To be fair, due to the pandemic there hasn't been any new Sony theatrical releases to release to home video - and catalog releases are still OG audio & Atmos.

Does it explain it with catalog titles though? If a lot of it was trying to get DTS back in the game. Eg, District 9 getting upgraded from DTS-HD MA 5.1 to DTS-IMAX, as opposed to DTS to Dolby. DTS in terms of UHD is nearly non existent. And obviously Sony isn't that interested either. I think the last DTS was 47 Ronin, and that was just DTS-X. And from Universal.

Well that's because Dolby Atmos is both a better format and easier to mix/encode.

"Easier" is key because while TrueHD was more efficient and took much less DSP horsepower to decode it had several additional steps to encode on Blu-ray in the beginning - so the easier to encode DTS-MA won out.

It is bizarre the whole generational audio flip flopping. Dvd was primarily Dolby, Blu Ray primarily DTS, and uhd primarily Dolby.

More like everything primarily Dolby (this includes television, streaming, games, etc). Standard Blu-ray was an outlier.

What do you mean? Maybe on the lossy side, but over 95% of the Blu Rays in my collection are DTS-HD MA. I've so few that are TrueHD - other than rarer later titles that got Atmos.

Hence the "standard Blu-ray was an outlier".

I would love to see an IMAX Inhanced Riddick UHD. I actually prefer its aspect shifts as it helped with the story.

I watched Spider-Man: FFH last night on FandangoNow Imax Enhanced and it was great. First time I saw FFH was while in Guam for work and on a small screen with a huge coke stain square in the middle where someone had chucked their large beverage. The day after returning home I hit up the local IMAX right away. This took me right back to that experience. I love shifting aspect ratios, it looked dynamite. Are there any plans to release these versions on disc?

Looking at the THE 4K ULTRA HD RELEASE LIST (US/UK/DE) from Digitalbits shows nothing. So yeah. Can we blame Sony as they have some marketing nitwits pushing streaming with their Bravia TVs over releasing 4K media from Sony Pictures.

May 4 2020 - According to an announcement today by Xperi, its own IMAX Enhanced and DTS brands are joining forces with Sony Pictures Entertainment to release ‘hundreds’ of new IMAX Enhanced titles over the next two years.
So much for that promise.

Big deal, does Sony offer that to anyone else but new better model Bravia TV buyers. If not its DOA in the near future.

The last 30 minutes of that movie is absolutely made for the IMAX ratio. Such a better experience IMO. Hope we get more content

Looks like FandangoNow kicks in HDR only on specific TV models. I was unable to get HDR via Apple TV on my Panasonic GZ OLED which supports all HDR formats (minus this IMAX enhanced badge).

So I kissed goodbye to FN and sticking to iTunes/MA.
