I'll take an ambitious movie that doesn't totally land over cookie cutter sequels any day of the week. Prometheus had a lot of problems but at least it tried something new.

I see that defense for a lot of shitty movies. Whether you're playing it safe, or trying something different, it's the results that count. And Prometheus is a stain on the iconic classic Alien.

Prometheus is the stain remover the franchise needed after Resurrection - Requiem.

I'll say this about Prometheus, it's a hell of a lot better than Covenant.

It knew what it wanted to be, that’s for sure. With Covenant, it def feels like two movies/stories spliced together (I still enjoy both films btw).

If Ridley Scott got to make Prometheus 3 and it was about the Engineers vs. David and tied directly into the beginning of Alien, I think general audiences would be interested. Who wouldn’t want to see that? Let the man finish his goddamn trilogy! How can they just let it end on that massive cliffhanger in Covenant?

The answer is simple: money. It's all about the Benjamins. As far as "general audiences", you are grossly overestimating what the average viewer wants.

I think it’s easily the third best Alien movie. Now a lot of that is due to the quality of the others, but I do think it’s a solid movie.

Yup but I still like Covenant...and I also like AvP both films especially the second one (which is what Alien 5 could have been but in broad daylight and rampaging through Los Angeles or New York. San Francisco would be cool too)

I get what you're saying and don't entirely disagree. But I'm very tired of technically-competent rebootquells that bring nothing to the table aside from being a passible movie connected to a better movie.

Compare Terminator: Salvation to Terminator: Dark Fate for example. The latter brought back old cast members, retreaded the original plot, and was better reviewed by critics. Better movie than Salvation? Maybe, but at least Salvation moved the plot forward as a distinct new chapter.

All I'm saying is Kudos to Sir Scott for boldly going new places even if it's what the fans don't want. Under Disney's stewardship, the next movie will probably be a soft-reboot about a new woman trapped on a small spaceship being terrorized by a single Alien picking the rest of the crew off, it'll be decently made and review in the 60-70s on average. It'll probably be better than Prometheus by most metrics, but that doesn't mean I won't respect Prometheus more.

With Lightyear coming out soon, we watched the original Toy Story tonight. When Buzz freaked out because Woody opened his helmet, I turned to my GF and said, "He's smarter than the people in Prometheus!"

I just got the Prometheus soundtrack on CD from eBay. Absolutely love the music in this movie. I hold it in high esteem along with the first three Alien scores. Coincidentally these are also my favorite movies in the franchise. my ranking for the movies: Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, Prometheus.
