Default Report: James Cameron Wants To Return To ‘Aliens’ Mode With ‘Prometheus’ Sequel

source: deadline.com

Insiders tell me that James Cameron was making a slightly humorous off handed comment about making a Prometheus sequel and they’d be surprised if it amounted to anything, considering how busy the director will be preoccupied with Avatar sequels.

EARLIER: Here is a shocker. James Cameron tells The Guardian that after making a groundbreaking sequel to Ridley Scott’s classic film Alien, he now says he wants to make the sequel to Prometheus, Scott’s return to that hallowed ground. The proximity to April Fools always heightens one’s skepticism, but Cameron was out stumping for the 3D conversion of Titanic and when the journalist, Henry Barnes, directly quotes Cameron, you’ve got to pay attention. “There’s a gap of a few years between Prometheus and the original Alien,” Cameron told The Guardian. “That gap is meant for me to answer all the questions raised in Prometheus.”

There was a seven year gap between Scott’s film and Cameron’s sequel Aliens, and there might be that kind of time gap if this really goes forward. After all, Cameron committed to make two more installments of his all-time box office champ Avatar for Fox, when that studio pried him away from directing Cleopatra for Sony Pictures with Angelina Jolie starring. Fox releases Prometheus on June 8. Trying to find out more about this.

All I am getting at is that the Assumption that we know and/or discovered everything in any part of this universe is a little Naive.
As I said before, I never should have brought it up the way I did. Sentiment and opinion tend to play stronger roles in the individual than anything else. We draw up our views of the world around us based mostly on fragmentary ideas and assumptions that have a foundation in elementary education and practical common-sense experience, and then entrench ourselves in those personally tailored perspectives.

There's an old saying that states that you "can't beat an ignorant man in an argument" and I think that's an accurate reference to what I just mentioned above. When you challenge popular perceptions and en-mass ideas, it doesn't matter what your facts are. In those cases the only real rules are the mob rules.

I say this with no insult or disregard to anyone on these boards, as I am just as guilty of such things as anyone else, but it is indeed a frustrating thing to face when presented with an elementary truth: The mass of all atoms in the natural universe is known. As Einstein himself stated, "God does not play dice." Nature repeats herself everywhere, and just as we understand the immutable laws regarding gravity, we understand what makes up this universe. The table has no gaps. There are no places to squeeze another natural stable atom in there. These things were not invented by humans, just discovered and cataloged by them. It's as real and understood as the molecular structure of water. There is nothing else to find in that structure, because that structure is fully understood for what it is.

Again though, people believe what they want to believe, and refuse to hear anything that does not fit into their own personal perspective--it's human nature. Just look at any one impassioned thread on these boards and you'll see how closely people guard their perceptions. It's like Morpheus said in The Matrix (paraphrased) "People are hopelessly dependent on the system, and will defend it with their lives."

I think it is pretty safe to assume that the differences are simply Scott changing things to his own Preference. Putting too much science or thought behind the different terrain is rather pointless.
This is my thinking as well, as such decisions fit Scott's artistic style. He tends to do whatever he thinks is coolest in the moment, so we'll see if that's the case here or if we are indeed seeing a different planet.

Cognitive estrangement is not required for the willing suspension of disbellief. It must be very difficult for you to watch SciFi. The use of the transporter on Star Trek probably caused you some discomfort.

The differences you see in the ringed gas planet planetoid/moon featured in both Prometheus and Alien can be attributed to the fact that alien was filmed on a soundstage at Shepperton Studios, Shepperton, Surrey, England, UK; while the Prometheus scenes were shot outdoors in Hekla, Rangárvallasýsla, Iceland.

lol That's pretty funny, actually. No, I have no problem with suspension of disbelief. I understand movies for what they are: escapist, imaginative, fun. Sci-fi and horror are my favorite genres. When you mix the two, it's like getting the chocolate in the peanut butter for me.

I had zero problem with Cameron's goofy Ultonium, Trek's one-thousand-and-one ridiculous concepts and inconsistencies, or all the time travel paradoxes that occur in the movies (well, most of 'em, anyways).

Well duh. That goes without saying. But you can make anything look like anything with a computer nowadays. There's no excuse if this indeed LV-426. If Scott made an artistic choice, then I'm cool with it, just like I can overlook Cameron's blue, ringless LV-426--but as an artist myself, I try to avoid blatant inconsistency; readers tend to get pretty ticked off about it.

Oh, well. We'll know in a couple more months.

Are you referring to the Unobtanium in Avatar? It is actually a term used to describe rare earths in our universe.

Here are a couple of the sets used for LV 426 in 1979 Alien. There is no reason to reproduce that look in Prometheus when you have the budget to shoot on location in Iceland.

http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/25146

James Cameron: The planetoid harboring the alien derelict ship, named LV-426, was in fact a moon of a ringed gas giant, which was occasionally glimpsed in the sky in ALIEN. The gas giant does not appear in ALIENS because the exterior scenes on LV-426 have an unbroken cloud cover or overcast, and the space scenes are handled in a cursory manner, advancing the story without dwelling on the wonders of interstellar travel, which so many other films have done so well, as their primary reason d'etre. (Cameron originated the name Acheron for LV 426)

James Cameron further explains:

You might say we approached LV-426 from the other direction, and the ringed gas giant companion was out of frame.

The differences in atmosphere are attributed to 26 terraformers in operation for more than 20 years before the arrival of the Sulaco in Aliens.

Very nice! Wish I could read what's written on those mission patches on the suits.

Were those stills from http://www.prometheus-movie.com/news/144 or will we be getting more footage next week? EDIT: Nevermind, I see where you got them from.

I've heard Cameron's excuses for that one in that past, and for the most part I accept his explanation that he didn't want to waste time on space travel (probably a wise decision). As for the atmosphere, I didn't need his help on that one, I already reasoned for myself that the atmosphere processors were altering the makeup of the air, so I was cool with the blue even though it stretched credibility--but his tight-angle reverse-approach cop out has never flown for me.

The ball was dropped, but it isn't a huge ball so I never minded all that much.

The more that I see of this, the more I wish Scott had gone for the dark and 'gritty' look of Alien.

When it's out on Blu-ray, maybe I can apply some kind of software filter to my video software to 'dirty it down' a bit .......... (I play all of my Blu-rays on my PC).
