The test pattern on the Spears & Munsil disc starts to show halos as soon as the setting is higher than 0. At a setting of 20 it is already very obvious. And settings like that produce are artificial looking picture. I don't like that. |

Yesterday the UBD-K8500 that I ordered in January finally arrived.
I wasn't sure about the curved design but the player looks nice. The remote is a little too small but not as bad as I thought. I connected the player to my non HDR Samsung TV (HU6900). Setup and update (1003). First I checked the Blu-ray playback with the Spears and Munsil disc. I set the player to RGB standard because with RGB enhanced bright whites are clipped. Test patterns like Wedges and Jaggies were OK but not as good as on my Panasonic BDT120 (same chipset as the BDT500). Racecar testpattern was very stable. Then I played my only UHD disc: The martian. The SDR playback was in terms of brightness, color, contrast close to the Blu-ray, maybe a little darker. Overall the disc had a few good looking scenes but in many scenes the difference to the Blu-ray wasn't that huge. I also have the Sasmung UHD pack HDD and the 4k mastered movies look better. I hope discs based on real 4k masters will be better. There where also 2 or 3 scenes with visible compression artefacts. Just to test it I also tried to connect the player to a non HDCP 2.2 capable HDMI input and got no picture at all. Strange. I thought the player would scale down to 1080p. |

I ended up ordering the player from HH Gregg when it came back in stock. It looks like it's scheduled to be delivered tomorrow. Does anyone know if a signature is required? If so, I'm screwed and that means I'll have to wait until Monday to get the player. I'd really like to hook it up this weekend and try it out.

I hope the Mods will let me keep this in this forum as it directly pertains to the K8500 although the question being ask is regarding HDMI setting on my Sharp LC-60UE30 4K TV (Non HDR)
All inputs on this tv have a setting for :Full 4:4:4 or Limited 4:2:0. I have gotten mixed opinions on what it should be set at when used with the K8500. Sharp has even given mixed answers. I believe the display is a 10-bit panel with WCG but no HDR. Which setting should be used on the TV and the K8500? From the Sharp manual: Set to "Full" when an HDMI 4K60P 4:4:4 device is connected, and set to "Limited" when an HDMI 4:2:0 device is connected. Thanks guys |

Regarding sharpness, its been noted by multiple "professionals", that hte tizen system on the samsung tvs seems to work a little strangely. I think it was Steve Withers of AVforums that mentioned being able to turn up the sharpness on the samsung tvs without causing artifacting, and also a very well known Calibrator in the USA named Chad B.
From Chads Review of the JS9500 (which i own): "Although the technically correct sharpness setting is around 0, I found that a setting of 10-20 eliminated a slightly soft look to cable content without causing much edge enhancement." https://clevelandplasma.com/store/20...ung_un65js9500 I find samsung to have a little bit of a soft look compared to sony, so yes putting sharpness up a little bit does help ![]() |

I have my K8500 running through and Hdfury Integral to my Denon and then to my LG 4K TV (non HDR, but the hdmi port 3 is 10 bit, hence my needing the Integral).
All is working well and the picture looks fabulous. I do have one question - The TV itself (when I click info) while a UHD disc is playing indicates that my audio is PCM (which is correct) and my video is 1080p (which should not be correct). If the K8500, Denon, and TV are all 4K --- why would it indicate I am getting 1080p? Does it look like I am missing something in the process? Thank you so much for the guidance and help. |

Many 2014/2015 TV models without HDR support some kind of 10bit color on some inputs but most of them don't support 10bit on the HDCP 2.2 capable input because the HDCP uses up too much bandwith. Also the framerate is limited to 24, 25 or 30 fps. 50 or 60 fps is only supported on the non HDCP 2.2 inputs...

I have the MARTIAN in 4k..when I first played it was alittle dark then somebody on here told me to go to the tools setting on the Samsung Blu-Ray player to Dynamic mode and that took care of that problem...picture was great..try that

That's what did the trick for me too. In Standard mode the UHD looks darker than the BD. But setting to Dynamic it makes the overall brightness level on par with the BD watched in Standard mode. Don't know if it's some quirk in the player or if UHD is meant to be played in Dynamic mode.
