice improvements as well.

All the September Pixars are worthy upgrades for better colours alone IMO (while still being too expensive for my liking) btw. and Ratatouile (while still nice) is actually the least impressive one of the bunch. I think I'll do more as well, but don't know when.

All that extra chroma resolution really comes into play with CG animated stuff. Wow.

Default subdued color on 4K UHD compared to BD?

I found some movie's 4K release seem to have less vibrant colors.

I was checking out resident evil: afterlife and it is (a technical term) less colorful than I remembered watching the BD.

The top one is the BDs and bottom is UHD. They are not captured from the same site but it confirms what I saw between the 2 versions.

Although this is only one movie, I had a feeling about other ones I have watched, just can't name the title right now.
Do you guys know any other movies that got the less color treatment?

Why don’t you bring this up in the specific thread for the movie instead of creating a new thread.

What's with the massive 4K concern trolling concentration this week?

Are we in our yearly 'HDR is crayons' vortex, or something?

"Brave" was the next on my list, I do have caps already, but I'll upload them only sometime next week.

While I'm at it, really just a couple of Marrowbone caps I had after (mostly) taking a look at its windows: (didn't even watch this yet, just read about the very bright windows, so peeked and took a look)

I watched Detective Pikachu with the kids 2 days ago. That definitely looks like it has some subdued colours when compared to the blu-ray. And Incredibles 2.
Most others I've seen, it's the other way round.

Think San Andreas looked very different on UHD to the point many preferred the BD colour timing.

I thought the same thing about Wreck it Ralph but it was only the 3rd movie I saw in 4K before I set my TV to my liking. Never had this problem since then.

I don’t there’s any actual trolling going on here.

From what I’ve experienced, 4K can sometimes be a little inconsistent.

First of all, my TV has a really bad “dirty screen effect” (nice lovely four-inch block going across my entire screen, among other “dirty” parts that’s most noticeable when I’m watching a 4K disc especially during dark scenes) so I can’t say for sure how a lot of things are “supposed” to look, but during outdoor or bright scenes, my picture looks absolutely gorgeous, but darker scenes are kind of bleh. Idk if it’s a problem with my settings but I’ve tried different combos and nothing seems to help.

Someone in the thread mentioned Incredibles 2, which is funny because that’s one that I also thought the 4K was a little underwhelming with.

I think it can be a little jarring for some people when they make the switch to UHD because they expect everything to be dialed up to 11 like their TV is on Super Vivid mode, so they are confused when what they get is a far more natural, nuanced presentation with greater color depth as opposed to colors that are over-cooked to hell and back. This is especially prevalent with animated films. Trolls is a great example.

In all honesty, RE Afterlife on UHD sometimes does look like it has the color sucked out of it. Not sure if this is the intended look or that perhaps something went wrong. I've only seen it once though, since I very much prefer the 3D version.

Having said that though, some UHD discs might seem less colorful at first when compared to their 1080p SDR counterparts, but that's only because the colors have been jacked up on the regular Blu-ray releases in order to compensate for the shortcomings of REC709 I believe.
