Leave No Trace (2018)
USA (Universal) vs International (Sony) https://slow.pics/c/uUJtFb9F Does anyone know why Universal cropped the entire movie? (Sony screenshots are heavily compressed, so ignore the difference in picture quality) Last edited by somebulls; 06-09-2024 at 02:33 AM. |

Enchanted (2007) (BD vs Disney+ 4K)
https://slow.pics/c/CAcHATEP I don't know why but Disney cropped 4K a little bit. I think the old bluray still looks great. ![]() Last edited by somebulls; 06-09-2024 at 12:55 PM. |

Zodiac being a top 5 movie for me, I was very excited to check this 4K stream out. And I must admit, despite it being a cheap conversion and it having less noise (and some issues with gradations probably owing to bitrate), I'd pick this HDR conversion in a heartbeat. It added so much to the first murder in the car - where he's sitting there in the actual dark rather than a gray, and it massively improved the impact of the flashlight. With the taxi murder, he slips into the night, actually changing the feel of the scene. That's what HDR is supposed to do, even when cheaply (though not poorly) implemented. The digital noise in the Bluray also consisted of distracting patterns in the dark scenes, so the extra life of the disc isn't always an improvement. I'd rather have this on disc of course, and preferrably done properly, but I'd honestly take this stream over the Bluray. |

Hello there...
Is there a place, reliable, which I can check Once Upon a Time in The West screens comparables? |

What I've done before is use ffmpeg to grab raw, uncompressed PNGs at a fixed interval throughout the entire video file. It works great at getting the raw 10-bit PQ screencap, and it also gets the timing exact if you have a 4K and 1080p file that have the exact same runtime, like for a 4K+Bluray combo pack where the Bluray is remastered. But if you're trying to pick specific moments to capture, then it may be a bit harder, since the fixed interval tends to pick random moments which may or may not be blurry motion frames

ffmpeg has an easy way to grab raw 10-bit PQ pngs without processing or tonemapping (so you can apply your own tonemapping), but I don't know yet how to grab a series of exact timeframes, I usually just do fixed time interval grabs

They just put it on digital! I'm sure it'll (unfortunately) get a Presents release or something. I can see them doing each Naked Gun / Airplane individually (they already have 4Ks on digital) and then doing a pack for them like they did for Beverly Hills Cop.

I hope they end up coming out ASAP. I want them all. We really were owed some proper remasters of these.

The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
BD vs Disney+ 4K https://slow.pics/c/Od9dMkgl Do you think it's cropped? Framing is slightly different. Last edited by somebulls; 07-03-2024 at 11:09 PM. |

Is there a table of contents in this thread? So that we can know all the films that were posted here?

I have what may well be a stupid question, but I've asked a lifetime of those...
Do you all have your computer screens professionally calibrated? Otherwise how do you accurately judge screenshots? I have both of my TVs calibrated every few years, but for my computer screen I'd doing it myself using Apple's slightly odd built in process, and then tweaking it to taste. So I have no idea if it's very accurate. Which, in turn, makes me wonder - every time I'm looking at screenshots for density, contrast, color, etc - how to trust that what I'm responding to is really what's on the disc. I'm curious how others approach this. Thanks! |

Point Break (US vs. UK)
In HDR10 the UK consistently wins despite the lower bitrate. Can't serve FEL DV caps for the Shout (UK is MEL) nor take a look at it in DV. Mind you that I think the Shout also/still looks fine in HDR10, but the UK clearly bests it despite the way lower bitrate. https://slow.pics/c/tRqKe0jT |

Malcolm X (US vs. UK)
Another consistent win for Icon, this time mostly re. the typical Criterion filtering. If you look at all of them, you'll see that it's often in-your-face and it really looks noticably crisper in motion. I don't hate Criterion releases and they are always good enough, but they are bested by another release on a regular basis. ![]() With the Icon I noticed a blocky top more than once (with the caps mind you!), which I notice often with 4K encodes (even with FiM at least once IIRC). Anyway, I'd get the Icon. Same as with Shout's Point Break above: The Criterion is the HDR10 layer only. https://slow.pics/c/yxt0idiw I also noticed a compression oddity with the Icon with the first frame of this shot (I used the next one in the comparison above on purpose), which I didn't want to hide. Weird. https://slow.pics/c/7uXBaUSO |
