Bill & Ted Face the Music

Another quick one. Opposed to Possession, where I don't mind, the lack of HDR is just a real shame here. And I actually included some "comparison-could've-beens" only to make that blatantly obvious. Clearly noticable pq upgrade is still there of course.

Total Recall

Money well spent... Mind you that the comparison is me just counterchecking the SC-HDR10-hall-of-shame of course. With those scenes it isn't biased/frame-cherry-picking at all though.

Leatherface (2017)

Pq wise there's no contest and I actually considered not doing a comparison at all (and post only 4K caps instead), after I lay eyes on the BD, because it seemed somewhat futile to me. Having said that, the BD not being a very good one, is certainly playing a part here as well - don't know if there are better ones out there (doubt it though and think they will basically look the same).

The 4K on its own looks a little sharpened to my eyes, which might very well be inherent to the source (I'm not talking about the obvious real detail increase).

Didn't watch this yet, so the caps are somewhat random and I didn't know where to look for HDR in particular, but caught some examples anyway. It destroys the BD no matter what.

Turbine BD (upscaled) | UHD-BD (madVR/SDR/200 nits)

Disclaimer as to why the UHD-BD images may appear to be too dim and please ignore any off-looking colours:
[Show spoiler]Please note that the UHD-BD shots have been converted from HDR to SDR using special techniques, which drastically compresses the dynamic range of the original image (the colour bit depth aka precision has been compressed as well). The UHD-BD shots are therefore not an accurate representation of the original HDR image - dynamic range, colours (tone and intensity) and contrast should be taken with a big pinch of salt and the main focus should be on comparing details. Typically, the image will appear too dark (which is by design when the caps are done at 200 nits; on its own they should be viewed with monitor brightness set to 200 nits), may lack a certain "pop" and may at times also appear "boosted" when compared to the BD shots. The SDR conversion should still give you a good idea of the actual image of the UHD-BD though and one should also be able to at least catch a glimpse of the increased dynamic range. The BD shots have been upscaled for comparison purposes, but other than that should be accurate. You might also want to check out this post of mine (incl. the further link there) where I tried to show/explain this:

Not only with #2. But as I (implicitely) said, with digitally shot stuff, which I assume here, I always reverse judgement.

I also think you're just getting the pure digital source garbage in all its "glory" here. Not that I did any extensive research at all, but didn't find how this was shot (which camera I mean) (checked the end credits for ex, which didn't state anything).

They Live (StudioCanal vs Shout)

Now that I have both, I compared the SC and the Shout a little bit and here's some thoughts. For one thing, I won't reserve judgement anymore and am rather convinced that the Shout has a colour space conversion error and is therefore wrong: Lack of proper reds which turn into orange and a general lack of bigger colour nuance, i.e. the Shout sometimes looks dull and less colourful (and not as in the SC looks oversaturated). Other than that, I have no idea what's going on with the coloured titles on the SC and I very much prefer the Shout with the scene starting at #25.

More comments below. Consider me totally unbiased. I think I'll watch both. Shout clearly has the better compression.

SC | Shout [both: UHD-BD (madVR/SDR/200 nits)]

1. coloured titles on the SC

2. still different

3. SC title looks off here, but the red wagon train looks right to me

4. coloured title

5. coloured title

6. and coloured title again

7. example for red vs. organge stoplights

8. IMO properly red helmet on the SC

9. organgy police sirens

10.

11. plus stoplights again

12. somewhat dull red police lights on the Shout during this whole scene (next 4)

13.

14. markedly worse compression on the SC (with HDR10 anyway)

15. markedly too dull on the Shout IMO

16. Golf magazine title is supposed to be red and too orangy on the Shout AFAICT (I know that film doesn't necessarily mirror reality)

17. this here is basically Arrival Sony vs Paramount reversed IMO (as in orange is wrong here)

18. example for organge instead of red traffic signs

19. organge police siren again

20. flag is still red on the Shout, but I still think the SC got it right

21. I think she actually has sunburn, which is kinda gone on the Shout

22. and so does he

23.

24.

25. now this scene is interesting and I prefer the Shout; I prefer the colour of the lights and it's interesting that with the caps starting with #26 the Shout is much brighter* and the SC somewhat clipped with the lights (keep in mind that I don't know what the DV is doing for the SC here)

26. no additional caps for the SC required for any of the caps, since SC stays well below 200 nits here (#3 Shout 620 nits)

27. this one's for the properly red "exit", which, other than the colour, looks better on the Shout though

28. (#3 Shout 840 nits)

29. (#3 Shout 973 nits)

* There's a certain irony hidden here re. the SC supposedly being "boosted".

Wow lol. That Total Recall release might have the worst macroblocking I've ever seen.. the difference between the two is unreal.

It still works, if you ignore the expired ssl certificate (expired 23/03/2021). Which I won't recommend anyone to do though.

They are having issues maintaining this stuff since COVID AFAICT... And yeah, totally sucks. But I always consider those, complaining about stuff that comes for free, to be fools, so there's that.

How do I get my screenshots' colors to look more as they appear on my TV. I see no screenshot color options in madVR. Even my monitor's picture looks different.

Photo of my Sony 900e:

Photo of my Asus MX27AQ:

Screenshot:

The camera does add a bit of reddish yellow, but it doesn't look that different when I look at the monitor or TV directly.

Apples to oranges. You have to stick with the same display when you're doing comparisons. It's one of the reasons I bought the monitor that I did. I have noticed that shots on my TV are very close to my monitor as well, but both of mine are calibrated. They're also a couple feet from each other.

I'm not really interested in making my monitor and TV's colors match, because it's impossible. The UI just doesn't have the needed settings. Pretend the second photo isn't there. Why does the first photo, of the Sony, have such a different color temperature from the screenshot? It's not just the camera. Like I said, I can see the difference without a photo.

One of the displays not being calibrated properly would be my guess.
