Mr. Weyland was looking for a "fountain of youth" type deal, right? Could he have wanted to test this goo to see what it does to a person, rather than having a specifically malicious intent?

While I like delving into theories of movies, I think it is a little ridiculous how much is not answered in this film. I enjoyed the movie, but I think there should be more definitive evidence and answers.
I thought that too. It was just a test, I think, to see what the hell it would do.

It might be informative if people specified what "type" of IMAX theater they went to (ouch...ended a sentence with a preposition ). Was it a true IMAX or a fake mini (lie) max? Seriously, don't bother with the latter.

Went to a true IMAX theater (6 stories high they say) and was completely blown away by the visual impact. Beautifully shot.

I might be going for a second time this week. Question for those who saw it the second time, what did you think? Better, worse?

I went to the opener and then later the same day, and I still enjoyed it, i found more subtle things that I missed in the first viewing. The first view was definitely better then the second for me at least.

Basically it's supposed to infer that the breakdown of his genetic material eventually leads to us popping up on Earth. This is why the Engineers and humans both have the same DNA structure.
This is what I thought.

This makes me want to see Moon now, since obviously this guy will have ensured there were absolutely zero of the same errors on his project...

But in all seriousness, he does make many valid points about the science and the character development.

I found it to be worse. Once you've made the visual journey, the other flaws becoming more glaringly apparent.

I've seen it two times and found my enjoyment equal on both occasions. Even if some of my quibbles stood out a bit more on the 2nd viewing (I'm not sure they did to be honest), so too did the positives. I relished more in the beauty of the design/cinematography (which I don't think will ever get old for me - my love of this film will be sustained for this alone), as well as Michael Fassbender's stellar performance.

What a whiny rant from that guy!

[Show spoiler]In his complaint that the characters did not act like a competent science team, he completely failed to notice that although this was in name a science mission, it was mostly a vanity project pushed through by the president of the company, who ignored his board (and the protest of his own daughter, who seemed to be a major board member) and put together the mission without regard for such things as whether the people he chose would actually be able to do their jobs. All the president of the company cared about was getting his butt to the planet - the details (selection of geologist, for example!) was just window dressing to conceal his purely personal reason for going.

Nitpickers are so annoying, especially when they are so busy nitpicking that they miss major portions of the story.

And as for what Giger thought about the squishy, organic-like buttons? Well since Giger has said that the ship should appear to have been grown, he'd probably be all for it - if indeed Giger did not suggest them himself, which he may have.

Was using the sound from a flute as a computer log-on a bit precious? Sure. But not liking it isn't a reason to mock it.

The guy is full of himself. I hope he burned a few professional bridges with that epic rant.

Scott answered the question: Why do the Engineers want to destroy us :

[Show spoiler]The film clearly shows that Engineers created life on Earth and then guided humans throughout our development, one day hoping that we would come visit them. But we did something very bad. So bad, that it upset the Engineers. And according to the movie, whatever we did, happened two thousand years ago. The only thing that could be is that we killed Jesus, who apparently was an Engineer as well. Here is a quote from Scott: "If you look at it as an 'our children are misbehaving down there' scenario, there are moments where it looks like we've gone out of control, running around with armor and skirts, which of course would be the Roman Empire. And they were given a long run. A thousand years before their disintegration actually started to happen. And you can say, 'Let's send down one more of our emissaries to see if he can stop it.' Guess what? They crucified him."

his view on Alien

http://www.gavinrothery.com/my-blog/...t-so-good.html
So basically, he doesn't like open-ended stories. He likes tight linear progression. In the Prometheus essay he says how he hates that 'we have to do all the thinking,' and in the Alien essay he says the film is a "tightly wound watch" that you can view 'without any thinking at all.' So a guy involved in making Moon (a sci-fi movie that entices you to think about its ideas) doesn't want to think when he watches movies.

Uh, oh–kaayyy.

With the exception of the stupidity of the two wandering scientists (totally agree with everyone's rants on how that was written) I don't see much more here than the usual whining. Again, ANY film can be deconstructed like that. I used to tear Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade to pieces because of of its many, many logic failures (two German fighters engage in combat over the skys of France and WWII isn't triggered?), yet Crusade is a great film.

Lame. I also hope that his Internet stupidity cost him some work.

Yes. According to Scott, the opening scene was not necessarily on Earth.
[Show spoiler]It was representative of how the Engineers prepared planets by bioforming and then seeding them with life. This is how the actor who plays the Sacrifice Engineer describes his short role: My character is that of a fairly young ‘Engineer’
who ritualistically sacrifices himself in the opening scene. This sacrifice is very different to
any others as I have to drink an ancient mix which causes my body to literally disintegrate
into the water around me. This then provides the first building blocks for new life to form
on the alien planet. (alien planet in this context also refers to Earth)

I enjoyed it more the second time. Saw it in IMAX digital 3D, then in RealD3D 3 days later. I thought there would be a difference in brightness of the image in RealD3D, but there wasn't. The brightness was perfect in each case. This is the best use of 3D that I have seen. I would not want to view Prometheus in 2D. I saw Avatar in 3D several times in the theater. Prometheus is superior 3D. I preordered the 3DBD.

It was difficult to believe it was a 2 hour movie. The time just zipped by.
