Part of the problem is that most people here tend to vastly overrate everything they watch. Everything is always a 4 or 5 immediately after viewing, and that's what they vote on the poll. It's not until they think about what they saw that they notice they have problems with the movies. Then we have a situation where six months later someone doesn't care for a film they voted a five for.

If that's the case then it's the same thing that happens on IMDb.

Heavily-hyped new releases hardly ever maintain their initial rating throughout the following months or years. Deadpool, for instance, was #42 on the Top 250 last February. It's nowhere to be found today.

One for the music score, the other for Fassbender. It looks mighty purdy too but so does every Ridley Scott film, I won't give it another star for that. Pish pish pish is what it is.

She's still visibly hurting while she's on the Juggernaut with Weyland and the Engineer.
This is an older post but I wanted to respond because this deserves clarification.

It's not the pain that she would be feeling that is the issue. Why do you think the staples are there? What are staples for? They are for keeping her wound closed. Because without staples, she would tear herself open just trying to get up or move around. People who undergo that type of surgery and require staples are laid out for a long time afterwards. Their skin needs time to heal and the wound to close. Their abdomen muscles are unable to withstand the stress of standing/running. She's jumping from platforms and running and falling and pulling herself up and down great heights. It's preposterous. She would have literally torn herself open and bled out at her first attempt at those antics.

The medical pod scene was poorly handled for that reason. If they had shown a laser "sealing" the wound after the operation, I would have had no problem accepting that future science had found a way to instantly "fuse" the wound closed and initiate rapid healing. But instead they depicted old-fashioned staples. The staples have no other purpose other than keeping the wound from tearing open, therefore, since she was given staples, she would not be able to move like she did.

That's the problem with her operation. It wasn't the pain. It's the fact that she literally - physically - would not be able to move like that.

Whatever flaws Prometheus may have, and it does have its share, I applaud the attempt of Ridley Scott and the writers to elevate the material onto higher philosophical ground.

Much more interesting to me than the straight action story put forth by James Cameron.

...even though Aliens is clearly the better film imo.

Dude, you're sooo hard on this film sometimes! You seem to hate it more as time goes on . Can you not even admire the ambition of the film, even if the execution wasn't spot on? The atmosphere, the design work, the cinematography, the new concepts introduced (Engineers, black goo mutation etc), the creation hierarchy idea (they created us, we created androids) with creations turning bad. Trying to actually do something new with the Alien universe surely gives it at least some merit? And the C-Section scene alone is rather awesome, no? I can't believe all that doesn't even add up to 1 more star.

I KNOW it's a clunky film, and it's a little frustrating, but darn, I still really, really enjoy it, with the good FAR outweighing the bad for me. Just surprised how strongly you dislike it now. Bet you buy the UHD Blu-ray though .

Yeah, that's pretty much my view. I'm not saying that just because a film aims high, it gets a free pass, but the criticism towards Prometheus, compared to so many other films just seems way off balance. It is flawed, but so are many other films.

love the 3D, wish Ridley had shot Covenant in 3D as that had so many great moments that would've looked wonderful in the 3rd dimension.

The 3D wasn't stellar by any means. There are many films with far better/stronger 3D, and films that utilize it far better (like framing). But I just watched it this past weekend and I will say the 3D was better than I remember it being in the theatre. It was quite good at times.

I agree it's a shame they didn't release Covenant in 3D.

It's Ridley's weakest 3D movie definitely, both Exodus and The Martian had stronger 3D but as you say Prometheus still looks fantastic.

I have a lot of problems with Prometheus. But I will say the film is often gorgeous. And I give it credit for doing something different and being ambitious. Sadly, the execution left a lot to be desired.

It's a good movie to watch with the sound off. I wish there was an isolated score version so I could listen to the music but not the horrible dialogue.

Prometheus is one of my favorite films of the last decade. Loved how it dared to dive deeper into the Alien mythology and tell the story of the Space Jockey. Also loved not knowing what was around the corner at every turn. Amazing film. 4.5/5.

How do you feel about Covenant essentially sweeping all of those story threads under the carpet?

I only watched Prometheus a few weeks back, but I can't remember, did Shaw only take David's noggin' with her at the end of the movie? I remember her putting it in the bag and repelling out of the shuttle. If so what's she did she attach his head to in The Crossing?

She lowered the body down.

It's more that it starts off so well and then pisses it all away on a raft of thoroughly unlikeable characters, tin-eared dialogue, slasher-movie-level plotting and a denouement which is literally rushed through so that the movie can just....stop. Yes, you can have great concepts and ideas and whatnot but - as I say whenever people wax lyrical about those kinds of merits of the Star Wars prequels - that stuff means **** all to me when it's presented in such a cack-handed fashion.

I'm not sure where you get the impression that I'm somehow being harder on the film now than I was back then, e.g. this post from 2012 https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...54#post6581854 or this post from 2013 https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...us#post7764702 would seem to suggest that I've always been down it.

I'm a glutton for punishment to be sure, as the visuals and the music and Fassbender are enough to draw me back in, but upon actually watching it I feel like throwing rotten vegetables at the screen whenever Fifield appears, and when the movie enters the third act it just falls apart. And, as I said all of four years ago, I'm DYING to see an extended cut which restores some deleted scenes as they add so much to the movie IMO, but it's likely we'll never see one and that makes me feel even more bitter.

Uh, I'll still buy the UHD though. Maybe I'll have a Star Trek Into Darkness kind of epiphany when I watch it, whereupon I will Learn to Stop Worrying and Love Prometheus.

I can't love it in any way either Geoff. Sitting in the theater was excruciating, but it was fun to brutally dissect it with my friends afterwards. I've seen the blu on sale for 3.95 and I can't give the man who made that any more money nor put it on my shelf. I'll be keeping a tab on Covenant from a safe distance!
