Amen to that!

It's probably the only way to do so.

So, I am thinking of this now as more of a 'TV spinoff'.

Fascinating!

Agreed, that's definitely what it sounds like this is going to be. That's probably why they went out and said "This isn't exactly an Alien prequel." when in reality it partially is. But it's setting out to be its own thing as well. And I can't wait to see what they have in store for us

No it isn't. When has a Hollywood studio ever decided NOT to use a popular brand to sell a film when it could?

well, I hope it is somewhat still connected, like I said, I have the feeling it could like Chronicles of Riddik was to Pitch Black.

Usually after the popular brand has run its course and, in the public's eye, hasn't had a worthy installment in 25 years. Prometheus, if an Alien prequel, will still be related enough to incite the Alien fans, and separate enough to clean the slate, so to speak. Most of the reviews -if it had Alien in the title- would be spent talking about how the last 25 years have been a downward spiral. FOX and Ridley are right to want to avoid that association whilst still moving forward with the series in some capacity. The last thing Scott would want as a film-maker is to make a pre-Alien film that exists solely to put the derelict ship on the planetoid, something that most prequels don't manage to avoid.

I don't think Scott ccares that much. He signed on to do an Alien Prequel, and was talking it up for a while. They then release a press release saying it isn't and they're doing something different. He wouldn't be ashamed to say he's still doing a prequel. This situation, I'm sure is sort of like how Spielberg was going to do Night Skies, but then took elements from that script and made ET.

He cares about how it's represented, for sure. He's always talked about changing the whole thing.

'If I was going to do another Alien movie, I would have to re-design it. He's no longer scary, and I think there's a new franchise, which has kind of blown that away, I think ... It's a pity in a way, because I was kind of beginning to address it, looking at it again, thinking there may be something there that we can go with one more time. I think you can't stay with that beast any longer. You've got to change it. It can't be as simple as that. I mean, the first thing I would have gone back to was [HR] Giger. I'd have gone back to where I started, basically.'
Ridley Scott.

Redesigning, concerns about the 'new franchise [AVP]', having to change things, and going back to where he started ie, building anew. This was said in early 2010, he's always known he has to remove the last 25 or so years from the audience's mind. He's also said of the series '[it] now has died on the road somewhere way back and lying in the dust.'

Prometheus does sound like the Alien prequel though:

'[The Alien prequel] is going to go further into that world of terraforming," which is the process of modifying a planet's atmosphere to be live-able. It also may explore the idea of what it will take to travel to these places.'
Ridley Scott, 2010.

These are apparently the topics of interest in Prometheus, so it's been on his mind for a time.

More Prometheus Details

Alien Prequel News | Posted by Corporal Hicks on 02 Feb 2011 17:47 GMT

American film magazine Production Weekly has recently published this synopsis about Prometheus:

[Show spoiler]
“The story takes place in the distant future. There are two superpowers on Earth fighting each other for what’s left of the remaining natural resources spread out across the solar system. One of these superpowers have created and sent a giant terraforming ship to a distant planet called Erix. Their hope is to take this living world and reshape it so that humans can live there.

This enormous terraforming spacecraft lands on Erix, a harsh and uninhabitable planet where it dispenses six smaller mobile units called Crawlers which spread across 125 kilometers of the planet and sow seeds which then terraform the planet. And the name of this terraforming spaceship is…”Prometheus.” The severity of Erix’s indigenous life is notable which are essentially referred to as bio-mechanoid killers. (Offers out to Angelina Jolie & Charlize Theron for Vickers, Michael Fassbender for David, and Gemma Arterton for the role of Truks. / Release date June 8, 2012.)”

Some of this sounds vaguely like the Jon Spaihts script Shadow-19 but I haven’t read said script yet so I can’t really comment.

As well as this it has been confirmed that Prometheus will be shooting in Morocco in Feburary according to Nourreddine Sail, head of the Moroccan Cinema Centre: “he is expecting Ridley Scott to start shooting his next film, the upcoming Alien prequel, at the country’s southern Ouarzazate film studios next February and March.”

Thanks to Dustin and wmmvrrvrrmm for the news. Also UK film magazine Empire is running a small spread on Prometheus in its next issue. Watch this space.

If they are starting filming this month why have we not heard any more casting information? unless they are just doing principal photography not involving actors.

This sounds more like an Avatar ripoff: "As man depletes all the natural resources out of the blah blah blah blah" rather than a Ridley Scott film. So the "bio-mechanical killers" aren't the Alien species?

I hope it is not another Avatar rip off, because that would not be good.. I think the basis provide something a little different, more about the subplot in Aliens, I mean, why go to LV426 to make the air breathable??? we never see earth and probably wont, i like however how this movie is developing, it could be something very interesting to see on the big screen... but like i said before, unless they will do a massive press release, i dont understand why no more casting announcements have been made. i hope charlize theron said yes! angelina no! but i would also like to see the cast to be real, the reason why alien 1 to 4 to me works is because the cast were real people that you know of, i would hate to see another "Dune" type movie where things dont make sense dialogue and story wise. the alien films have been straightforward, but that's not to say i like twists and turns or surprises just make it interesting to watch with a lot of spirits...

i think my poster design, the more i know about prometheus, the more it fits to the concept of the story.

lol? It sounds nothing like Avatar. Avatar was about a private company wanting a mineral to take back to Earth. This sounds like trying to replace Earth with a planet for humans by terraforming a new one.

I don't know why people are so caught up with this being an Alien prequel. They said they were taking elements from Shadow 19 (Spaihts script), re-written by Lindelof. The synopsis from that article, is exactly like Shadow 19. (FYI this was written before the Alien Prequel.)

Quote:
The situation in our world is this: The Earth is split into two factions, The Allied States and The Hegemony. Overpopulation has stretched the world’s resources to the point where the supply of basic necessities like food and water cannot keep up with the demand. The growth rate of humanity has rendered our world unsustainable. Half of the Allied States’ federal budget is classified and the existence of these “black funds” has come under serious scrutiny by world leaders.

Prometheus is basically a super-intelligent terraforming machine designed to transform a planet twenty-light years away, named Erix, into a new Earth. Once Prometheus landed on Erix, it divided into six mobile sections called Crawlers. These Crawlers spread over the surface of the planet, sowing the seeds to make this alien planet habitable.

lol Duuuuude relax. I generalized it by the lame enviornmental theme from the other movie. Why in every futuristic movie do the minerals have to be depleted?

Anyway, this was originally touted as an Alien prequel right? Until he announced it wasn't, but didn't feel like going back and reading page after page in this thread (lazy sorry) hence why I asked.

And why can't the idiot humans in these films find those common minerals on worlds not inhabited by twelve-foot blue aliens or bio-mechanoid killers?

Stan:
"Hey, Bob. The moon has all the natural minerals we will ever need! It's basically a giant rock no more than a week's trip as the space crow flies. That thing's ready for plundering!"

Bob:
"Nah. I think we should fly 250 light-years out of our way and expose ourselves to much more hostile conditions, setting ourselves up for conflict and obvious failure, and showing just how dumb and desperate the human race really is."

Stan:
"Good call. I'm in."

PW reported nothing new, I'm afraid. They reported an old Shadow 19 synopsis and copy-pasted some info from Scriptflags.

The space ships hurt the "alien" feel of the world by introducing a presumably human element.

Also the font seems very "B" sci-fi movie.

Just my opinion
