Prometheus Review Thread (Spoilers)

It's not a masterpiece. It's not a trainwreck.

Prometheus has swathes of visual brilliance and touches of narrative greatness. Maybe the gentlest I've ever been let down.

I visit other message boards because I like well rounded opinions. when one sticks to just one place they tend to get a very fractured view of whatever they are discussing. multiple places, with multiple points of view round and create a much more balanced opinion. It's like viewing only one news source for you world news. to bypass bias you must listen to them all and create an opinion based upon sources from both sides of the political spectrum

yeah, not meaning to be a snob, "common" was a poor choice of words. I basically meant the uncritical masses. not the people (such as myself) who are PASSIONATE about film and don't care just about whether it looked and sounded cool but the dissection of film as an art form

Will be interesting to see how the box office ends up. I caught a 10:10 2D showing last night. No line, theater was probably 80% full. But it was a smaller theater out in the suburbs though.

I'll see it in RealD3D on Monday. First viewing Friday was IMAX 3D. The landing of the Prometheus was thunderous. Everything was vibrating.

With the success in the first 15 markets overseas and the unexpected strong opening in the U.S., I hope they don't wait too long to get Scott started on one of the two planned sequels.

I gave the film a 4/5. Visually engrossing, but dialogue could have been improved. Editing could have been improved as well. There are some interesting observations and speculation about the motivation of the Engineers developing on other forums.

loved this as others have said visually stunning best 3d since avatar i thought i was watching planet earth at first ilol 9/10 hands down day one buy for me

I exemplify your post by stating I think people should be able to discuss what they like or don't like in a movie? You said why can't people not participate in threads about movies they don't like. I think it's interesting when there is open back and forth discussion about the merits of a film.

It seems like there's a large amount of people participating in this thread that are having a difficult time processing any views that aren't identical to their own.

If someone comes in here and trashes the movie without backing it up at all, that's not productive to the discussion. It is also not productive to just post a movie rocks and attack people with generalized statements stating someone should just enjoy the movie for what is.

Or would you prefer an echo chamber?

From the Engineers' perspective, so long as humans retained that notion of self-sacrifice as central, we weren't entirely beyond redemption. But we went and screwed it all up, and the film hints at when, if not why: the Engineers at the base died two thousand years ago. That suggests that the event that turned them against us and led to the huge piles of dead Engineers lying about was one and the same event. We did something very, very bad, and somehow the consequences of that dreadful act accompanied the Engineers back to LV-223 and massacred them.

If you have uneasy suspicions about what 'a bad thing approximately 2,000 years ago' might be, then let me reassure you that you are right. An astonishing excerpt from the Movies.com interview with Ridley Scott:

Movies.com: We had heard it was scripted that the Engineers were targeting our planet for destruction because we had crucified one of their representatives, and that Jesus Christ might have been an alien. Was that ever considered?

Ridley Scott: We definitely did, and then we thought it was a little too on the nose. But if you look at it as an “our children are misbehaving down there” scenario, there are moments where it looks like we’ve gone out of control, running around with armor and skirts, which of course would be the Roman Empire. And they were given a long run. A thousand years before their disintegration actually started to happen. And you can say, "Let's send down one more of our emissaries to see if he can stop it." Guess what? They crucified him.

I'm very surprised by all the hate for this.

This was pretty much what I was expecting, minus a couple of characters making some stupid decisions, and a few questions about the cave paintings. I expected an original story with some ties to Alien, some fantastic directing, visuals and audio, and some great acting (most characters were a bit stereotypical). Most expectations were met. I'm a happy customer.

Can't argue with any of your points there - this thread is for discussing the film, irrespective of whether people like the film or not.
