I don't know why people are so obsessed with Amazon and Best Buy when not only does HHGregg have them on hand, they are $40 cheaper than Amazon/Best Buy because when you make an account on hhgregg they e-mail you a 10% off discount code you can use on your order. And they have free shipping.
I got my player from them a week ago, three days after ordering it, and I paid $375 (after tax). |

After many hours trying to get output from this player looking just right, I had a breakthrough last night and wanted to share, in the event it may help other users enjoy a better picture.
I purchased the LG 60UF8500 last year. While I had attempted to calibrate it at the time, the Samsung UBD-K8500 gave me the opportunity to reassess my settings. I used the Disney WOW Blu-ray for the calibration. As it turns out, I basically used the APS picture mode default with a few minor tweaks. This is the setting I use when playing back DVD and Blu-ray: HDMI ULTRA HD Deep Color: On APS (User)
Advanced Controls
Picture Options
Since my TV is not HDR, UHD Blu-rays looked dark. After reading some of the posts on here, I learned that the HDR signal to the TV basically pushes the contrast to 100 (which mine was already set at) and increases the Brightness by 20. So, I used the Cinema picture mode on my TV to reflect these changes. I copied all of the setting from above with the following changes: Cinema (User)
This is the picture mode for watching UHD Blu-rays. I also tried various settings on the Samsung UHD-K8500 player to try to improve my perception of the overall picture. Here is what I decided on: Picture
Picture Mode - User
Thus far, a quick scan of the 18 UHD Blu-rays that I have nearly all look outstanding (Expendables 3 and Ender's Game being the mild disappointments). I just need to toggle between picture modes on my TV depending on the type of disc I am playing. The key scene that helped calibrate my settings is at the 30:23 mark in San Andreas. In the restaurant at the top of the hotel, when the window is behind the two ladies sitting at the table, you should be able to see an airplane in the sky. Hope this has been helpful. |

Oh not done yet. lol
I always believe I can find a better image & since my set is a non-HDR I'm using the player's assets now. Same set-up as I posted, Enhanced RGB, but am now tweaking the player's user settings instead of "Standard" picture mode. So far I've come up with one that makes Color look as accurate as "Movie" & Contrast that is better than "Standard" Still field testing. Been doing so for the past 5 hours now & I believe I've found one better then both of those in "User" Dynamic is just plain overkill. IMO. Using The Martian as prime experiment. Set-up. Feel free to try these, lemme know what ya think? Depending on your tv's calibration, you may find these not suitable. HDMI Color Format - RGB (Enhanced) HDMI Deep Color - Auto Player Picture settings - User Sharpness - (0) Noise Reduction - (0) Contrast - (+3) Brightness - (-1) Color - (-1) Tint - G10/R10 I know these bring out the best detail with the least amount of noise in the picture & Color is more accurate then both Dynamic & Standard using The Martian Next up is Exodus with these settings. I'll let ya know if these "changes for the better" apply to that film later or not. ![]() |

Looking at Exodus,
Yes though image is slightly darker & resolution decrease is noticeable. Still the player does an excellent job upscaling. Much better then my Sony. Makes me appreciate Exodus in 4K a lot more. Watched my 5th UHD being Hitman: Agent 47 yesterday & still Exodus looks like the go-to reference title to showcase this format. Absolutely stunning, HDR or no HDR. ![]() |

Im buying more and more imports and am looking to purchase a region free player anybody have any suggestions on really good ones?.. And also just curious as to what actually causes a blu ray player not to be able to read or play other region discs is their a block on the disc itself or does the blu ray player operate differently in how the disc is read or spun in the player?

My UBD-K8500 was delivered on Tuesday, unfortunately I was out of town until today. Finally was able to unpack and set up. I have only watched Chappie so far, but I'm very happy with the picture quality so far. My main point of this post is to say thank you for all of the posters in this thread that have posted such high quality helpful tips. They certainly help. Now I'm off to watch some more movies!

Edit: played around a little more, 444 color -2 or 3 contrast, - 1 or 2 brightness, -1 color and g9/r11 give me best results where blown out hilights are concerned (the window in Kingsman, the window in the restaurant before the earthquake in San Andreas and the water flowing in Mad Max all had terribly clipped hilights in enhanced unless the contrast was taken down to -5 or -6) Have to test shadows with these settings later. Haven't had time to check this morning. I had settings at Rgb enhanced, -5 contrast, +1 brightness until earlier. With those settings the whites were ok but I noticed a few crushed looking scenes in The Last Witch Hunter so later I'll give that a second look with my new settings. Someone mentioned the intro to the Xmen movie, I'll give that another look too.
