They were dying, and he was protecting himself by going into hyper sleep. In Alan Dean Foster's novelization of ALIEN, the crew of the Nostromo considers the same strategy, but decides against it since the xenomorph is on the loose and might kill them in their sleep.

[Show spoiler]The last engineer wasn't dying, so why not leave the planet and head to Earth to mop it up? The infected/decapitated engineer's head was not found in the ship, but on the planet with the rest of the dead, so why go into hyper sleep and take the chance of never being awakened when you can finish the job yourself?

Are we allowed to skip spoilers now? I don't want to step on any toes.

None of us knows exactly what happened yet, but you tell me what you would do:

A killer virus has just been released on your space station. You gonna go into stasis, or head off to your cubical and proceed with work as usual?

[Show spoiler]The engineer woke up, got his bearings, killed 3 people and ripped of and androids head, then immediately proceeded to try and take off to Earth. That's why some people believe he was doing anyway. My point is, if he in fact was planning on heading to earth, why stop? He didn't seem to care about any infection when he woke up. How did he what was going on? Are we to expect David filled him in, in one sentence?

I think he knew about the infection, and shut the door that decapitated the other engineer to keep himself safe. If that was the case, I would of got off the planet, not taken a nap.

[Show spoiler]I understood why the engineer was sleeping without any explanation. That is an airbase, where their stealth horseshoe bombers are ready to deploy the life creating/destroying goo on a moments notice. Shite hit the fan, and these dudes started dying in droves. The last aircrew scrambles for their bomber but they don't make it in time. The final crewman goes to sleep to protect himself, waiting for a rescue that never comes.

Had Vickers survived, she would have likely went to sleep in her luxury escape pod and waited for her rescue.

Can't disagree more. If you want to see the ALIEN films in Prometheus, you'll hate it. If you want to see a spinoff in the ALIEN universe, you might like it. If you just go in wanting to see a good sci-fi story, you'll stand the best chance of enjoying it to the fullest.

[Show spoiler]Only because she had no means to get off the planet. However, Shaw was in the same boat and what did she do? She got David and left. The Engineer was able to fly the ship alone, but didn't leave. Doesn't fit, since he woke and headed straight for Earth...unless of course, that wasn't what he was doing?

Actually, if you ask me, the only way this could be more of a prequel, was
[Show spoiler]if the engineers ship got off LV-223 and crash landed on LV-426.

This tied into Alien like crazy, but not in terms of time or number of connections, but the types of connections.

[Show spoiler]The simplest explination tends to be the correct one. He didn't need an explination that 2000 years had went by. There were humans on his ship, which means enough time had passed for us to develop interstellar travel– thus, whatever his initial threat had been was gone.

The hint in the film that some were killed by chestbursters leads me to believe they had an out of control xenomorph infestation.

That's how I see it. What did you take out of it?

Oh, it's certainly connected, but it is not another Alien film...and I think that's half the reason that the minority that didn't like the film didn't like the film.

[Show spoiler]This all makes sense, if you believe they needed millions of litres of black water to wipe us out, but only one mouth full to create all the life on a planet.

Something doesn't sit right with me on that. We saw what one drop was capable of on Halloway. Once canister dropped on a busy airport would of been plenty.

Since the Engineer can fly the ship alone, it doesn't make sense to go into stasis. I'm not saying he should of went off to earth and kill it, because I don't believe the plan was that simple. I believe the plan was misinterpreted.

[Show spoiler]What leads you to believe we were their only creations? That base could have been intended to destroy thousands of civilizations that went awry.

The goo did different things to different organisms. It killed the sacrifice engineer, created the human race, started destroying Halloway, turned two worms into vicious snake-things, impregnated Shaw with a cthulian facehugger, and so on. It does more than just destroy or create. Hopefully, we'll learn a little more about it without all of the mystery being ruined (midichlorines anyone?).

[Show spoiler]It was a proto-queen. A mistake never intended to exist because of the chain of events that took place:

Goo to Halloway to impregnating Shaw to impregnating of engineer. Think of it as a hybrid that we created by interfering with the gods. We had no business there, and now we've turned the xenos into a self–propagating species that were never meant to be
.

Again, that's how I saw it.

Ah! I never realized that until now!
[Show spoiler]It was the earthworms that got changed into those things.
But what I don't get, is why did
[Show spoiler]the canisters start leaking right after the humans arrived

[Show spoiler]The moment they opened the door, it started a change in the tombs atmosphere. Remember the Engineer's head was reading different than his body when they took a sample; which was on the other side of the door. The canisters started to sweat once they opened the door to the tomb.

[Show spoiler]It's been suggested that the canisters were reacting to our presence, as well as the wall murals. It could be from our genetic links to the substance, or because we are the intended target and it's a "smart fluid" of some kind.

I didn't make the worm connection right away, either. It's not obvious because we never see the worms roll around in the black soup, and there is so much to take in as the science party is learning and uncovering things, that the two worms get forgotten.
