Well, as I indicated (and Geoff D acknowledged), I'm well aware of the distinction. The question is whether the available range is being utilized in the mastering of content not graded for "HDR". IMO, it's quite a shame if it isn't.

Sure, there isn't enough dynamic range or a wide enough colour space on current 8-bit 709 grades to exactly emulate the theatrical SDR finish (that's why they call it a "trim pass", I guess). BUT with 10-bit P3 seemingly being the default digital finish then the 10-bit 2020 'container' (which will hold P3) of UHD Blu should do well at getting closer to that final theatrical grade without too many compromises, and that's separate from any such HDR intervention.

That would be my presumption, yes, that a 10-bit P3 grade is the minimum starting point for UHD Blu simply because that's where movies have been at for a while, although it's worth noting that the movies on Sony's current 4K download service are 8-bit 709 AFAIK.

actually I think DCI specs say 12-bit color for 2D playback, if I remember correctly...

We have an AVS user that is a reviewer/calibrater that got his hands on a preproduction ubd-k8500 model along with uhd discs.
Unfortunately he does not have a 4k tv. But he's able to confirm that his 1080p tv does work with the 4k discs. He says improvements from using the better quality 4k discs is very apparent many times throughout the uhd discs he's watching. He was also able to confirm atmos/dtsX still comes through on those uhd discs on his 1080p tv. |

Here's the deal; I bought a Samsung 65JU7100 this past December for a great price (we found an open box return on the floor for $1597). I went from a Samsung 50 inch 1080p Plasma to this 65 inch 4k TV. So far, I've been incredibly impressed with the up scaled blu ray movies I've been watching on this display.
I watched "The Martian" trailer on a blu ray disc of a different movie and it looked spectacular. Being just the trailer I was very excited ( I have not seen The Martian full movie yet). I was excited to try out a Samsung 4K player so I pre-ordered it along with the actual Martian movie on 4k. I know that I will just have to judge it for myself when I actually can watch it, but with everything I'm reading online about HDR and its benefits along with added resolution I'm wondering if I can tell even before seeing it myself if it will be worth it. The JU7100 I have DOES NOT support HDR as far as I read so my question I ask everyone is WILL I NOTICE a greater improvement over what I've seen with regular blu ray's upconverted? Is HDR THAT instrumental for your display in order to enjoy the full benefits? Various people seem to have different opinions on this. I should also mention that I've also been impressed with 4k video through You Tube; this is streaming and yet my jaw managed to drop but of course, its a matter of what source was used to capture the content so I digress. Good news is if I'm not convinced once I get the player and movie I can just return the player and keep the movie (it has a regular blu ray included) so in the end I'll be covered without monetary loss. Like I said, with how impressed I am already with regular movies on this display I'm initially skeptical about how much better 4K movies will look like. |
