I listened to a tweet (turning on the audio) on social media a day afterwards (3-24-2019) from a couple on their way to the airport commenting about the car and the intermittent bridge closure – https://twitter.com/search?q=%23topgun2&src=typd

Well, the KIA Optima certainly isn’t any high horsepower Audi, but it was a nice enough car to fit the intended role for the scene
I've watched few minutes of that video yesterday.

That's a nice Tweeter page. ...Friendly, pilote polite.

I think the 125 million figure is highly misleading. I have several friends all who bought TVs recently. I found out that they had HDR on their TVs - they had never heard of it. "This will knock your socks off!" I proudly promised, and showed them some demos.

Oh, what a let-down. On a display with peak luminance of 300 nits, it's invisible. It's the equivalent of a "HD-Ready" display, but worse: one which is actually SD and not even 720p. So embarrassing. They could see my shock and there was no way to hide my disappointment, so then they knew they'd been conned.

For some manufacturers, their entire range is "HDR Ready" (and they should be forced to call them that, and they should NOT be allowed to call them "HDR") with only a few expensive models capable of >600 nits. But their sales figures imply that all those customers have ticked the HDR box.

I think the true figure of HDR-capable devices - which can actually get above 600 nits so that you can tell that it's HDR and it looks better than SDR - will be far, far lower.

"More help" than what? OLEDs benefit less from dynamic metadata than edge lit LCDs. Edge lit TVs are the ones that need dynamic metadata the most.
Tome mapping?
High nit content into sub 700 nit displays?

You're reading off the old script here. The one from 2016. The LG OLEDs have dramatically improved their tone mapping since 2016. Panasonic OLEDs have had great tone mapping all along. They hit over 700 peak nits, too.

Dynamic metadata will help edge lit, and even FALD displays, far more, if implemented correctly, because it improves their local dimming, and thus allows for a higher level of contrast. Kris Deering has written about this many times on this forum.

There's some HDR content that looks very good. Not sure what you're watching or what display you've got.

The more important question is when will Netflix start putting out good original shows outside of Narcos, now that El Chapo has finished and they've cancelled Daredevil. Because as of now, everything on their service other than Narcos is utter trash.

Mindhunter is the best show they've got and it's not even close.

Umbrella Academy and Sabrina didn't impress me at al, looked muted, drab and lifeless. On a sony 65 inch x900f.

Outside of hdr breaking bad on 4k looks good, looks like the standard blu ray discs which means I wont have to own them for like the 3rd time, unless it was those ralph Steadman art blu rays, those were sick

There's nothing that Mindhunter does better than Narcos, and it doesn't change the game as far as its own genre goes. Narcos doesn't either, but it has progressively gotten better with each season, which is really hard to do, while Mindhunter has all the makings of ending up like other Netflix originals that have failed hard after a bit of early success. It'll end up a complete disaster like House of Cards did after season 2.

When they say “devices”, are they counting things other than TV’s in there?
Things like UHDBD players and sticks that negotiate 4K HDR?

Sort of a rubbish number if they’re in there. No way to know if the actual viewing devices show an HDR picture.

I'm with you on House of Cards but it's too early to say that Mindhunter will fall flat on its face. It doesn't necessarily reinvent anything but it's executed remarkably well for what it is.

What I don’t understand is why you go into various threads and in effect, discourage people from buying the Alita disc. Discs are struggling enough against streaming. We should be promoting all discs, especially those that have a high probability of providing an enjoyable viewing experience to the customer.

Well, yeah, but you're doing the same thing as him in the opposite: spamming threads with Alita this and Alita that, if you want to champion "all" physical media then there's not just this film, last time I checked?

Penton seems to have shares in Top Gun 2 so it's no wonder he's plugging it as furiously as he is, but this obsession with Alita from some folks is a little creepy.
