The mashup novel it's based on was a best seller, plus it will be directed by Timur Bekmambetov.

Who did the Angelina Jolie flick wanted and the action packed Russian vampire films Night Watch and Day Watch.

Should be a fun popcorn film, President Lincoln all bad ass hunting and slaying vampires?

Count me in.

Interview with Damon Lindelof concerning the movie. Pretty interesting stuff IMO.

Lindelof Explains How Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’ is Connected to the ‘Alien’ Films
Quote:
Screenwriter Damon Lindelof appeared on The Kevin Pollak Chat Show this week and talked about his latest work writing on Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus, how he got the job and how that connects to the Alien films. Find out what he said after the jump.

Here are some quotes from Lindelof:

It started as an Alien prequel. That is what everybody wanted it to be. Obviously, Ridley Scott has not made a science fiction movie in 25 years, since Blade Runner, so the idea that he’s returning to this genre is huge. But there is a real issue which is — what is the state of the Alien franchise at this point in our lives? There has been Alien vs. Predator and all these things, and its been completely and totally diluted. I’ve always felt that really good prequels should be original movies. And the sequels to those prequels should not be the movie which already exists because, with all due respect to anyone who makes a prequel, but why would you ruin the greatest twist in the history of cinema, “Luke, I am your father”, by showing me three movies which basically spoil that surprise. You can do movies which take place before Star Wars, but I don’t need to see the story of the Skywalker clan. Show me something else which I can’t guess the possible outcome of. There is no suspense in inevitability. So a true prequel should essentially proceed the events of the original film, but be about something entirely different, feature different characters , have an entirely different theme, although it takes place in that same world. That was my fundamental feeling about what this movie wanted to be.

And truth be told, it wasn’t script doctoring in the strictest sense because the draft that existed before I came on was written by this guy named Jon Spaihts and it was very good. And there were a lot of things in the movie, Prometheus, which were Jon Spaihts and I feel like somewhere in the media reconstruction of this story, the tale is that I come in, I pitch an entirely new story, and its so original that everything else gets thrown out and that’s what we’re doing. In my brain, that’s not exactly what happened. But I also do feel that this movie is the movie I would want to see as a fanboy, take place in that Alien universe, which precedes the events of the original Alien, but is not necessarily burdened by all the tropes of that franchise with Facehuggers and Chestbursters, and all that stuff that I love… but its sorta like, we’ve seen it before, can we do something different this time? And thats the movie that Ridley wanted to make. And when you’re working with an auteur, you basically just shut your mouth and listen and try to transcribe and channel the vision of that person, and get out of the way.

So I read it, and it was good. This was not a disaster. There were really good ideas in that script. So I sent off an email…. Ridley works with these guys, Michael Ellenberg and Michael Costigan. I basically sent them an e-mail and said, here is what I think, and here is what I would do, if you were interested, and the next morning … I get the call and they are like “We like your take, can you come in to Scott Free?” I walk into a room and there is Ridley Scott and an executive at Fox and I verbally present, here is everything in the script that I like now, here’s some of my thinking on it — what’s the lay of the land? What are the issues that you guys are having? And we have a great 90 minute meeting in which I do a lot of listening. Again, I don’t want to say I went in and WOWed them, when what really happened was I gave a really short presentation and then Ridley talked about the movie he wanted to make. And then, they decided to hire me. I had to go down to Fox and talk to Tom Rothman about what I wanted to do as well.

And then Sir Ridley Scott and I, and Michael Ellenberg, sat in a conference room for four hours a day, three days a week, and sort of went over it, again and again and again until I understood exactly what he wanted to do and I wrote it. It took me two weeks to write it, not a lot of time — the time consuming part was the collaboration because he thinks, and I know this sounds like I’m brown-noising but, Ridley Scott is a true genius and he thinks in visual terms far beyond the comprehension of mortals like us but also understands story and mood and tone.

Ridley Scott, Michael Fassbender, and Noomi Rapace Talk
Quote:
Today is Speak in Broad Strokes About Prometheus Day. For some, it may be a cause for celebration since the project thrived for months on misinformation and double speak. First we believed it to be a strict Alien prequel, then two prequels, then one prequel again. Oh, but it isn’t really an Alien prequel, except that it kinda is in the sense that it’s set in the same universe prior to the events of Alien, as scripter Damon Lindelof emphasized earlier today. Glean from that what you will.

In part two of SIBSAP Day, Ridley Scott and Prometheus stars Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace attended CineEurope tonight to sell European exhibitors on the prospects of the 3D sci-fi project. Production is underway in London, but they obviously didn’t bring any footage or images or anything that would reveal what Prometheus is literally about. But the trio did speak to the themes of the movie.

The first hint of a prequel centered on the question “Who the hell was that space jockey?“ Scott conceded that the desire to explore that mystery inspired him to revisit the Alien universe. He attributed further inspiration to sci-fi author Erich von Däniken, a proponent of the “ancient astronaut” theory that credits civilation on earth to extraterrestrials:

“The (space) journey, metaphorically, is about a challenge to the gods… NASA and the Vatican agree that is almost mathematically impossible that we can be where we are today without there being a little help along the way. That’s what we’re looking at (in the film), at some of Erich von Däniken’s ideas of how did we humans come about.”

That is an intriguing idea. In Greek mythology, Prometheus is a Titan that stole fire from the gods and gave it to the mortals. Scott confirmed at CineEurope the title refers to a space ship sent from Earth by a powerful corporation, possibly for the purpose of terraforming.

THR doesn’t provide a direct quote from Fassbender, instead offering this maddening paraphrase:

“Fassbender did hint his character, David, might be a version of the infamous corporate-designed android that plays a pivotal role in all Alien films.”

I welcome Alien fans more knowledgable than myself to speculate in the comments.

Rapace restricted herself to talk about the production: she described her work as “hard and sweaty” and claimed the 73-year-old Scott “still has more energy than all of us combined.”

I really like that there’s this big, mysterious sci-fi project looming. I don’t mind knowing very little about it. But I hope we can push the pause button on quasi-coverage after SIBSAP Day (just 20 minutes left here on the east coast).

Prometheus is scheduled for release on June 8, 2012.

Please be real!?!?!

Possible Synopsis
Quote:
A synopsis for Ridley Scott’s mysterious sci-fi flick Prometheus may have leaked online. Details on the film have been kept under wraps to the point where there’s still confusion over how much of it is an Alien prequel and how much is its own beast. At this point, the consensus seems to be that it is a prequel to Alien, but it’s outside the mold of the franchise to date. This synopsis sheds some light on how Prometheus could be both an Alien prequel and not an Alien-prequel. Keep in mind that that this could just be elaborate fan fiction from a guy (or gal) with too much free time deciding to take what disparate elements we think we know and build it into a convincing synopsis.

Earth. Year 2058.

Archaeological digs in Africa reveal alien artifacts that humans were genetically engineered by an advanced alien race (space jockeys). These “Alien Gods” also terraformed Earth in order to make it habitable for their human creations. Amongst finds are coordinates to the Alien God’s home-world, to Paradise. Months later the Weyland Corp launch the spaceship PROMETHEUS and [its] crew, into deep space to make first contact. Thanks to faster than light travel a few years later the PROMETHEUS enters the Zeta Riticuli star system. Humans are greeted by their makers, then transported further into space to a scary yet fascinating world. The Alien Gods are proud of their “children”, their first creation to reach such levels of intelligence.

As a reward they share bits of their astonishing bio-based technologies with the humans. But for one crew member of the Prometheus it’s not enough. In a treacherous act he steals the “bio-source code” to Terraforming, a technology at the origin of all Gods’ power, that could make humans equal to the gods. The Alien Gods may be scientists but are also ruthless conquerors, destroyers of worlds who will not accept humans as equals. They unleash on the escaping human crew their favorite bio-weapon, a creature used to “clean up” worlds before colonization. But something goes wrong in the process and humans manage to turn the bio-weapon against their makers. Giving birth to a smarter, nastier, bigger breed of gut eating creatures. Creatures that will be the demise of Paradise. What’s left of the Prometheus crew manages to escape the doomed planet.

On their trail a survivor Alien God in very familiar ship with one ultimate mission.

Bring the wrath of the Gods to Earth.

So we’ve heard the thing about terraforming before as well as the name “Paradise“, the Weyland (of Weyland-Yutani) and space jockeys tie into the Alien mythology and presumably the “bio-weapons” are the xenomorphs or at least proto-xenomorphs. However, there are also some confusing elements:

If the Alien Gods are conquerors, then why terraform Earth, let humans evolve, and then reward them with gifts? Furthermore, wouldn’t the terraforming process already clean up the Earth? And how does a bio-weapon like the xenomorph (again, presuming this is the xenomorph we all know and love) exterminate flying creatures or microorganisms? Finally, if humans from 2058 could control and use the xenomorphs, then why was that process lost to future generations?

Whether this is the actual synopsis, a synopsis of an earlier draft, or just outright false, we’ll know the truth when Prometheus opens in 3D on June 8, 2012. The film stars Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce, and Idris Elba.

It's planned as one film, but I'm sure if it's popular enough they will continue it.

I'd take the plot summary with a grain of salt until we can get it confirmed, not to mention that plot would totally go against the grain of what that one fellow had to say about prequels revealing the twists of movies that follow. If the movie has the Space Jockey zipping off to Earth to deliver the Aliens... WE KNOW IT FAILS!!! Not only does it fail, it fails in the same spectacular way the Terminator franchise continues to fail (And I LOVE Terminator) to deliver an all out humans vs. machines war! This movie, based on THAT plot, would be a big build up to an invasion that we know never happens. I'm just not sure I'm buying that plot summary that seems to have popped up out of nowhere.

Sounds pretty awesome, but how the hell would they do the interaction between the 'space jockeys' and humans? would be very awkward seeing as the space jockey in Alien was about 40 times the size of a human.

They could use Telepathy.
Some of these ideas sound cool. I hope the movie turns out half as good as it sounds.

The premise in that plot summary sounds very cool and I'll be happy if that's where the film is taking the story.

A couple of 'problems' though:

- they discover these alien artifacts in 2058 and launch Prometheus a few months later? We can build interstellar spacecrafts capable of traveling at lightspeed or faster in less than 50 years? Sounds very unlikely to me that Ridley Scott would go for this setup, but perhaps he's forced because Alien takes place in the early 22. century?

- If you take Scott's own Alien in consideration, I don't think they had lightspeed capabilities in that film. They used cryogenics to compensate for the long travels in space. Neither was there any indication that the human race had any prior contact with an intelligent alien civilization. So either, the whole Prometheus mission is in deep secrecy and essentially nobody will survive to tell the tale to keep in line with the storyline of Alien, or.... something else...
