THX is dead, vive IMAX 3D. Yeah, put that badge on receivers, soundbars, TVs, front projectors, Blu-ray players, HDMI cables, amplifiers, preamps, SSPs, ... Speakers? Yes, speakers too; IMAX Sound.

We had THX for best Picture & Sound.
Now is the time for IMAX with best Picture & Sound ... in both 3D and dts:X

Before they put another useless badge a la IMAX Enhanced on front of our receivers, make more movies with 3D cameras and introduce new 3D/4k TVs and 3D/4K front projectors that are 3D glasses-free.

3D is done. Extremely doubtful it is coming back. Not even a sliver of interest in it at CEDIA with any CE company.

I didn't disagree; I've said that the majority of films were shot in 2.35:1/2.40:1
I just added a great doc in IMAX 3D; excellent doc by the way, with great cinematography in 3D...1.78:1 screen aspect ratio, giving that extra full IMAX coverage height.

For large screens, yes, scope aspect ratio because of the heavy percentage of films in that format.
_____

* 3D? Realistically it's on the descent here in North America, today. ...No doubt.
Tomorrow? It's not on the horizon, and James Cameron is into climate change @ this point.
It's still fun to look for 3D in the future. It will be back; it's just a question of when.

For now 4K is starting to get perfected. There is much more advancement to come ...

Follow the money ... what sells, what people want to sell, what people want to buy ... in masses here in North America. Each country is different; 3D is big in China, IMAX is big in America. Putting an IMAX enhanced badge on the front of a receiver, sells, no matter what people know and don't know about it. This is America, in general.

Some receivers are sporting that badge already, I think, or it's coming soon, like the flagship Denon receiver, the 8500 and the top pre/pro from Marantz. It's a leading edge company; if it catches on I'm sure other manufacturers are going to be anxious in following the new badge/trend...the money. If it's free, no additional cost, then it's all good fun. We need entertainment in whichever flavor, new features, new new new ways to keep up.

No, it will come back, or at least an attempt. Avatar 2 is coming out in 2 years. The movie will make a billion dollars. TV makers will need a new gimmick to sell. And just like that, 3D is back.

Im not so sure about that. They rushed back in 09/10 with massive crosstalk in most active sets and half resolution with all passive until the very end when they finally got it right with full resolution with a few 4K sets but then was too late, 3D was long gone. Glasses free will be doomed from the start.

Back on topic, I’m very interested in this new format, I’m covered on the audio portion I just hoped Sony would add it to the Z9D too.

My next pre/pro is not going to be one without the IMAX Enhanced sticker on the front face.
And when Avatar 2 comes that badge might read IMAX 3D Enhanced.

About that.

So basically, what Dolby is doing with Dolby Vision/Atmos. Basically the way I see it, IMAX wanted in on the game, with THX (essentially) a dead fish in the water.
Dolby, against all pricing odds, has been doing bang-up marketing (Relative), and now DTS has said screw it, and teamed with IMAX to make a competitor to Dolby Vision/Atmos.
While at the same time IMAX is also competing with HDR10/10+, I'm pretty sure HLG is going to be the HDR format for Broadcast content, unless the TV companies decide to go with HDR10 seeing 10+ is a thing.

This is basically it, from the looks of it. Also, interesting to note two things they’ve updated on their site:

1. Sports and high-budget television are two avenues of content they’re planning on providing.

2. IE content will include guidance for getting reference volume levels as intended by the filmmakers for theatrical release.

I think if the technology can be realized to near perfection, glasses free 3D would be the next logical step whenever 8K sets become the standard. Besides what else would manufacturers want to impose on us by then? They would need something new to sell to the masses, and 3D without glasses sounds like a good selling point to me. Especially since there were so many people complaining about having to wear glasses.

I haven't really been following this Imax Enhanced stuff, but from what I did read, I'm not interested in this in the slightest. Noise reduction and filling the entire screen just for the sake of it? Why? No, thanks.

I'd rather have something useful and worthwhile. Which is why I think stuff like this (and HFR for that matter) should be kicked to the curb. Bring on glasses free 3D! Hell, even "regular" (passive) 3D being brought back for current 4K TVs would be something I'd be most grateful for. But alas...

We should expect some IMAX Enhanced news next week:

A new webinar from Residential Systems
IMAX Enhanced Investigated

IMAX Enhanced garnered plenty of buzz when it was announced at the recent CEDIA Expo, but it left integrators and retailers wanting more — more details, that is.

Residential Systems has put its top investigator, John Sciacca, on the case, and in this exclusive webinar John will hold a discussion with professionals in the know from DTS, Sony, and Sound United to find out exactly how IMAX will take its legendary theater quality into the home.

Register today and learn answers to questions such as:
  • What exactly is IMAX Enhanced?
  • What benefits will a user expect from IMAX Enhanced?
  • How will IMAX Enhanced be delivered?
  • When is content expected to be available?
  • What kind of price premium should one expect on IMAX Enhanced content?
  • What if I have an IMAX Enhanced certified display but not AV receiver or vice versa?
  • What will be the differences between an IMAX Enhanced film and a regular release?
  • How does IMAX Enhanced differ from THX certification? And much more.

Join us on December 4 at 2:00 PM EDT and get the lowdown on this new technology before your clients ask for it.

Most interesting thing they’ve said so far is they’ve been putting the theatrical IMAX mixes on some or most of the discs they’ve worked on so far without any remixing. That’s promising.
