Alien Prequel is dead. Instead new film called Prometheus starring Noomi Rapace

Quote:
Big news on the Alien prequel front: it seems as if there is no longer an Alien prequel. What started out as a film expanding the backstory of Ridley Scott‘s 1979 sci-fi-thriller-monster movie masterpiece has become something else.

Today 20th Century Fox has officially announced Prometheus, which will star Noomi Rapace as Elizabeth Shaw, and open on March 9, 2012. What’s going on here? More after the break.

Deadline reports that the film once meant to be an Alien prequel has become something “more original,” and that the Jon Spaihts draft that kicked things off has been reworked by Damon Lindelof and Ridley Scott into Prometheus. In addition to the part being played by Noomi Rapace (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) there is another big female role in the film, which is being circled by Charlize Theron and Angelina Jolie. Three major male roles have to be cast, too.

I couldn’t be more pleased to have found the singular tale I’d been searching for, and finally return to this genre that’s so close to my heart.

While I'm always happy to see something original come out of Hollywood I was really looking forward to Ridley's return to the Alien saga.

Saw this while I was at work, definitely more than a little bummed out I was looking forward to Ridley coming back to the Alien series and bringing it back to full glory. This is definitely disappointing to me

This actually sounds good. I love the Alien Universe, but I will take an original idea for a film, when the people behind it are passionate about the direction it's taking. If we get another "Alien" film, then movie lovers win.

While a new Alien film would've been great, a new sci-fi film from Ridley Scott sounds even better. And come on, if Giger is still involved, how can this go wrong?

Thank. God.

The mythos of the masterpiece that is Ridley Scott / H.R. Giger's Alien remains untouched. *phew*

I welcome an all new potential masterpiece/franchise in Prometheus; definitely looking forward to seeing it.

Perhaps Cameron can do the inevitable 3D sequel: Prometheuses.

...and the inevitable Paul Anderson film: Prometheus vs. Predator

eeeh. not sure how i feel about this. im excited that Ridley Scott is returning to sci fi and interested in what this new movie will bring....but dissapointed that he isnt returning to the alien franchise. oh well, a new Ridley Scott sci fi movie is better then no Ridley Scott sci fi movie.

I can't deny I'm disappointed to hear this, but at the same time I am intrigued to see which direction they are taking with this movie, considering the Alien prequel was the "jumping off point" for the project!

My first thought was one of disappointment. But, having now had time to digest this news I think it's for the best.

I wonder how good an Alien prequel would have been. The defining character in all four 'Alien' films has been one Ellen Ripley, not the titular creature, which leads me to suspect that a prequel would fall a little flat.

It is, perhaps, for the best that an original story has evolved. One which isn't hamstrung by the absence of Ripley.

It's still up on IMDB,but if it's scrapped I don't think it the end of the world.Think that franchise is growing abit long in the tooth.

At least the two AVP films are still around to tell us what happened before Alien! Thankfully, Scott didn't circumvent them with his prequel! Bullet dodged.
