The only reason I like IMAX enhanced branding that it has somehow made MCU films available in variable aspect ratio in D+. Otherwise, this and HDR10+ are almost dead are pointless to me.

I really hope Disney will release these on physical at some point in time.

All the Spider Mans are in IMAX on Bravia Core. But neither the new Resident Evil nor Ghostbusters have been given the ‘Max love on the Core yet. So who knows.

If you mean the new Ghostbusters there was no embiggened IMAX version anyway. Ditto with the new Resi.

I dunno. Other Resi’s are in the Max. Then again, I may be misremembering. It’s Friday.

Are they embiggened too? First one was shot 1.85 anyway. If they're not then the point of "IMAX Enhanced" turns into vapourware as there's no reason for it to exist if there's no embiggened image and no DTS rendition of the theatrical audio mix.

I don’t recall and I’m not by the tv. I could be mixing things up as I don’t follow as close as you guys.

From a business stance, Bravia Core doesn't make a lot of sense

Bravia Core: Great concept but poor execution. Platform not stable. Not sure if Sony is investing in this service. They did few fixes. I tried to connect an hour ago and it didn't work. I am unsure about the longevity of it.

Most streaming platforms have settled with 16 Mbps AVBR and 768 Kbps for Atmos. Most shot digitally look excellent and HDR is comfortably masking compression artifacts (perfect red herring). One day we might see some of the platforms switching to AV1 on a broader scale which means same picture quality at 20-30% lower bit rates. Less bandwidth hogging.

Sony 2021+ TVs supports AV1 for streaming.

Not sure HDR masks artefacts, if anything it’s more ruthless at exposing whatever junk shouldn’t be in a signal. IMO it’s 10-bit encoding plus 99.9% of everything being shot digital as you say that makes the biggest differences, it boggles my mind that I can have a 2hr movie in 4K HDR encoded by a dude in his bedroom into a file that would fit onto a single layer DVD and it looks virtually flawless, while the professional authoring houses can be given 20 times as much space and still **** it up.

True, but multiple IMAX Enhanced titles on the service aren't either. Just like Charlie's Angels and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood and Zombieland 2: Double Tap weren't on disc. Not only that, but what I've been reading is that they're in lossy DTS 5.1 on CORE! Seems IE is just a cluster**** on every level.

Venom 1 wasn’t expanded either for the IE stream, but that seems to be the latest directive for IE content, that only embiggened stuff counts?

On D+ yes, but Sony no. Venom was anamorphic all the way through.

I think with Sony being "born again" with Dolby Vision on almost every release now & re-releasing their catalog jewels with it, IMAX Enhanced on disc is dunzo. Shout hasn't released any new IMAX discs in quite a while - it'll be 4 years this December.

IMAX Enhanced went from a disc format to a Disney+ streaming format. The former flopped while the later has proved to be very successful.

Except they use Dolby Vision + Atmos on Disney+

So as far as being actually "IMAX Enhanced" (which requires DTS:X)...

As far as they are concerned, IMAX Enhanced is all about the aspect ratio difference from the "regular" presentation.

That's all that's required. As I mentioned - what was to be the specs of a disc format changed: No DTS:X. No HDR10+

It was hardly a 'format' to begin with, seeing as it was encoded to disc using no proprietary technologies, using HDR10/+ for video and DTS:X for audio. The latter encased a proprietary sound mix and the former a proprietary video treatment, true, but these required no particularly specialised hardware to play.

IMAX Enhanced has since become synonymous with what it should've been all along: exclusive aspect ratio versions of movies (which, ironically enough, were never delivered on any official "IMAX Enhanced" UHD discs and in all likelihood are what killed IE adoption on disc). That's all that people really want out of the brand - FILL MAH SCREEN, DAMMIT - and D+ is giving it to them.

HDR10+ was never part of the spec. Just HDR10.

IMAX Enhanced triggers a DTS:X IMAX mode on compatible receivers and an IMAX mode on compatible displays, which is an automatic HDR setting. Some projectors also advertised it. All of the materials put out by IMAX specified it was a partnership between them and Xperi.

The Disney+ streams do none of that.

It's a moot point isn't it? Because prior to Disney+ using IMAX Enhanced - the format was pretty much nothing more than a "Paper Tiger." All specs and promises . . . delivering practically nothing.
