That is correct. Even the current largest consumer TVs can NOT give you immersion like in the IMAX theatres. Well they can, but you literally have to sit about 6ft away from a 100” TV.

Dunno - seems to me these days, for both Director's *and* home viewers, letterboxed 2.35 says "cinematic" or "epic". Once TVs went 1.78 anamorphic widescreen for feature films made a HUGE comeback to where it's now standard on high budget "event" TV series like The Offer or the new Star Trek shows. Going IMAX Enhanced almost seems to give in to the Pan & Scan crowd where it literally is going open-matte for either the entire feature or select sequences. Movies like Dune are the exception, not the rule in this case where they add sides to the frame in 2.35 rather than opening it up.

Not really, since the filmmakers themselves are often the impetus for a new soundmix. Most filmmakers aren't in the fullscreen camp.

The last IMAX Enhanced physical release so far is EVANGELION:3.333 YOU CAN (NOT) REDO..
However, EVANGELION:3.0+1.11 THRICE UPON A TIME will most likely be IMAX Enhanced as well to match 3.333.

Lets see if it will be available for Android OS Tvs that are certified IMAX Enhanced, to this day D+ still don't offer Atmos for those.

IMAX® ENHANCED TO EXPAND OFFERING ON DISNEY+ WITH IMAX SIGNATURE SOUND BY DTS FOR THE HOME IN 2023
JAN 4, 2023
Immersive in-home experience to deliver high-fidelity audio on fan-favorite film titles for Disney+ subscribers on IMAX Enhanced certified devices worldwide

NEW YORK, N.Y. and LOS ANGELES, CALIF. (January 4, 2023) – Disney Streaming, IMAX Corporation (NYSE:IMAX), and DTS, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Xperi Inc. (NYSE: XPER), announced today that Disney+ subscribers using select devices will have a new way to experience select films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and more with an expansion of IMAX Enhanced technology on Disney+ coming in 2023.

In addition to IMAX’s exclusive expanded aspect ratio, which launched on Disney+ in November 2021, IMAX signature sound by DTS will enable an elevated end-to-end experience specially calibrated to provide fans at home with IMAX-quality picture and sound. Select best-in-class device manufacturers will support IMAX signature sound by DTS at launch, including IMAX Enhanced certified TVs from manufacturers like Sony and Hisense. Additionally, owners of certified AV receivers from manufacturers like Denon, Marantz, and JBL will also be able to enjoy the experience at launch. IMAX’s expanded aspect ratio, which delivers 1:90:1 and offers up to 26% more picture for select sequences, is currently available for supported titles across all Disney+ supported devices at no additional cost or equipment.

“We’re excited to roll out the next evolution of IMAX Enhanced technology on Disney+ in the coming year,” said Jerrell Jimerson, Executive Vice President of Product, Disney Streaming. “This unique collaboration extends our long-standing relationship between Disney and IMAX and we look forward to delivering this new immersive audio experience alongside premium playback quality for current and future titles to our audiences around the world.”

“We’re thrilled to bring audiences an even greater cinematic experience in the home and beyond as we roll out the next phase of IMAX Enhanced on Disney+,” said Vikram Arumilli, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Streaming and Consumer Technology, IMAX Corporation. “We can’t wait for fans to experience more of our cutting-edge, unparalleled sight and sound advancements across the entire IMAX Enhanced collection on Disney+, with more titles soon to come.”

“Fan response to the launch of IMAX Enhanced titles on Disney+ has been overwhelmingly positive, giving viewers what they have been asking for – stunning images at home as intended by the incredible teams behind some of the world’s most popular films,” said Bill Neighbors, Chief Content Officer at Xperi. “Now, fans will be able to get the full experience of IMAX Enhanced with the addition of IMAX Enhanced signature sound by DTS, exclusively for those titles.”

IMAX is the world’s most immersive canvas for filmmakers to bring their visions to audiences around the globe. With IMAX’s exclusive expanded aspect ratio, filmmakers can create a more immersive experience in theaters and now in the home, allowing audiences to see more of the action. Marvel fans have long called for more of the IMAX experience at home, and now with certain IMAX Enhanced features on Disney+, subscribers get what they have been waiting for - additional image at home as intended by the incredible teams behind some of the world’s most popular films.

With IMAX Enhanced, IMAX and technology partner DTS enable content that can be experienced in-home and beyond with the highest fidelity, ensuring that filmmakers’ creative intent is fully optimized for an IMAX-quality presentation. Disney+ is the first major streaming service to elevate the at-home viewing experience with IMAX Enhanced, giving its subscribers new ways to re-experience the Marvel Cinematic Universe and beyond.

Today’s announcement is the latest evolution in the storied relationship between IMAX and Marvel Studios, with audiences first entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe in IMAX in 2010. Since then, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become the highest grossing franchise in IMAX history. Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame were the first films shot entirely with IMAX digital cameras, and all titles available in IMAX Enhanced on Disney+ feature select sequences in IMAX’s expanded aspect ratio.

So I guess they developed a new audio format to deliver DTS over streaming? Like how Dolby has Dolby Digital Plus to deliver Atmos over streaming?

Disney already has Atmos for all their "IMAX Enhanced" movies, so I'd assume you'll still get that if you don't have an "IMAX Enhanced" device for this new audio format.

DTS has always had a lossy version of their Coherent Acoustics audio codec, which was used on DVD and unfortunately on a couple Universal 4k Blu-ray's as the main track.

They have a 768 kilobits/sec variant which showed up on DVD when they halved their bitrate and that is probably what the streaming app will use. It also always had a core+extension system in place, like Dolby's audio codecs, that could also be used for extra channels and/or metadata (remember, DTS: X does not have 3D objects any longer, just fixed speaker channels). Of course, this could be a different format, but then no legacy processors would be able to decode it and they would again be behind the 8 ball. I'm thinking that DTS is using what is already installed in almost all DTS consumer decoders. If you have a DTS: X decoder, then it would be able to read the extra channels in the extension packet.

Interesting! I have a 2018 Denon receiver that can decode DTS:X. So it looks like even if equipment doesn't have the official "IMAX Enhanced" logo, it still may be compatible?

That would make sense, since "IMAX Enhanced" is mostly just a marketing term and not an actual technical format like Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos.

Actually if you read this from a Denon Receiver manual, it seems like DTS IMAX Enhanced is a modified "codec" compared to DTS:X

Quote:
IMAX Enhanced

This IMAX Enhanced product have met stringent performance standards established by IMAX and DTS in order to create a consistent and higher bar for sound performance. DTS has developed a special method for reproducing an IMAX signature sound experience in the consumer’s home. This method combines a unique conversion process for IMAX theatrical audio mixes utilizing an enhanced DTS codec technology. The IMAX theatrical audio format with point source surround speakers closely matches the speaker configuration most consumers have in their homes today. Coupled with DTS audio technology, IMAX Enhanced audio products will ensure the best and most accurate audio reproduction over 5.1 or more speaker channels
So that's why LG TVs can bitstream it, but you still need an IMAX enhanced compatible soundbar or AV receiver

The only thing different is that the so-called IMAX Enhanced DTS: X decoders can read the Center Height speaker channel as that is exclusive to IMAX 12-Channel tracks. So, you would get a 7.1.5 mix... if you have an IMAX Enhanced receiver or pre-amp that has greater than 7.1.4 processing and channel output capabilities.

Otherwise, these tracks decode as standard DTS: X 7.1.4 mixes.

On Bravia Core, it is called IMAX Enhanced DTS. To the best of my knowledge, it has a special metadata that lights up IMAX Enhanced on AVRs but I think the bit rate is 768 Kbps as per the HUD which is the same as lossy Atmos.

Although the Sony TVs passes through IMAX Enhanced DTS via eARC, not all AVRs and soundbars are able to decode it correctly.

IMAX Enhanced DTS from Bravia Core is not decoded properly by my Samsung Q950 btw.

I would expect some soundbars to have issues because much of the time they have stripped down decoders compared to a receiver or pre-amp. Just another reason to only get a soundbar for non critical viewing and a full sound system for the main home theater.
