A question for those who thought this was "great" - are you sure that you weren't just wowed by the spectacular visuals?

If it had looked merely average, would you have still enjoyed the story, the characters, the dialogue ........ ?

[Show spoiler]so why did David put the black goo in holloway's drink? And was he taking orders from weyland?

Like many of you I have a problem with the last scene. It bugged the sh** out of me. It felt like the whole movie could have stood on its own before that. I think Scott was just trying to pull of too much by stuffing an alien prequel and a whole new stand alone narrative in one 2 hour film.

Amazing cast and amazing visuals. I will be buying the bluray (pq and aq should be top notch) and look forward to seeing it with different expectations.
This was answered in a previous post but I know there are many pages also so I will post it.
[Show spoiler]He put the black goo in his drink because Weyland asked David to "try harder" and then David asked Holloway "how far would you go to get your answers? What would you be willing to do?" and Holloway answered "Anything and everything". Holloway basically said he would risk everything to find answers. So David took that as a "you gave me permission then to risk your life so that you can find your answers; and the same time I am obeying my master's (Weyland's) commands".

Just saw this a few hours ago and thought it was really well done. The creators and well the whole look of the film was incredible. I saw it in imax 3D and will say the 3D is very weak though. I left with more questions than I came with, but was absolutly entertained. It seems pretty obvious to me AVP is not cannon after seeing this. The movie begs for sequels, but Im afraid if any other director touched them it would end up like Alien; 1 amazing 2 great, 3 turd, 4 turd. Anyways day 1 for the bluray, hopefully I'll be watching on the 80" sharp by then.

Yes, the SJ in Alien was much larger than the retconned 'suited' version in Prometheus. It also looked different in a lot of other ways, plus of course the one in Alien was obviously skeletal and wasn't wearing a 'suit'.

5/10 for me. Not even close to the quality of the first two alien movies.

When I first saw the size of the aliens I was like MAJOR SPOILERS
But its answerd at the end. I have a few questions though besides the fact that prometheus was way more advanced than that pos in alien lol. First the space jockey in alien had its chest cavity blown out...so why did that not happen in prometheus? How come they never found those bio weapon canisters in the ship in alien instead they found eggs that do the same thing. Who laid all the eggs in alien? It also appears that what we know as the classic alien was made when the parasite/bio weapon combined with the creator, then why were predators fighting aliens in 10,000+b.c? When the parasite was in the human it just controlled his mind and made the host super tough and strong, yet when it combines with a creator the alien pops out?! Why did the parasite she removed get so big?
Anyways still loved the movie.

They're on LV-226 in Prometheus. Different planet. It's reasonable to assume that when Shaw leaves to travel to the space jockey's home, LV-426 she has a chest burster inside her from the face hugger and crash lands. If you look at the way she's acting even after the C-section, she's straining in pain like there's still something inside her.

Stop expecting this movie to tie in and answer questions conjured up from Alien. That's not its purpose.
Do you even know what you're talking about? You're just arguing for argument's sake.

Really enjoyed this one.

The only minor complaint I have is the fact that this pretty much throws AVP/AVPR out of continuity which is fine because Scott never considered it to be in there anyway but as an Alien/Pred fan I always did.

In all honesty I think any complaints are people being typical complainers. Even if this movie wasn't an Alien prequel it would still stand alone as an enjoyable film.

How anyone could not get an ALIEN vibe from this is beyond me and the fact everyone wants all the answers in the first film is also beyond me. I wouldn't wanted to have seen what people here thought back in 1999 when Phantom Menace came out. "OMG!!!!!!! VADER DIDNT DEBUT!!!! I WANT MY MONAYYYZ BACK@!!@!111> i'M NOT BUYING THE VHS!!!111 HAh!"

Just think of it like this:

Prometheus = Phantom Menace
Alien = A New Hope

Now gimme a sequel as enjoyable as this sucker!.

No I am not joking. A person that goes into an Elm Street movie knowing the genre of film and complains of too much blood just doesn't make any sense to me. LOTR is about war... was he expecting Legolas to sit down with Smegal and have tea the entire 9 hours?.

You're basically describing 90% of the blockbusters out there, and Prometheus is not among those shallow films. The visuals are outstanding, yes, but I do admire the rest of the film's aspects as well. It wowed me in the same way Inception did, which was as a whole. Of course it wouldn't be as good without the outstanding visuals, but in the end, they're just icing on an already delicious cake.

The thought had occured to me but she cut the parasite out of her, also accounting for the pain. I guess that will be answered in the next movie.
Just a general question would be why would they seed life on earth taking billions of years to culminate in human beings, then want to destroy us. Also why destroy us with parasites? Why not some uber bomb? If they want to replace us with aliens seems kind of long drawn out plan (billions of years) to create the perfect host lol. Also would be a big step backwards. Why would they care after billions of years? Also why havent they changed after billions of years neither physically or in technology? Im guessing maybe they also were created to do this specific job. That would also make sense of the first one giving his life to seed our planet.
Lots of great potential here for future movies.

And you don't think that's because
[Show spoiler]that c-section was just stapled together and the painkillers are starting to wear of?

Nah if that were the case I would like THE THIN RED LINE or GI JOE.

Great movie. Incredible visuals and sound (saw it in IMAX 3D).

I don't know what else people wanted or expected from a RS prequel.

First, saying this isn't a prequel to Alien is absurd. Of course it is. Sure it can stand on its own and has its own thread of a story it could follow in sequels (which I'd love to see), but mainly, this explains the genisis of the Alien we have known for decades.

I'm also confused about all the confusion from critiques. What is so confusing? The captains comes straight out and explains what the planet is and what they were/are doing.

If this movie hadn't been an Alien prequel by Ridley, critiques would have been praising this all over the place. There are only a couple of moments that missed there mark, and a couple of logic questions I have.

Overall, it was great film making and a solid prequel that also works as a great stand alone movie.

The first Alien and Blade Runner were also put down by critiques and have gone on to be considered the example to strive for in those genres. I don't know if Prometheus will ever aspire to that level, but I think when the smoke clears, Ridley will once again be the one standing.

Just given it 5 stars.
I have seen it twice now and I must say it is without doubt one of the best sci-fi films to come out in a long time. Thank you Ridley for once again giving us a thought provoking film in a genre that, for the most part, is full of dross.
Really hope this does well enough box-office wise so we can get the sequels, and hopefully Ridley attatched as well.

That's the beauty of sequels. I'm sure the 2nd will give us the remaining answers we need.

But Prometheus did the following things:

[Show spoiler]1. Showed us the Space Jockeys.
2. The creation of the Xenomorph

and that is pretty much the main things we wanted from this film.

Now it's up to the sequel to answer the rest and we are set.

Loved this movie from beginning to end.

Quick Alien 3 question since it's been forever. Was the Weyland in that one also an Android or the actual Weyland?.

I'm pretty sure it was the actual Weyland. I remember reading somewhere that in the novel for the film, it's stated that he's the actual Weyland.
