He was NOT talking about Prometheus - he doesn't give the name of the film, but it could have been Kingdom of Heaven.
There are a number of sites, some reputable, reporting there IS an extended cut. Extended by how much, no one knows for sure until there is official confirmation. Nor does anyone know for sure whether the footage was cut to appease the MPAA and not merely to tighten the film's narrative. I guess time will tell when the runtimes for the European cut and the American cut can be compared, if they are indeed releasing the R rated extended version in European markets. Given Fox's history with this franchise, people have good reason to be concerned with studio interference for the worse.

Prometheus is as scary as Jaws, says Fassbender:

Films are always varying in length as they are edited - to the best of our knowledge, there are only two final cuts - Scott's PG-13 and 'R' submissions.

Anyhow, to back up this 17 minutes issue (which is what people have been so misinformed about) take a look at this interview around 31:35 -

Scott is obviously talking about one of his other films when he mentions 17 minutes being cut.

There is only one real shocker scene in Jaws (chomp chomp went the fisherman), but it's filled with tons of dreadful tension that made it almost unbearable to watch back in its day.

That's what makes good horror--tension and dread. Many modern makers in the genre simply don't understand that, so we have a lot of horror films these days that are nothing more than a series of pop-out surprises designed to make you jump. That's not horror--that cheap and forgettable funhouse thrills.

Horror is watching Seth Brundle slowly fall apart.
Horror is watching Dallas lose his orientation in a dark tunnel as he's being stalked.
Horror is watching a manic-depressive nurse bring her favorite author under her power through torture and intimidation.

I'll go ape shit to see the Space Jockeys in action.

I'm just confused as to why Scott would state this is now an Alien origins film when it clearly is. Perhaps to create controvery amongst the internet and fans?.

It started out as an Alien Origin film but then went in it's own direction. It will have relations to Alien cause they are in the same world.

Alien "Prequel" to die-hard fans = Same universe, scary tension, Weyland-Yutani, Space Jockey, etc.

Alien "Prequel" to general audiences = Xenomorph Alien going around killing people in the fifth installment of a franchise drained dry.

To me giving it a PG-13 rating means they dumbed it down. I know thats not always the case but if it started out as an R movie then becomes PG-13 it means they dumbed it down.

Heres hoping Im wrong.

Scott was always planning it to be PG-13, hes made that pretty clear.

Scott shot it for two possible ratings - PG-13 and R (ie any 'controversial' scenes were shot twice - once with a PG-13 in mind, once with an 'R' in mind).

Apparently (based on Scott's indirect remarks) the PG-13 was submitted to the MPAA, but their 'vision' of a PG-13 doesn't match that of Scott and his PG-13 cut, so they want even more cuts to that PG-13.

Scott is not happy, to say the least. Hence his recent comment that the MPAA 'should get their house in order'.

Have you ever "had the shit scared out of you" at a PG-13 movie?

I haven't, if that was his real intention, he was NEVER going for a kiddy movie.

That's BS. In that case, they should just go all in for a hard R. I can't believe Scott is allowing his film's rating and cuts to be dictated by Fox after the Kingdom of Heaven madness. He needs to stick to his guns more.

Unfortunately, you gotta look at it through the studios eyes. Highly anticipated blockbuster+PG-13= more people seeing it= lots and lots $$$$$$.

If we're to adopt that attitude, we could hardly ever expect to get another R rated film.

My sympathies lie with the artists, not the suits.

I assume that you are referring to the situation as being BS as opposed to my post?

As for Scott 'allowing' all of this - I believe that it will be in his contract, especially bearing in mind the large budget for Prometheus.

Also, I would assume that if he refuses to make any required cuts (assuming that Fox don't opt for an 'R') then Fox will implement them without Scott's co-operation?

Yes, sorry - the situation, not your post.

As for whether it's in his contract, I guess I'm just surprised that Scott would put himself in this position again after the Fox situation on KoH.
