Scott Derrickson, director of Doctor Strange, is not a fan of his film being released with the "IMAX" scenes on home video, as he never made those scenes with the intention to be seen on anything but IMAX screens.

https://twitter.com/scottderrickson/...10458863689732

Quote:
Oh wait I see - Kevin’s right image is just regular widescreen, and left is imax. But I don’t see why they are doing that — they a broadcasting in a format we filmmakers never intended to have broadcast.
https://twitter.com/scottderrickson/...39054864994307

Quote:
Okay so it’s 2.40 then opens to 1.90?

Does it feel odd to see that shift on a television? It’s barely noticeable in IMAX
https://twitter.com/scottderrickson/...40604236697601

Quote:
Apparently @disneyplus has elected to stream at least some Marvel movies (including Doctor Strange) in the 1.9 IMAX aspect ratio instead of 2:39.

I can only speak for myself, but I never intended that aspect ratio to be used for home viewing.
https://twitter.com/scottderrickson/...42065905504258

Quote:
I selected specific scenes for 1.9 in IMAX and framed those scenes for BOTH 1.9 and 2.39 — that is what @disneyplus is using, so it toggles aspect ratios during the film. But I never imagined that the 1.9 IMAX version for steaming.
https://twitter.com/scottderrickson/...43836291887111

Quote:
This is important — apparently @disneyplus provides the 1.9 as an option, and I’ve also been told that option exists on the Blue-ray.

This certainly makes this less problematic, but I still maintain that I never intended anyone to see the 1.9 version on tv.
https://twitter.com/scottderrickson/...89865804529674

Quote:
IMAX envelopes you, puts you inside the frame wherever you sit. Maximum visceral experience.

Theatrical, sit close and you’re “inside the frame,” or back enough to appreciate the framed composition.

At home you are inevitably observing the frame. I didn’t intend that with IMAX.
So Disney did not even notify the directors about what they are doing with their films? Oof.

Why would they? They are production line movies, part of why he left MoM.
Marvel always have the final say with these
It was awesome in IMAX tho, not watched the stream.

Interesting that some IMAX shots in other movies are cropped & embiggened, they don’t just have the mattes opened up, and that previous HDTV/streaming open matte 1.78 versions can still show fractionally more info than these do.

I doubt that many directors have Blu-ray at home, never mind 3D. But it’s cool that he’s getting bent out of shape about it, as it really does prove that some directors don’t actually want you to view it like this at home. What’s funny is that he says the AR shift is “barely noticeable” for IMAX projektion and I said the same thing about the 3D disc a few days ago: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...e#post19544907

I think some would prefer home video not to exist at all.

I like widescreen films but right before we went into lockdowns in March 2020, I bought myself a 75 inch Samsung 4K. I also have had surround sound for over 10 years. Shang-Chi felt pretty damn immersive in 1:90:1, and I compared a few shots. Like, when they arrive at the village you see more of the mountains in the background and stuff. I like the expanded ratios for home release, especially with a large TV.

I also bootlegged Thor Ragnarok's IMAX version earlier this summer (ripped from the 3D disc) because I own a projector and play movies on a screen hooked up on the side of my house. My friends and the neighbors love it. So I actually did get to see it projected at somewhere between 140 and 150 inches and the aspect ratio shifts were pretty dramatic. People noticed and like it.

Also, did have a 3DTV and yes, Guardians and Doctor Strange had shifting aspect ratios in 3D. Odd that Derrickson didn't seem to know that

Infinity War does look very impressive. Same scenes look three dimensional. Even my 9 year son mentioned why does this look different and better this time around.

Man, I really wish Disney would release these on disc. I am sure these will sell really well.

Scott Derrickson didn't intend for Doctor Strange to be viewed with IMAX at home, but apparently he says he's not objecting to it either.

James Gunn on the "IMAX" versions of his films: People watching in scope get slightly less than he intended since he planned every single shot and which ones to go big from the start, but granted, the expanded scenes were created for 3D in the first place, and not 2D.

https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status...64843908878336

Quote:
Most films that switch aspect ratios, like in both Guardians films, don't plan out the switches ahead of time. So they shoot 2.35ish & then cut off the sides to 1.90ish. I just choose what sequences are in what aspect ratio first & shoot accordingly. It's not more expensive.
https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status...66801126400000

Quote:
For people watching it switch, nothing ever gets cut off because I've already framed every part of the film for a that aspect ratio. But if you watch the whole movie in 2:35 you'll get slightly less of what I intended in some scenes.
https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status...67042256949257

Quote:
That said, if you watch the original version, you'll see I sometimes have part of an image protrude out of the 2:35 frame. This worked best when the film was shown in 3D. Not sure if the protrusions exist in the Disney plus IMAX versions now being shown. Let me know!

Quote:
Did you have any input about the new aspect ratio offering for your Guardians films?

Every aspect ratio is always my choice.
https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status...68252649148416

Quote:
As the first one to shoot a Marvel film in switching aspect ratios, there is absolutely nothing random about the two Guardians' movies & where the switches happen. We always widen out on big sections or big moments for emotional or visceral effect.
https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status...68801809379338

Quote:
All that said, the Guardians movies switching aspect ratios were originally designed for 3D, not 2D as they're presently being shown. It's a more impactful device in 3D.
edit: And as he points out he went full-length IMAX instead of only for select shots with DC's The Suicide Squad.

https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status...67466779136013

Quote:
The Suicide Squad was shot 100% in IMAX with IMAX approved cameras.

Well he moonwalked his way out of that. Or Mickey asked him to stop taking a dump on one of the Disney+ Day additions.

Infinity War looked gorgeous on my ZD9.

HDR and immersion from the scenes taking place in Titan and Wakanda were way above my OLED. Wow just wow. I doubt if I will ever go back the disc after being totally spoiled by this immersive aspect ratio which worked really with Infinity War.

Which really makes you wonder... why did Disney have to make a deal with IMAX in order to release their movies on home video with the expanded aspect ratio?

WB has been doing this for years, going back to 2008 with The Dark Knight. Most recently, The Suicide Squad this past summer. They didn't have to make a special deal with IMAX (and rightfully so, IMAX can't own an aspect ratio).

I dunno. All they did was release the two versions that I made and approved theatrically, so I don’t feel slighted about it. And now that I’ve seen it and like it, it doesn’t really matter.

Yep, I'm convinced Disney paid him to tweet that. You don't get to send out a lot of tweets about artistic integrity and what the true ratio is and end up saying that.

I suspect the deal wasn't to "allow" Disney to use the expanded ratio (as Gunn and Derrickson pointed out, the 3D Blu-rays already had IMAX scenes), but to use the IMAX branding as a promotional thing. Disney probably just didn't think having the expanded ratio was important until they realized it could be a selling point for Disney+.

Yeah, when you put it that way it makes a lot more sense! Especially if it's going to be a Disney+ exclusive, and the "IMAX Enhanced" versions won't be available on other digital platforms or even Blu-ray.
