I wonder how good an Alien prequel would have been. The defining character in all four 'Alien' films has been one Ellen Ripley, not the titular creature, which leads me to suspect that a prequel would fall a little flat.

It is, perhaps, for the best that an original story has evolved. One which isn't hamstrung by the absence of Ripley.

Yea, I am feeling this way too.

Some of my very favorite scenes from ALIEN were the shots of the the alien derelict plus the Space Jockey and it's cargo hold.

I was afraid that if they made a prequel to it involving the Jockeys and their purpose with their cargo, then that creepy unknown wonder about them from the first movie would have been ruined forever.

***Midichlorian count*** anyone?

Well, "to each his own" obviously, however IMO, I feel that the first one(theatrical version) is by far the best one of the bunch.

I guess you like the theatrical cut to the special edition?Watched alien 3's special edition, and wondered at some of the changes.Maybe that dog-like alien was abit silly, but it fitted to some degrees.Plus,I hadn't seen it since it was in the theaters way back in the 90's.I'll give alien a go one of these days.

Having thought about this some more, this project now has limitless potential. H.R.Giger (if he's still involved) has free reign to create something epic, without being confined to the design of the space jockey or the alien. Ridley also has the freedom to create an entire universe around this new creation without any constraints from the Alien universe.

Definitely looking forward to this.

Ah, that's a shame.

Well, at least we will get a Sci-Fi film by Scott

I'm still very dissapointed, at the same time I'm grateful that Ridley will be doing another sci-fi, Giger is still on as well right?

If so it greatly alleviates my broken heart.

I dunno, people said that an Alien sequel wouldn;t live up to expectations, and look at Aliens. And this was by Ridley Scott.

While Prometheus is certainly a movie I look forward to, this news does open the door for FOX to pursue the Alien prequel idea with a different director. It could happen. Alien is still an active franchise afterall. And without the added appeal of Scott returning to the franchise he started, it could be a big let down. We'll see how this plays out.

True, but James Cameron had more scope in terms of a having a main character that viewers were already invested in. A potential Alien prequel is solely reliant on the creature and it's attendant mythology.

Which is a mythology many fans from 1979 onwards have been interested in.

I don't like this one bit. The whole time I am going to be watching this film I will be looking for clues connecting back to the Alien films that inspired it.

My question then becomes, just how little did this prequel film connect to the Alien films in the first place that they feel they are able to abort it from the franchise all together?

Yea, I have been wondering about this as well.

I am guessing that they were unable to work around the plot holes of having the humans and Jockeys involved together, when in the first flim they had never seen anything like it. And they most probably did not want to ditch some neat ideas they were coming up with because of it, so they just decided to make a non-releated Sci-fi movie instead.

Myself included. I would dearly love to see a film that explained the nature of the Alien and the Space Jockey. A single still photo of the Space Jockey scene is what sold me on watching Alien.

What I don't want is an unholy mess of a film à la the AvP duo.

we'll just have to wait and see..dont jump the gun if you have not seen the film yet. i am pretty sure that there is a vast of information prior to Alien that needs to be cover, so they made it original. we'll have to see how this movie turns out. i am pretty sure the last scene of the movie will be the nostromo flying into space.

No, it's not a prequel to Alien any more
