Default The most historically accurate film

I use the word "most" because no film will ever be 100% accurate unless it is stock footage of the actual event taking place. Having said that what movie do you think comes closest to real events in time or at least the recorded accounts. For instance Passion of the Christ may not be a complete retelling of an historical figure but it does stay true to the source material.

I believe one good example is the movie Patton. Alot of the scenes are from eyewitness accounts of the battles and Pattons own war diary. I think war movies in general have a pretty good insight into the accounts of warfare. Downfall was another film that was lifted straight from the source material, a book written by Traudl Junge Hitlers secretary.

For me, the three films that most seem like an actual window into the history they depict (in other words, they seem like they're actually from the times they depict, rather than being a modern recreation of them) are THE NAME OF THE ROSE, MUNICH and BARRY LYNDON.

Patton is the best answer for most historically accurate. I think another good movie that are also pretty accurate would be: the greatest raid.

Not so perfect but really good:
Saints and soldiers
Defiance

But if I have to answer the question seriously, the only one that really comes to mind right now is "Tora! Tora! Tora!" I seem to remember it being spot-on.

I concur with "The Passion," regardless of what others may think. The original "Ten Commandments" also seems to be a good adaptation of the source material. We may never know if either one is historically accurate or not.

I think "Gladiator" captured Roman civilization perfectly, but it did take some liberties with the characters, politics, and events. Same might be said for "Kingdom of Heaven" and "Braveheart," though both are terribly inaccurate concerning history.

"Waltz with Bashir" should be mostly accurate, since it recounts the director's own story and experience. It's just animated. Same might be said of "Persepolis," but I don't know for sure.

Recently saw "Army of Shadows," and it seems like it'd be an accurate portrayal of the French Resistance during WWII.

That's all I can think of right now.

Sure beats the heck out of "The 300 Spartans." That old flick felt way too surgar-coated to be accurate.

Monty Python's Life Of Brian is probably pretty accurate to what ACTUALLY happened that led to... well... I'm just gonna stop there for fear of bannishiment.

SPACEBALLS!!!

O.K. Seriously I've read that most of Tombstone (Kurt Rusell, Val Kilmer) is very accurate as far as certain characters, events, and conversation goes.

Yup, 300 wasn't historically accurate, but it was a great movie I look at 300 as the mythological version of Thermopylae

Though it is not a movie, Rome was pretty accurate (at least first season, second season took some more liberties due to a compressed timeline).

Then there is 2001: ASO. Because we all know that what happened in 2001: ASO really happened in 2001

in 300's defense, there are supposedly historical records in which it says the following lines were actually said.

“our arrows will blot out the sun”

“then we’ll fight in the shade”

TROY!
My history teacher would go on and on about this movie. The little we know of those events comes from the epic Homer poem the Illiad. WHile taken in the Greek mythology context it doesn't offer much in the way of real life events. The movie attempts to create an atmosphere of real history not a clash of the gods myth. The fighting also is the most accurate Greek swordplay you will ever find in a film. While it may not be entirely true I would be hard pressed to find another movie that comes as close.

You guys are forgetting Anchorman!

The only thing that was changed in that film were the People, Places and Events
