It was rushed and out early.
Whacking the Atmos on it is lazy town.

Sounds like they're getting ready to roll out catalog titles - on streaming. They specifically mention streaming platforms.

Meanwhile on DISC the crown jewel - Lawrence of Arabia - is Dolby Vision & Atmos. No downgrades for that title!

I got my first IMAX title today (Bad Boys for Life)

My projector is IMAX enhanced certified.

I'm going to pretend that means something and further try to find a set of settings that I think would put the PJ into IMAX enhanced mode.

I kind of think of all my UHD titles as enhanced because they are all clearly a cut above anything streaming. I guess that's the UltraHD premium certification.

(I did email Sony for any information they have as my PJ is certified.)

You could always take the sticker from the cover and stick it on the screen?

Screen Enhancement?

For AVRs IMAX Enhanced was a last gasp to offer something before HDMI 2.1 interfaces finally come. We are almost at the point you don't want to buy a AVR that can't at least pass 8K. Yes vendors are still selling 2018 models pretty much.

Really ... at least 8K would probably not be on my radar if I replacing my AVR.

My AVR isn't certified for IMAX Enhanced as far as I know but has the DTS:X mode which is used.

I went through the settings on the PJ and set everything to whatever optimized the dynamic range. Also emailed Sony for info about the projector's IMAX Enhanced settings and they told me to set the input to "enhanced" and that's all the said ... which is something I did long ago.

I thought I read something about IMAX Enhanced using the full frame and not having black bars and Bad Boys for Life is a scope ratio movie. I zoom to fit my scope screen so I don't have Black Bars but ... I thought that full frame was part of the IMAX Enhanced format.

see this hometheaterreview article. Look at "First Question: Is now the right time to buy a receiver?"

I think IMHO that if you had a choice of it being incorporated and the AVR being your pillar of your AV setup, you would want it even if you don't have a 8K TV.

It would be the same for supporting IMAX Enhanced, you still want it even if you don't use it.

Somehow I don't think so.

My AVR isn't the pillar of my setup - That would be the projector maybe followed by the room and speakers themselves. My AVR is important but it's one part of a larger system.

I really don't believe in 8k any time soon. However, I'm not against upgrades in general so if 8K TVs is a new standard soon that's fine, whatever.

I buy a receiver when they have something new I want like 4K passthrough in the last example. The article may have good advice but general good advice wouldn't apply to my specific needs.

Not every movie is embiggened to fit the screen, not even with IMAX theatrical presentations.

I'm glad. I enjoy the Scope ratio. I'm glad I have a 2.40:1 screen even if it means sometimes I have to zoom into 16:9.

I think for action sequences IMAX totally works at it's best, especially with CBMs due to characters that have powers which who are able manipulate their surroundings and have more vertical physicality. For simple dialogue stuff (shot reverse shots) it doesn't have an effect but the strongest argument for opened up action sequences. I'm hoping there's a chance for Endgame. The final battle in IMAX was a treat. And I wouldn't mind even a alternating AR like Nolan's films on Home Video.
