BL = Base Layer (the mandatory backwards compatible 10 bit HDR10 stream for Dolby Vision encodings)

BL+FEL = Base Layer + Full Enhancement Layer (with FEL dual layer encodings, you get 12 bit data)

BL is Base Layer which is just the HDR10 layer. BL+FEL is the Base Layer plus the Full Enhancement Layer. FEL is the Dolby Vision layer.

Gotta hand it to Kino, their old AH did a very nice encode there and obviously to FiM for presenting two cuts seamlessly on the same disc + bonus while using new encoding techniques to make this possible.

Not so much new techniques as branching has been around for decades, but a refinement to those techniques to make it as fool-proof as possible and ensure that nothing "gets lost in the shuffle", as David put it.

lol at all that buried crap on the Kino encode of Touch of Evil, their authoring houses really are a special kind of shit. And I'm soooo not surprised that Capelight's B&W authoring was also affected.

Did I miss something egregious re. the Kino encode? I looked at five random caps on my phone and they looked good to me. I was surprised tbh but maybe I gave them too quick a credit for nothing

I have the Eureka and it’s wonderful.

The Indicator BD holds up really well as nicwood mentioned. The Sony seems to have black crush, unfortunately.

The FiM-encoded BD holds up so well that it’s even slightly better in some shots (cap 12) than the UHD, which I must say is a bit disappointing as this is a Sony encode and they know what they’re doing. I don’t think they’re living under a rock over there, so I assume they were/are aware of what Powerhouse/Indicator released and that a native 4K presentation should ideally be one step ahead encoding-wise and avoid stuff like black crush which the BD doesn’t have. Don’t get me wrong, the Sony still looks nice in caps and it’ll probably be a wonderful experience watching this with HDR in a dark room but some potential’s been left untouched and this should’ve been as definitive as other Sony encodes.

Has there been a BDinfo posted yet? (Kobe, those would be handy whenever you post these comparisons, thanks!) Wonder if Body Double is one of Sony's cheaper MOD-style set-and-forget encodes, they're not terrible but not amazing either.

Piet posted BDInfo: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=198

Lady from Shanghai was a set-and-forget encode (menu looks a bit different and Sony intro can't be skipped) but turned out beautifully.
