Of course some people buy things because they're fashionable. You know what they don't do? Get together with a couple-hundred-million of their friends and all buy something that costs between $500 and $2,500 because it's fashionable and then proceed to rate it incredibly highly in customer satisfaction despite their not liking it because it's fashionable and then proceed to buy another one that they don't need and also don't like because it's fashionable.

Next time you question my responses, look at the claims I'm responding to. I'm sure there are people who've bought an iPad or an iPhone only because they heard they were "cool". There aren't 200 million of them. And they don't line up to buy more of them after they end up not liking them. And they don't report their stunningly high customer satisfaction after they end up not liking them.
why not, isn't that the definition of fashionable? If no one wants something because it is not fashionable (cool....) then no one has it, something needs to be popular to be fashionable, and it does not need to offer anything except for a status symbol. Right, the cute girl waiting 1/2 hour in line in front of a popular club in a miniskirt at -35 degrees with wind chill is not wearing that skirt because it s functional but because she believes it makes her hotter. Are you telling me the millions that wore powder blue wide3 collar suits in the 70's where doing it because it was functional and now no one will be caught dead in such a suit because the function of clothes have changed. How about the big hair styles of the 80's?

As for waiting in line to buy one on day one or paying several times the retail price because the person could not wait in line on day one and he might need to wait a few weeks more to get it at retail instead of e-bay. How does that not prove exactly that it is about a status symbol (fashionable, cool....) it is not about the product but about being able to say "I had it first" no matter how good it is (after all how can someone know if something they have not ever seen or used is actually any good?)

As for not buying more of them if they don't like them, you are missing the point, the girl in the miniskirt literally freezing her a$$ in line does not give a crap if her skirt does not fulfill the primary goal of clothing and keeping her warm and comfortable, it is all about being cool and getting attention by being fashionable. So yes, if something is "cool" and a status symbol it does not matter how good (or not) it is because that is not the primary goal.

Now don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Apple and I don't know how many are buying their different products just because they are "cool", but nothing you say makes sense as a counter point to what he said.

agree, I never said otherwise nor meant to imply otherwise, I also did not see Peter say that everyone that bought one did so just because it is cool.

huh? if that was true DVD sales could have been in the trillions$ and there might have never been any rental places. The vast majority of people are not collectors, they are rentals.

You always come back to this like it's all you've got, which is quite telling in itself.
As I've replied to you before about this:
You'll never know whether or not I am just a 'keyboard warrior', but I definitely know you're a Concern Troll.

Do you even read what people are reponding to before posting directly to them? If you did it would probably save a lot of confusion on your part.

It's by no means flattery, but it isn't necessarily a personal attack. The thing is, when you start off the brouhaha with a dog turd visual-equation, being labelled a troll in return doesn't seem terribly out of bounds. If you're gonna play with poop, you might catch a bit of splatter. *AHEM*

By refuting my refutation of Peter, you are, in effect, agreeing with Peter's assertion.
first, I don't remember Peter saying "Everyone feels that way."
second Truewitt said you were incorrect in replying to me and not Peter and I started off “ No offence, but you are the one trying too hard. Maybe Peter is wrong, but...” so agreement with Peter ended a long time ago and at best (but even that would not really hold) you can say it means he agrees with me. And even though I think you are right (he agrees with me) there might always be more than two sides. Like the old joke with the three blind man
in case it is not obvious to some
[Show spoiler] three blind man touch an object, the first one goes “it is big round rough and I can’t move it, it is a tree” the second blind man touches it and says “no you are wrong, it is small pliable and strong, it is a fireman’s hose”, the third one touches it and sais “you are wrong, it is way too small to be a hose and it is not really pliable but there are bristles at the end and it is some kind of brush”, obviously in the end they are all wrong and it was an elephant

Doc, I think you’ve just outdone Anthony with that comment. I do believe that in another life perhaps a lot of you guys would have given shivers to fellow trial lawyers, if they had to face ya’ll.
dang, I lost my crown, I have to try harder.

Honestly even though my BIL is a lawyer, and he is a great guy and I have some friends that are lawyers, I could never be one. I prefer logic to rhetoric. Logic is about getting to the truth (if there is one) while rhetoric is all about persuading people if it is true or not.

Furthermore, I probably shouldn't speak for Rick, but I'd term his labeling you a "concern troll" an impersonal attack. I think he'd apply that label to anyone making posts similar to yours, without discrimination.
actually I think he uses it on any one for any reason when he does not have, what he considers, an intelligent response to make.

And yet you were perfectly willing to disclaim my direct response to that statement.

For the record, he not only said it, but I then rephrased it into my own words and asked him to verify that I understood what he was saying, which he then also did.

Read first. Understand second. Refute third.

Rick and Anthony,

The frog (a.k.a. Jim Taylor – http://dvddemystified.com/jim/jhtaylor.htm ) spoke at the Tech Retreat about UltraViolet. The evil twin in me was actually thinking about you two fellows while he was giving DECE’s UltraViolet status report.

If only you two guys had been there......
the funny thing is it had very little to do with UV directly and I have no issues with it. I just can't stand it when people are purposely trying to mislead others and that is no matter on what subject. Look at what has happened in your thread with Deci. I don't care if he is right and Apple makes the best stuff or if Peter is right and Apple is the most evil company in the world and people are dumb to buy their products. But you can't say that it is impossible that tens of millions are buying stuff just because it is cool. Because if something is cool there will most likely be tens of millions that buy it just because it is cool.

You see those shoe riots recently? Want to pretend those are the best shoes? Or perhaps it's a STATUS SYMBOL. Same thing with the iPhone/iPad.
There is nothing in it about everyone, actually before you got totally blinded by your fanboyism and trying to make a point neither you were talking about everyone but only tens of millions.

Honestly, Anthony I didn’t read the UV thread closely to pick up on the nuances. All I noticed was that you and Rick were motivated posters on the subject. Not following though on “look what happened in my thread with Deci”, perhaps you should PM.

I’m watching England ‘friendly’ soccer now that I’m settled in for the evening so ya’ll behave yourselves.

P.S.
And no wise soccer retort from PeterTHX to the above, something to the effect, ‘be prepared to fall asleep after 15 min.”

I took a day off today, so I’m well rested and alert.

You know it's bad when a soccer fan tells people to behave themselves.

You can absolutely say that it's impossible that tens of millions are buying very expensive stuff (and rating their satisfaction with it off the charts) just because it is cool, even though none of them actually like it, which is what was actually being said.

There's no "fanboyism" involved. Tens of milllions is effectively everyone because it's ludicrous to imagine that tens of millions of people are buying these products repeatedly without actually liking them. It doesn't matter if it's every single individual or just 90% of them- there may be a few crazy edge-cases out there, but you don't have success like Apple's with the majority of your customers not actually liking the product. Use your common sense.

I was saying "everyone" as in the saying: "everyone is doing it"....my God man, you are way too literal and you miss context 100% of the time.
This is a mirror image of the UV thread.
If someone says "the sky is blue" do you immediately jump in the conversation and start discussing all the shades of blue...and God forbid shades of gray that the sky could actually be.
For one that claims the pursuit of logic, you really don't display a lot of it at times!
