Ridley made that comment once, drunkenly [apparently] and as a jest. It was never seiously considered. [And of course, there was no Gateway at that point, in or outside of the Alien world. Cameron created it in Aliens, and Ripley didn't recognise the place ]

That detail with the head controlling the spaceship sort of reminds me of Lynch's Dune, with those huge aliens (called navigators if I remember correctly) controlling travel between worlds with spice.

I never liked Dune, the dialog was absurd, they talked too much about technical stuff it left me confused and the alien head looked terrible, maybe this humanoid head will look more bio mechanical than organic which would make it scary. This could be war of the world alien style. I'm still excited about both the film and the casting choices so far is phenomenal! I tried watching blade runner but can't get into it to finish it.

Yeah, I believe Giger also did some concept art for Dune. And funnily enough, one of them featured a kind of car or locomotive with a big, humanoid, head on top.

It looks like they bringing Giger's nightmares to life. Woohoo!

June 2012 Release for Prometheus?

Alien Prequel News | Posted by Corporal Hicks on 22 Feb 2011 17:54 GMT

Alien Prequel News has posted up a tidbit from some of their readers about the UK release for Prometheus:

“According to a press release from RENTRAK to UK cinemas today, Fox has currently set the Prometheus release date to June 1st 2012 for the UK. This release date is of course subject to change.”

I’ve also had a look at the UK 20th Century Fox press site but it currently has no release date on it. I’ve also got some friends who work in UK cinemas checking their release sheets to see if they’ve got anything. Watch this space. Thanks to dandan for the link.

Lynch's vision of the film strays a lot from the book, which in many ways is much more straightforward than what he put up on the screen. The only exotic things I can remember out of the book were sandworms, ornithopters, and the 4th-stage spice navigators (which look more like alien angels than the worm thing in a freight car Lynch gave us). I think he wanted something a little more shocking and gothic than what Herbert described.

To date, there still hasn't been a really excellent adaptation of that story. You've got Lynch's visually interesting piece with the cool Toto soundtrack, and then you have the passionless paint-by-the-numbers version the SyFy Channel gave us a few years ago.

The only thing good about the TV version is we finally got a good presentation of house Harkonan. Lynch just brushes over them, turning them into heartless monsters to be foils against the hero, but the SyFy program really gave them their due, showing them as the backstabbing plotters they always were.

The average person doesn't really pay attention to directors.

Hence why Michael Bay movies make so much money

I would have to think that AVATAR's close to $3 billion take, mostly had to due with the it's director's reputation and past successes.

I agree, if that was the case, we wouldn't be seeing directors names plastered on hyped films

I would argue that it had that success because the trailers looked cool and word of mouth. Some on this board and a few others may pay attention to directors, but I think the majority of the public pays more attention to who is in the movie, the trailers, and what their freinds say, not who directed it.

Good points, however I have the feeling that if 'Michael Bay's' name had been on it instead, it would have failed to break the $1 billion mark.

No one will ever know. But more than the name might have been the lack of talk about it had it been an inferior product to what Cameron released, and the trailers probably wouldn't have caught so many people's attention.

I went and saw it because it was James Cameron, the same reason I went to go see Titanic.

Yeah, I only knew Avatar was big Cameron and with an insane budget so that is why. The trailer didn't look anything special.. turns out the movie wasn't anything special either, though the CGI looks great.

The more I learn about this movie the more and more I'm looking forward to it. I'm actually glad it's not being called Alien (Insert random prequel title here) and trying to be its own thing, while still being related to the Alien series. It's actually one of the best movies that Scott and Fox could have made I think.

Early Prometheus Script Not Alien-Related

Alien Prequel News | Posted by Corporal Hicks on 23 Feb 2011 17:40 GMT

And to add even more confusion over whether Prometheus is Alien related or not, Dark Horizons have just posted this:

“Another source shot me a message today having read an early draft of the script saying that a “bioweapons planet” is the only link to the “Alien” films in it and it’s a tenuous one at best.”

Key thing to note there is that the source talks of an early draft. The shooting draft may have been changed if SkyMovie’s contact is correct. Thanks to Darkoo for the news.

Swiss newspaper Blick had a chance to talk to Alien designer HR Giger about his involvement in Prometheus.

"Ridley Scott and I met in London to discuss the details of the project" confirms Giger. "It was a warm reunion after such a long time."

According to the newspaper, Giger has been busy working in his studio in Zurich on the latest creatures for Prometheus. Unfortunately he's bound by contract to not give away any details.

"It's going to be huge. I can not tell what I'm doing exactly"

He does however confirm that Prometheus will take part in the same universe as the Alien series.

Giger won an Oscar in 1980 for his work on Alien, and the Swiss newspaper asks him if he's hoping for his second Oscar this time.

"We'll see what the future brings. I did my work but never in terms of awards, otherwise I would have had to adjust."

It's Alien-related for sure.

That's great, the design work for the original Alien is by far some of the scariest artwork I have ever seen.
