Yeah, decent movie. As a child though, I was Into the late, great Edward Woodward so the new version pales in comparison. I will give it a 6/10

Purchase warning to any members of the 4K Viz owners group….please be advised that I don't think the 4K P series TV will play the Timescapes 4k UHD USB stick (average bitrate of 60 Mbit/s apparently), as the material is h.264 encoded and the P’s no lik-ee h.264 via USB stick.

I expect, due to the cost, the one I'm getting with the Blu-ray will be H264 10 GB file size and 40Mbit bit rate, which should be fine...my tests so far have been successful for bitrates of up to 52 or so, the samples at 120MBit just stutter as the TVs processor can't decode it quick enough. Also it only plays h264 files with a resolution of 3840 x 2160, clips of 4096 it rejected. I'm expecting it to arrive tomorrow - no post in the UK on New Years Day.

Penton - any thoughts on bit rates for 4K Blu-rays? The players are going to have some good hardware in...

When designing as robust an extended Blu-ray spec as possible for long-term future needs…or, at least, in order to enable cutting-edge content providers interested in offering/releasing something wow-like special to consumers in terms of a next gen physical delivery format, the consideration becomes how much bandwidth will be needed not only to show premium performance of increased (4K) spatial resolution (let’s say 20+ Mbps HEVC), but also higher fidelity with regards to other parameters, e.g. deeper sample bit depths, wider color gamut, better chroma subsampling, high dynamic range.

In terms of bitrate projections, what I can (generically) tell you is that technical investigators believe that about 55-100 Mbps HEVC will be required for 4:2:2 10bit/12 bit 2160 content up to 50/60p frame rate ….depending upon PQ expectations and content complexity.

Ouch, that's going to require a lot of space. Much more than a BD50 for your average feature.

How will that be a problem for 66GB and 100GB discs? Why people keep thinking 4K BD will be be delivered exclusively on 50GB discs is beyond me, and it's not like creating a 100GB platter is pie-in-the-sky stuff because BD-XL already uses a similar triple-layer design. And as Penton said, those numbers are taking into account 50/60fps content so 24fps material - i.e. the overwhelming majority of movies that have ever been made ever - will require the lower end of that bit rate projection. (Encoding efficiency will also improve over time, as we've seen with AVC.)

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying we won't see 50GB discs at all because they'll have some uses for shorter 4K 24fps features, as 90 minutes x 60Mb/s average video bit rate = 39GB, which leaves plenty of room for audio tracks and whatnot.

j/k on the pic ^, it’s an alteration I made of a photo from the sci-tech council.

Well that bitrate estimation is *parameter loaded*. Remember, the average cinematic feature is 24fps, so you can whittle down that Mbps projection range a little there. Also, if you home deliver 4:2:0 sampling instead of 4:2:2, you can further whittle it down a lot.

Yes to the above . I was modifying the AMPAS photo and typing up a response apparently while you were already posting to Peter. I’m beginning to think we have this Jenko-Zook (22 Jump Street) thing going on.

In case anyones interested in purchasing Timescapes 4K via the Blu-ray/USB pack available from amazon

Timescapes 4K
Supplied on 8GB USB drive formatted in exFat - I had to copy the file off, reformat to NTFS and copy it back again as my TV wont recognise exFat.
File is MP4, 6.17GB, resolution 3840 x 2160, length 00:46:22, encoded in h.265 hevc
Average bit rate 19 MBit/s
Note this is a different encode from the ones available to download directly from Timescapes.

Just watched it and it makes a wonderful demo for your 4K TV. Some of the shots are stunning

Makes a good illustrative point to those malcontents dismissive of solely increased (4K) spatial resolution.

P.S.
Though for perspective, keeping in mind that an inherent characteristic of physical media has always been to offer premium performance, as opposed to just a respectable audio video experience.

ACES 1.0 was officially released a few days ago and they also released the technical documents for it. ACES 1.0 has two color spaces which are AP0 and AP1. The AP0 color space covers the entire visible spectrum and is designed for long term storage while the AP1 color space is slightly bigger than the Rec. 2020 color space and is designed for CGI, color grading, and viewing. ACES 1.0 is an impressive standard and hopefully more movies will start to use it now that it is officially completed.

Not only does ACES enable future expansion of the creative palette but also it facilitates the creation of the Rec. 709 master by making it even more of an automated technical process by lessening the time needed for the creative involvement (i.e. the trim pass….https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...im#post9623181 )

Richard , are you keeping up with the JCT-VC goings on? For next month, is there a call for evidence regarding WCG and HDR with any specific set goal(s) in mind?
