A dud? No...not in the slightest because even if it DOES have a big drop this weekend the film will have still made more than its budget and then some.

I would expect numbers in the range of $20-$25 million this coming up weekend.

Well, it was certainly worth your time to send out (at least) two posts and read what others think. One thing I found interesting and didn't really think of it until just a moment ago when I re-read my response to you. I used words like "think" and "for my tastes". You use words like "I have no doubt" and "this movie is" and others. See the difference? Whether a movie is good or enjoyable is subjective. It's not a fact (except in someone's mind). Sure, you can point to reviewers who gives it a thumbs down and others can point to reviewers who don't. But what does that matter? It's just an opinion and should be treated as such.

I went into this movie knowing almost nothing about what I was going to see. I came out thinking mostly, "It was just a hackneyed retread of elements from the original ALIEN, done with great gloss, the movie certainly looks good, but it's a mess."

What I did go in knowing, based on his track record, is that Ridley Scott is a very uneven director. Sometimes he does a good movie, but other times he gives us HANNIBAL and ROBIN HOOD and now PROMETHEUS.

Why was this movie made? I've read that Fox wanted to reboot the ALIEN franchise. (I could frankly live without that.) So they got the "great" Ridley Scott back to direct it. But, Scott isn't a screenwriter, but I'm sure he has a hand in hiring the screenwriters and developing the script, so I feel it all rests with him in the end. Anyway, I think the suits at Fox made a huge mistake going with this project and the result is a muddle. Even though it'll make its money back (already has) and will turn a nice profit, I don't think it's going to be what Fox had in mind. So, I doubt there will be a sequel. Instead there will probably be yet another reboot in five years. ALIEN and ALIENS have a large fan base, but I wonder, do any of the other, terrible, ALIEN movies have anyone that cares about them?

It could come in at about $25M. That would be a fairly average drop for a movie like this. I suspect it will come in a little bit higher because I just don't see the new releases as appealing to people who tend to go see a movie like Prometheus. Next week "Brave" comes out and, again, it'll probably take more from Madagascar than Prometheus. I see it having a fairly stable run until July 3rd (SpiderMan). It's been very strong overseas (about $90M so far).

We'll see, huh?

Wouldn't it have been easier to just say what you didn't like about it and be done with it?

Not true, Scott had to fight to get this film made.

You have a point, and I do tend to write rather emphatically, but I take it as a given that we all know this is subjective opinions we're dealing with here.

So, for me, my feelings and opinions are facts, and for me, this movie is one of the largest, because of all the hype and expectations, turkeys Hollywood has produced in a while. It's like the 2001 Tim Burton PLANET OF THE APES debacle all over again -- and it took a decade for Fox to correct that mistake.

Just think about it.

Really?!!! He wanted to do this project? Why? (Other than the money to be made, that is.)

I mean, I'm not surprised, but -- again, for me -- it's another nail in the coffin for the idea that Scott is one of the better Hollywood directors.

And now I've wasted enough time on this and I'm done. Sorry if I've annoyed anyone, but I just had to get my two cents in.

Listen to Ridley Scott's audio commentary from Alien.

This has been going around for a while Cameron was going to do this film but urged Fox not to go ahead with AVP, in return, but we all know what happened there

If a film like this makes you that upset you have to write paragraphs and paragraphs pf rage you probably shouldn't watch movies in general.

This is not a "waste" or a "dud". Some people...

I get what you mean, and it can be hard to separate our opinions from fact when it seems like it should be obvious to everyone when we point out the reasoning for our ideas.

I think one mistake I often see is people citing their personal experience as some kind of reference for fact - such as the crowd they saw it with. Your crowd filed out of the theater with very little conversation, but that hardly means everyone hated the movie.

At the end of the movie in my theater - they clapped at the last scene (which I thought was a bit of an eye roller) - but, obviously, others were very happy with the writer's/director putting that in just for them, the fans. Obviously, that doesn't support the idea that everyone loved it.

I know we are all very passionate about films (or we wouldn't be talking about this one on this site) - but we do need to try and keep ourselves from saying "we" instead of "I".

But like I said, I get what you mean. I personally liked what Prometheus presented, however, I've been on the other side many times wondering - "How can you sit there straight faced and say you thought this was good?!", haha.

Oh well, I guess it good then that we're all allowed to like what we like. If we weren't, we'd all be listening to our parents music.

From my point of view - I liked it (had issues with some dumb character choices) - but overall, liked the that the story they were telling was larger than the Alien universe we are used to. I actually wish this movie was completely separate from the Alien universe so it could be taken on its' own merit, instead of measuring it against the Alien storyline.

Either way, I'm very interested in a sequel. I'd love to see where the story heads from here.

I saw it again yesterday and I liked it just as much as the first time. It was a full theater on a Wednesday night and unlike some people's experience, the crowd was most definitely receptive to all the right beats in the film. Someone even proclaimed "holy
[Show spoiler]shit" after the creature at the end exposed it's second set of jaws.

I am not one of those fanboys who claims that those who didn't like the film "didn't get" it. I simply recognize that Prometheus is not everybody's cup of tea. Some people like coffee after all. So while the haters enjoy their coffee, I will most definitely enjoy my tea. Everyone's happy.

Isn't this a "world of Alien"? The way I see it is that some things have a beginning, and the retrospect I have is that this is opening doors of events prior to Alien...there are a lot of open ended questions, and a sequel (Paradise?) should be able to help bridge that "gap"...

Actually, serious question. What is the generally accepted statute of limitations on Spoiler tags?
