Never mind about the firmware 1002 is the most up to date stuff it looks like. They were talking about some Samsung TV. Nothing like being off topic.

There's also a lot of tutorials on AVforums, they're worth checking out to see how far you want to get into it!

I'm sure we'll see a UHD BD Calibration disc on the market, so it's worth keeping an eye out for one.
Thanks! Yes I was wondering if those would be worth getting for a 4K UHD device as they both say they're for HDTV. Would it be better to just wait for a UHD calibration disc? Sorry to be so clueless about this!

If you can shop at Best Buy the Disney disc isn't that expensive. They should be fine for a stop gap until they release a 4K version, but and I'm sure someone else could confirm this, they should be okay for brightness and contrast settings? even if the 4K calibration disc does have extra features you may need extra equipment to fine-tune your colour settings (there's tinted glasses, light and colour meters used for calibration). So you may decide on getting a professional in to get the most out of your equipment.

What model was your TV?

It would only work for SDR and not on an OLED that well

Once HDR kicks in does the TV change the brightness and contrast settings? or just the cell light?

Backlight and Contrast, at least on my JS8500, get maxed out. And this is unchangeable, I believe.

Brightness remains the same.

Alright guys, I've been switching back and forth between the 1080p Bluray of The Martian and the 4KUHD of The Martian now for some time.

Although to wit, since my TV is 4K, the 1080p is upscaled. Full disclaimer - it's a 65JS8500.

Items on the A/V Chain

Sammy K8500, set to 2160p, dual HDMI to Denon X4000 receiver, TV

Sony S790, set to 1080p, HDMI to receiver, Denon X4000 receiver to TV.

No issues to report re: bitstreaming or getting Audio. Currently using the 5th HDMI input for my K8500 on the Denon. No noticeable audio lag despite the HDMI split.

First test setup: UHD HDMI Color OFF on TV, Deep Color OFF on player, all other options on player as normal. Picture on USER on K8500.

- Massive banding and black crush on The Martian, especially noticeable in the beginning scenes of the planet. The backlight being at 20 or so introduces a bit of clouding (edge lit panel, what can I do) on my TV. Noticeable only when my bias lighting is off. The Fox intro and the mountain ranges suffer the most from black crush.

Pretty much unwatchable.

I made the following changes:

UHD HDMI Color ON for the TV, on source HDMI 4.

- Banding immediately disappeared, black crush alleviated. Still a bit though.

Gamma on TV set to +1

- Black crush greatly alleviated. More detail emerges.

User Settings on Player edited to 0 across the board, but -2 on Brightness

- Greatly resolved clouding issue on TV.

This is where I'm at so far.

Also - my seating distance is at 7'-0" exactly from a 65" screen. The differences in resolution between the Bluray and UHD - especially in the mountain ranges shown in the beginning of the film, are clearly identifiable. The HDR also produces far more vivid color than the blu-ray.

"Accuracy" of the color notwithstanding, I didnt see this movie in the theaters.

Gonna keep at it for another hour or so, then start with Kingsman to keep testing.

I found an order in the system for the Sony titles today with the delivery date of 2/25. Still nothing for Lionsgate or WB but I would guess they are coming around the same time if they want everything out for the 2/28 ad. Hopefully I won't have to get them to fix the street date again this time.

Kingsman is the first title to sell out at my store. Of course we only got 5 of it versus 12 of The Martian (7 sold so far).

That would be cool if the Sony titles were available a week from tomorrow. I definitely wanna see some genuine 4K titles.

Same here, I'm fighting my internal battle as to whether or not I should rebuy movies I've already seen on BD just to get them in ACTUAL 4K.

Like Spiderman2. I love that one. I've seen it like, 3 times in a year. But do I >REALLY< want the UHD?

I'm hoping they have the Sony titles on sale the first week (every dollar helps)

Amazing Spider-Man 2 sucked. But I'll still pick up the UHD. I'm a completist and it's gonna look terrific in 4K HDR.

You're nuts. It was awesome.

But anyway, that bickering is pointless and belongs in the cesspool known as the Movies subsection.

It is going to look awesome. I might be unable to resist.

Agreed, ^ I watched Spider Man 2 from Sony's 4K media server on our VW665ES 4K Sony projector store demo theater and loved it. Excellent video quality.
