All we know is that it is due at the end of this year and that it will have the following specifications: REC 2020, 10 bit colour, High Dynamic Range(HDR), High Frame Rate 60fps (HFR) chroma sub sampling is a bit up in the air at the minute it will either be 4:2:0, 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 it will more than likely be 4:2:0, it will use the HEVC video codec.

3D is also up in the air as the specification within HEVC despite being worked on and a draft existing, has still to be published. Any other features like Java have not been mention although something called SeeQVault which allows you to transfer content from one device to another has been mentioned.

Audio codecs that are likely to be used are Dolby ATMOS and DTS X both in speaker configurations anywhere up to 24.1.10, DTS X is still up in the air as they haven't given exact details of how to set it up it just seems to piggy back on existing systems.

If it's due at the end of the year it can't be too long until they start to make some announcements, licensing of Ultra HD Blu-ray is set to begin in the spring or summer of 2015, well were in spring now so an announcement could land any time.

To clarify... no Full UHD resolution 3D at this time. They still have provisions for 1080p 3D, but I believe it might still be compressed with 8 bit H.264. as if it were a hold over from regular Blu-ray specifications.

I would expect the audio technical details to remain pretty much the same as before with DTS Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel based support ... including extensions for DTS:X and Dolby Atmos like we have now.

It's possible that DTS will get their Master Audio Coreless compression codec added into the mix... perhaps as a container for a future channel-less, pure object + metadata audio track that more closely mirrors their MDA object language for cinemas rather than relying on backwards compatibility.

I didn't expect that high. There using Dolby vision, still along way from the 10,000 nits it can do.

That was part of it but there's a lot more to consider than just the availability of the codec.

Like the fact they premium-priced 3D Blu-ray (the primary source for 3D in the home) out of the consumer mainstream and it fizzled.

Now, the industry is gun shy about including 3D. Way to go Hollywood.

They do this with UHD Blu-ray and they should not be surprised if it never takes off.

The only reason I don't have 3D TV is because I slammed down £2999 on a 9G Pioneer Kuro 9050 the year before 3D TVs reached the market, after a few years as I was starting to come round to the idea of buying a new TV but all the talk of 4K started so I figured I would just wait until 4K took off and get one then. Further to this I had also just paid for the Kuro calibrating at around £250 and I didn't fancy getting the guy back a week later to calibrate a new TV, also, once my frustration had subsided I realised that there would only be two films I would buy that are in 3D, Texas Chainsaw 3D & My Bloody Valentine 3D respectively together these reason postponed my 3D purchase.

My point here is that the market seemed structured to put people off buying 3D for a long while otherwise we would all have it by now.

Yup. It's not even a wholly viable theatrical format AFAIK so why should the BDA bust their ass to include something that simply doesn't exist in terms of commercially available standardised content?

Mr. 2themax: if I understand you correctly there's no support for 3D encoding within UHD BD's specs at any resolution, but shirley the UHD BD players will play legacy 3D BD content as part of their decoding package for regular Blu-ray discs? Or will that decision be left up to the individual manufacturers?

And all the movies on that front page were finished at 2K, so what gives? I remember hearing about Warners' big push for HDR a while back, they've already regraded several movies so they'd be ready to go on the new format(s) but where have the extra K's come from? To upscale or to rebuild, that is the question...

The first film in Dolby Digital came out in December of 1991: STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY...but only on secret test runs. The next was Disney's NEWSIES (featuring a young Christian Bale).
